MARCH MADNESS 2024 - Day 28
🕑 Added 2024-03-28 16:00:14 +0000 UTCGotta say, I'm a bit surprised by Highlander's strength in this year's tournament! But will Connor MacLeod be able to defeat Tabletop Games in the next round? HMMM.
Up today - a much-anticipated matchup.
HAPPY MADISON ORIGINS vs PULP HEROES!
You can practically hear these images!
With HAPPY MADISON ORIGINS, we'd cover the six Sandler vehicles that led to the creation of his Happy Madison production shingle with LITTLE NICKY:
BILLY MADISON
HAPPY GILMORE
THE WEDDING SINGER
THE WATERBOY
BIG DADDY
LITTLE NICKY
With PULP HEROES, we'd cover five films (mostly) from the 90s, when people thought this genre was gonna be a thing:
Dick Tracy
The Shadow
The Phantom
The Rocketeer
The Spirit
Which franchise will move on to face Andrew Lloyd Webber in the next round??
Comments
Nolan B
We had the chance to have a Little Nicky episode and THIS is what you do to me? 💔
Nolan B
You people disgust me.
Ancient alien
I forgot to pay for membership and couldn’t vote LMAO 😭😭😭🍅🍅
Howard Green
All respect to Highlander, the first is a classic, and a The Quickening episode is a must, but you can defiantly stop there. Unless you need 2-3 hours to discuss Mario Van Peebles (in the Highlander franchise anyway.) 4 you could justify if you are encompassing the transition to television and the various series, which have their own following I suppose.
Rebecca C
I remember seeing The Spirit in theaters and it was a tough watch. Disappointed Happy Madison didn’t knock this one out
William Volny
I don’t think anyone should be surprised by Highlander. It’s been a years in waiting Ben’s Choice.
Chris Dobson
People that think somehow the Rocketeer is the only interesting pulp hero film in that batch are out of their minds, The Phantom Slams Evil, features crystal skulls, and Treat Williams murders a man with a booby-trapped microscope!
Michael Conway
I think Dick Tracy and The Rocketeer would be great episodes. The Shadow might have some interesting BTS details I guess.
Joshua Athridge
Pulp Heroes, all the way!
Jason H
I love The Rocketeer, but the others are so bad and not in a "I want to watch them for laughs" way.
Alice
y'all are transphobic if you don't pick happy madison
disk-kun, the mascot for the famicom disk system
which three lol every one of the pulp movies is bizarre in a very different way except MAYBE the shadow and the phantom, and those movies are still weird they're just similarly weird
Janine Liberty
Clearly I don't know anything about anything, I thought Pulp Heroes would be out in the first round and Happy Madison could only potentially be defeated by Tabletop Games. This is bananas.
CT
He’s an American Hero!!
CT
I am so thrilled at the totally gonzo result of this poll! Thank god the majority of Blankies have the correct opinion this one time!
Rad Rodge
Yeah I think that just created a noncompetitive bracket
Anthony Regina
I’d say those are all fun and/or wild movies that will fun to be sit through with commentary!
Anthony Regina
I’m taking these pulps as far as I can
Laura Bee
Harold would never beat up his landlord!
Eric
dick
Eric
diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
Adam Buckeridge
Come on happy!
Austin McDougle
On a certain level isn’t that what the pod’s about? If i was just interested in a movie I’d read about it, the friends’ personalities is what makes the show tho. Like, I wasn’t interested in Nomads at all but I loved the episode.
Jon Tiberious
Nobody is funny
Bill
I'm really happy that the Patreon users are also insane like me. The general march madness bracket winners are turning out to be way too serious.
PoorFrisco
Basically a guarantee once Twin Peaks was included.
Rad Rodge
Not that I don’t like Patrick Fischler but I do like suspenseful busted brackets more
Rad Rodge
My fear with the main feed bracket since day one has been “wouldn’t Lynch just win against any possible opponent on a main feed bracket, given the demographics of the electorate,” and it still is unfortunately feeling that way to me
Rad Rodge
Yeah that’s the thing, this has all been vanity because an index card with Jarnathan on it would’ve won hahaha
Douglas Wykstra
This was maybe the first hard decision I've had to make for this bracket.
Rad Rodge
I can sense Griffin’s disgust with our evaluation here but I kiiiiiiiinda agree about Stanton, I think John Carter is one of the most necessary movies for the show cover eventually but I’m not set on a Stanton series
Rad Rodge
Yeah this is a really blank check series with a surprising amount of variety
Blake Anderson
There are a lot of interesting careers within the happy Madison camp other than Adam Sandler. He always gets interesting ensembles because he’s (seemingly at least) such a genuine mench
tracy
blank check dick tracy is my roman empire
Michael Conway
Yikes. Pulp Heroes is gonna have 3 completely skippable episodes. Even the lame Sandler ones are going to have something interesting to talk about.
Chuck Emmett
GIMME NOTHING BUT PULP
Chris Radicone
I feel like Table Top Games can do it with Clue in the mix.
