I was a test screener for Van Hellsing back before it came out and we did a questionnaire about the series after the movie

theres a lot of weird left turns that could be on that list too.

Getting caught up and instead of a new series on comic strip movies, what about 90s post Batman comic serial movies: Dick Tracy, the Rocketeer, the Shadow, and the Phantom?

I love this movie, wholeheartedly and unironically. Yeah it's goofy as shit and is bad in parts but I don't care. Patrick Wilson is so good and Gerard Butler is so hot, like bro can just sleep on the other side of the bed and I'll kiss your sad little sunburns. It's Beauty and the Beast for Hot Topic girlies!
David Kirk
If your going British newspaper cartoons The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp would count. BTW there 7 St Trinian films. The 1950s ones are actually quite fun.

After Saturday Night, every time my wife puts SNL on I must say, “IT’S A NIGHT OUT IN NEW YORK!!”

I also love this musical, less for the story which is dumb, but for the music and the drama of the whole experience. My little musical theater friends and I went to see the movie and all hope of enjoyment died the moment I heard the singing. I am hoping the success of Wicked has a set a precedent for casting actual singers in your musical!

The Broadway show got me at every extension. In that last year, I saw it 4 times bc I kept panic buying tickets
Maricela Gonzalez
My hot take is that Love Never Dies has like 3 songs worth of ALW's best composed music but OG Opera Ghost still wins out
Maricela Gonzalez
Oh no I am perceived! This movie was BIG on my Tumblr

did griffin dream that puppet musical?

I actually enjoyed this movie. Of course it pales in comparison to the stage show yada yada, but I enjoyed my time with it. Plenty of stuff BC has been way more kind to that I have liked way less. Just putting it out there to represent the small venn diagram of “Who likes this movie?” and people who also listen to Blank Check.
Kurt Farschman
Ben wins the whole episode with the, Christmas is kids gooning for presents, line.

They're musicals from one author, ALW. Not indicative of the entire genre?

Ya think thetwofriends follow dril on letterboxd?

A musical series by three guys who evidently don’t like musicals very much was an interesting choice, lol.

When my friends snuck into Phantom at our local mega plex I decided to instead go see In Good Company instead.

I’m sure in the future every podcast episode will be specifically catered to your personal experience

If anyone wants to imagine what Antonio Banderas would do with the role, here’s him performing with Sarah Brightman during an ALW music tribute. CW: sexy. https://youtu.be/j9qLfyLowjg?si=GaQpHaypitcMFcoP

Sigh…I am obligated to tell you all that duuuuuun dun dun dun dun dunnn is stolen from Pink Floyd. Yes, I’m exhausting.

I can’t imagine sincerely liking this movie. The actual stage musical is great for being melodramatic schlock, but you need the best singers on the planet to pull it off. If you just have actors struggling to sing the arias it falls on its face.

The Palais Garnier? Quite possibly the most beautiful building in the world. Would love to haunt that place

Looking for monster musicals with goth vibes? Might I suggest “A Taste for Love”, music and lyrics by Peter Bretter?

Weirdly this film has the same fan base as a lot of the prequels. Liking Anakin and Phantom go hand in hand as the “I can fix him,” starter pack. (I know from middle school friends, I was overdramatic and thus obsessed with Brad Pitt’s inexplicably accented depiction of Louis de Pointe du Lac.)
Stephen Flechsing
You ask who likes this movie? It's my sister in law, who watched it every day after school. She watched it so many times that my wife, who hated it, hid it in the top of the closet for 3 years, until her sister found it when they were moving.

David’s daughters pivoting to ‘there’s a tree and you gotta wait’ is the most succinct description of 3yo logic leaps.
Isabelle Iverson
insane take, i fear
Glenn Peters
I didn't see it come near me, and I wasn't in middle school at the time.

*David: Does this movie have fans? It must. *Me: Smiles and raises hand *Griffin: It doesn't. *Me: unsmiles and puts hand down sadly.
Mike Ostrov
When David said that quote, he was assuming the perspective of a movie exec deciding when would be the ideal time to make a Phantom movie. Also, it was the longest running show in a huge tourist destination that also toured everywhere and could be done by middle schools. It was more available than most unfilmed plays.
Caroline Pruett
The touring show was pretty ubiquitous at one point but I grant that's also pricey.
Caroline Pruett
This also feels like the place to say that I was very amused, when visiting the Paris opera house, that they had no official 'Phantom' merch for sale but did have souvenirs with masks that sure look a lot like the Broadway logo. Like, they'd probably sniff at you if you asked about it but they know what some of the tourists are there for. (I have never sseen any version of Phantom but played it in high school band in the 90s. At the time I assumed this was some classic piece of musical theater, not that it was less than 10 yrsold).
Caroline Pruett
I need 'Challengers could sweep' 'That would fucking rule' as a ring tone. Liked the rest of the episode too -- this film definitely has its fans, esp for Gerard.
Spencer Pommier
The best thing this movie gave to the world is the Night Wish cover
Donald W Pratt
Hilarious how they were talking about Jamie Loftus at the same time they were saying no one was a fan of this movie. She could have guested to tell us all about how much she loved it.
ipsydipsy
As someone who’s only Broadway experience was Phantom on a field trip in middle school, that is a completely valid point. All three of these guys have probably seen shows the average person could only dream of attending

There have really not been enough of these callbacks but they do hit hard as a result

I love this musical (and agree, it isn’t necessarily ‘good’ but is so much fun!) and was so devastated when it came out — even at 13 I was like oh man this sucks. I hope with the success of Wicked we get a new film version that leans into the exaggerated gothic sexy campy aspects. Was also surprised Wicked wasn’t discussed much as an end-of-the-year musical Oscar contender but makes sense if they were having this conversation in July 😅

I always thought the opera was super fancy because Pratchett parodied it, like Macbeth.

Gooning for presents.

Am I insane for preferring Love Never Dies to this

another wonderful election conversation! 😀

"Everyone who wanted to see the show has by now" Not everyone lives in walking distance of Broadway. (Or can afford it.)

hearing David refer to home runs as "dingers" (~25 min in) fills me with indescribable joy

I love POTO but it IS fun junk.

The hardest BC has ever made me laugh was ARPs callback to CRASH!
David Draper
Seeing this on Broadway was such an experience though…
Patrick McEvoy
The one piece of music that everyone remembers - the one the guys keep singing because it's the only really catchy tune? ALW completely lifted that from Pink Floyd's 1971 song "Echoes". Just one more reason this thing sucks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlhUob7ZERI

I just relistened to the live fanfare episode like three days ago, when John Hodgman is the Phantom of the Brooklyn Opera House hahahah, I totally forgot this was coming up in three days
Antonio Melgar
Fun fact: in the show the Phantom was originally going to have the classic full mask (which is why that’s what’s on the poster) but they changed it to a half-mask because the full mask interfered with the mic.

Kinda feel that Shameless stole Emmy Rossum from us
