“What’s gooning?” Griffin’s slightly anxious tone with this question will remain in my head for the rest of my life. David, you won’t see this but you don’t have to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. You do, however, have to watch Cowboy Bebop because it’s the coolest piece of media to ever exist.

Savannah

Holy fuck this was an intense repressed memory of discovering this show at a sleepover in middle school and having nightmares for YEARS

Rice

True or false - griffin pronounces anime that way explicitly because he knows it annoys people?

Geoff Kriz

Never knows best.

A few things - both of the detectives wind up escaping into fantasies, but one is nostalgia and one is modern escapism, showing how neither the older nor the younger generation have the answer to this problem. The old man's equations total up to numbers that are relevant to future victims (e.g. 521 is Tsukiko Sagi's apartment number, 1 is Ichi, etc), and that's the significance of the younger detective's equation at the very end of the series, his equation results in a number that will be related to the next event that will cause the cycle to repeat. Great ep, I rewatched the series and couldn't stop thinking about it, subbed just to hear your thoughts.

Hey so the dossier...it's SO GOOD! TOP TIER. ..I have a question. At 43:53 - 44:58 I heard this on the ep: "Tokyo godfathers has 5000 frames per 10 minutes" "Paranoia agent has LESS than 5000 frames (for all 13 of its episodes)." ..where did this info come from? I can't even google my way into finding a source for this, it seems. I loved this hyper technical detail!

x2

Great series as always, but I do have to voice my befuddlement at the choice to do a whole episode about Paranoia agent but not even mention that he wrote the first section of the anthology film Memories. His section was my favorite and would have made for a great discussion about how it informs all of his work going forward.

I was one of those kids watching the show in 2005 on Adult Swim… my junior year. No one I knew saw it, and I’ve been waiting for someone to talk it forever! Love this! I’ve been wanting to rewatch for so long!!!

Norman Normalperson

Can't thank the BC crew for turning me on to Paranoia Agent. What a fucking show.

Eric McKay

I’ve been listening to the pod proper for about a year, and finally decided to make the Patreon jump. Thanks for doing something worth $5 of my money a month!

Jon Holt

I feel compelled to say that FLCL is objectively good

Matt Rombach

Libby Watson shout out was a nice bonus, we love Libby!

Tom Rammer

I would absolutely pay extra for a Patreon Tier that shares the dossier each week!!

Matt Melton

Nobody: Sims: Did you say cyberspace?

Russ

Love Blank Check and love Doughboys!

Nicole Paschen

I watched on crunchyroll in Japanese with English subs but had to go into audio options to find it

Shane Warbrooke

Am I being a massive goober or has patreon removed the ability to download this ep?

Carl

Crunchyroll really was bad to watch this on--it had an English dub and nothing else, and subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese but not English.

energydiluted

Great episode about an incredible series, the friends really did this show justice. I've seen this show 3 times and they pointed out things I hadn't noticed yet.

Steven Ray Morris

David! I saw this on adult swim back in high school and holy fuck it just felt like from another universe

Patrick

You guys are amazing. Thanks for doing this series. And for getting me back into movies. The podcast dropping feels like running down the stairs on Christmas morning once a week.

Cal O'Boyle

David is the German criterion collection TV 2 part “film” World on a Wire on your cyberspace list? I believe it’s based on the same short story as the 13th floor. Bizzaro greatness and definitely early cyberspace if not the actual earliest.

Jeremy Jones

“Family planning” is often used in supermarkets to describe the section which sells prophylactics. Hence the brand name. “Happy family planning” is just a joke on that this “family” is planning to commit suicide.

Cory McCasland

It took the mention of Little Slugger to remember I had seen most of this on the Adult Swim airing.

Kerry Browne

I remember you guys getting yelled at over not having some biography level of citation and being so irritated by that but am glad something really cool (JJ dossier) came out of it

Tyler Duggan

As a person who did watch this in 2005, yeah, it was sorta mind-numbing and all-consuming.

Rad Rodge

Not that this isnt obvious but I would love to hear the guys do a new Oppenheimer episode with another guest every year, first few minutes instantly proved the well is still deep

Joe Skonce

"that's the golden path" -god emperor David Sims

Bluvbot

I was one of those teens who watched this on Adult Swim in 2005, one ep at a time, week to week.

mikey GOLDSMITH

The dairy dude!

Joanna Patterson

WOW

Onslaught Six

When they talk about the title appearing randomly about 10 minutes into every episode (about an hour into the podcast) they are actually describing the "eyecatch," which is a bumper that almost every televised anime has to surround the commercial break in the middle. 99% of television anime will have this, just a random graphic or short animation with the name of the show. It's basically "Paranoia Agent will be back after these messages."

Agiddysea

Saw this on Adult Swim and it was wild!

Joseph Leeper

That’s not what gooning is lol. That sounds horrifying.

Calvin

Thank you!

Begemott

Oh HELL yeah