Josh Harvey
Pacino as Big Boy Caprice is worth the price admission alone.
Josh Harvey
Pre CGI Under appreciated Lovers of kitch People!
Flappy McGillicuddy-Jones III
Anything can happen
sheabobay
THIS IS THRILLING! edge of my dang seat!!!
Jestin
If you think a Rocketeer episode is worth sitting through 2 months of the Shadow, the phantom, the spirit, and dick tracy then I don't know what to say
Jestin
Oh yeah HT and Mixed Nuts are definitely classics. Let's step aside and let them cover the movies with real cultural legacies like *checks notes* "the phantom" and "dick tracy"?
Taman Eggers
PULP PARTY!!
Susan Hoffa
It’s all about Dick Tracy
Devin
They've done way more Sandler (HT1, 2 and 3, plus Spanglish and Mixed Nuts), than they have Beatty. Let's put Sandler to bed for a bit.
Manton
Waaaay more Shadowheads than expected
Carolyn
I would like to put it out there, that Little Nikky is to be added to the pulp hero list in the unlikely event Happy Madison doesn't pull through
Max Newfield
And it was enough!
Tyler Duggan
I told y’all, pulp heroes is gonna take it. People here and on Reddit were makin fun of me, but I knew… I knew…
Avri Rosen-Zvi
The Rocketeer rules and the Shadow deserves more love. It's really stylish and fun
Avri Rosen-Zvi
Pulp heroes all the way, baybeeee!
PG
Get Flash Gordon in there. Let's see Sky Captain too.
Kerry Benton
Man, this one is pretty hard...both of these sets are really appealing. I might have to flip a coin!
CT13
Dick Tracy wins this
Adam Grzegorczyk
Love comedies on main feed, not ideal for commentaries.
Patrick McEvoy
Zing!
Philip M Bernstein
They've only covered one Beatty-related movie though, right?
Alison R.B.
If pulp wins over Sandler then I can only assume that this is karma for ALW winning that vote but seriously there are enough podcasts about comic book characters please leave this topic to The Ringer shout out Van Lathan and Mallory Rubin and Joanna Robinson🫶🏼
Blake Anderson
I feel like they’ve covered Beaty enough. I’m always hesitant on these weird fascination of griffin series. They are weird and his fascination is justified but they aren’t movies I’m interested in
PoorFrisco
I buy that. In my head the main audience and the Patreon audience are the same, but that obviously isn’t true. I’m hopeful for main feed busted bracket some year, but this year makes that seem like a long shot. I’m even bummed about the next bracket update episode since it’ll be a lot of, “well, the favorite won this matchup too.”
Chris Bench
This was precisely my reaction.
Alison R.B.
Seriously I agree don’t we have enough podcasts about superheroes leave this crap to the Midnight Boys over at The Ringer shout out to Van Lathan 🫶🏼
Robert Young
I hated the spirit when I first saw it, but since the homogenization of the genre I kind of appreciate it. At least it was trying something.
SJCMX
thank god. i was so scared to hit that button
Blake Anderson
Austin powers series ruled. Let’s watch Sandler crack the boys up
Blake Anderson
Guys no offense but who cares about pulp heroes? We did it with raimi already. They’re weird but bad? Not enough for me.
FirstPet BirthStreet
Rocketeer fuckin rips
Johnny Pomatto
I've been saving a SHADOW/PHANTOM double feature for a special night, and I would love a gentle nudge towards fully excusing myself to do it. Love all of the PULP HERO films, except for THE SPIRIT, but who knows, maybe I'll learn to love it!
Geraint Thomas
The people demand Warren Beatty's Dick
Billnetherlands
I've only seen the Rocketeer. Pumped for PULP.
Ian Green
I’m not sure where you stand PoorFrisco, but I’m wondering whether the chalk-y nature of the Main Feed Bracket vs. the more chaotic Patreon bracket reflects a more “I only watch films” voting base for main feed whereas the Patreon has a higher % of sportos who understand the beauty of a busted bracket.
Matthew Chmiel
Both have their highs, mids, and lows. This is a tough one. Either way, I hope who makes it forward has enough juice to wipe ALW off the face of the earth.
Aidan
Add John Carter to Pulp Heroes now that Stanton is done
John Dog
Ah now, be fair! He *has* made one - the *same* one, about 30 times or so! Honk honk!
Manish Agarwal
I voted Pulp Heroes because I've never seen The Shadow and note with interest that (a) it's directed by Aussie stylist Russell 'Highlander' Mulcahy and (b) our Checkmates commentary might coincide with Alec Baldwin's upcoming trial... 🦹🏻♂️🚨
Chris Radicone
BAM! POW! ZAPP! KA-BLAMMO! Take that you Nazi scum! Gimme a dame and some quippy dialog and you got the juice! Extra Pulp...
David freeman
Please I cannot handle that much Adam Sandler for 3-4 months. For variety, vote pulp heroes!
Nathan Bagwell
Oh no what do I do!?
Matt
Woooooah
Jonathan Gage
We need Happy Madison origins guys
Zwoozy
PULP PULP PULP PULP
PoorFrisco
I love Spike Lee but it’s going to be incredibly disappointing and boring if all 1 seeds are in the final four.
Dan Licata
Happy Madison Origins is the obvious choice
Patrick McEvoy
I don’t have anything against comedies. Maybe someday Sandler will make one.
Emily Scott
The Phantom came up in conversation at my regular movie trivia this week and a friend was telling me that it was originally written as a comedy, but then another studio took it over, didn't know about the comedy aspect, and filmed it completely straight. I already wanted a Dick Tracy ep but now I really need that Phantom ep as well.
Wyatt Gray
I have a sinking feeling that it will come down to Highlander vs. Happy Madison and Ben will be forced into a Sophie's Choice. So anyway I'm voting PULP because I've been meaning to revisit The Rocketeer. I've been loving March Madness this year by the way, thank you for all the hard work the BC Team put in!
Andrew
Did someone order a root canal? Because we're here for pulp!
Emily Parker
LET ME HAVE MY WEDDING SINGER EPISODE
Anthony Pierre Coco
Ahhhh you nerds. Go Sandman!
Josh Darby
I'm shocked I thought "Good" Sandler was gonna go the whole way!
Mesfin Mebrate
The Spirit is all I'm here for.
Corby Weyhmiller
Hahahaha.
Doug Robertson
Mostly because Dick Tracy and The Rocketter will be better than Water Boy and Wedding Singer
Jay Kay
Guys we can’t miss a breakdown of little Nicky a truly insane film
Evan
These matchups ultimately come down to uniqueness for me, and Pulp Heroes is simply more interesting than episodes about some of the most talked-about comedies of all time. Extra pulp, please.
Joel Cunningham
Tabletop is taking it!
Jeff Burnett
The anti-comedy contingent of blankies is back, even though the Austin Powers episodes were S-tier
Del Lorenson
Seeing these two H2H, kinda surprised Sandman never dipped his toe into a pulp hero comedy. The career arch lined up perfectly with the pulp hero "moment" and seems like a genre ripe for a high concept comedy
Ryan Spearman
A vote for Happy Madison is a vote for Carl Weathers
bigcabba
Pulp has so much interesting content and people we've never discussed. More varied. Same cast and crew with Sandler. Plus, comedies aren't as interesting to listen to on the Patreon. More fun to watch, but it's just the guys laughing and describing bits. That said Austin Powers kind of ruled.
Scott Carberry
50/50 ! C’mon pulp heroes!
I am a robot who turns into a car and I find no humor in this
Sorry, but I can't not vote for The Rocketeer
Chet Kazalski
Folks, we’re just picking who is going to lose to ALW
Ryan Michael Liston
So close!
Aaron Summers
Will happily take Waterboy and Little Nicky over Phantom and Spirit, thank you.
Curtis Bellemer
I agree, would love to get a John Carter ep!
Tobey
C’mon, Pulp Heroes! Slam evil!
Dante Cuestas-Thompson
Happy Madison Origins aka default Sunday on every bachelor party I’ve gone to
Austin McDougle
it’s too damn hot for a penguin to be walkin’ around!!!!!
Fred Mercado
Hard agree.
bigcabba
I think so. How much juice can you get out of Sandler films as far as content? Same cast and crew and the guys just laughing at the movie. So much interesting context with the PULP movies.
Peter M
Ok but if we do Pulp Heroes can we get commentaries on Warren Beatty’s bizarre Dick Tracy webisodes?
Begemott
C'moooon pulp! Those movies are so fun and weird, and comedies are never as good for commentary, imo.
ryan mcgrath
If it were only the first 2 sandler’s I would vote for happy Madison without hesitation.
Jeff Brax
I cannot sanction his buffoonery
Benjamin South
In Little Nicky there's a guy with boobs on his head
Alex Staniloff
I love the Sandman but Dick Tracy AND The Rocketeer? C'mon!
Zak Goldberger
Yall should throw John Carter into pulp heroes now that Stanton is out - only reason to do Stanton anyways and I feel like it’d be better as a commentary
Nathan D
Very fun I think. There's probably only one good movie on the list (Rocketeer) but the rest are big swings with big stars the that miss... bigly. So I think they'd be interesting commentaries.
Ted Bogart
You gotta get back in here, they're starting to turn on George.
Martín Peréz
Do you really want to hurt me!? Do you really wanna make me cry!!
Tom Houseman
This is the most conflicted I’ve felt all month. Both series seem great for different reasons.
Jack Barr
I've never seen any of the pulp heroes films....would they be fun to talk about?
Jack R
Pulp for me!
Alex Papaioannou
Voting Happy Madison, but this made me laugh so hard that I was momentarily swayed
Beardmask
I thank Adam and all of the Happy Madison crew for the comedies of my youth, but nobody beats The Rocketeer. Nobody.
Michael Curley
I think this will be close.
Missi Information
Look, only one of these characters ever dared to have the courage to Zoom In.
