BC March Madness 2025 - Day 21
🕑 Added 2025-03-21 18:00:14 +0000 UTCIn a victory for felt freaks everywhere, the Muppets move on to the next round!
Up today - lots of charismatic movie stars of the 90s being hot, being in love, and being iconic.
It's Elmore Leonard Adaptations vs. Richard Curtis Rom Coms.
With Elmore Leonard, we'd cover a curated selection of four films:
Get Shorty
Jackie Brown
Out of Sight
Be Cool
With Richard Curtis rom-coms, we'd cover five very British romances:
The Tall Guy
Four Weddings & A Funeral
Notting Hill
Love Actually
About Time
So, what say you - Jackie or Julia?
Comments
Hannah K. Garden
As much as i love Love Actually, on balance i would rather watch the elmores. Maybe someday they will get Lindy West on for a special Love Actually only episode 🤩
William Hanzel
And all the Brit jokes David could make (or be made about him)!
Barbara Anderson
The wilder (pun unintended) is that blazing saddles and young Frankenstein were in the same year, so some could say that the blank check was actually the producers that initially bounced but cleared big time down the road.
Anthony Strand
I voted for Mel mostly because he had one of the startling blank check runs ever in the 70s. Blazing Saddles was a big hit that gave him a blank check, and he cashed it in to make Universal monster spoof in B&W. That's a big swing. And then Young Frankenstein was an even bigger hit, so he cashed in *that* blank check to make an actual silent comedy in 1976. Absolutely bananas behavior!

Bong would tell you
Rad Rodge
I honestly thought the exact opposite about who would cruise, even with Bong as a past finalist, I think Mel Brooks has actually never even done as well in March Madness as I thought he would, this year OR last time. I voted for Bong but my reading of Blankie demography has always been that Brooks is a lock for the final four, he keeps running into stronger headwinds than I expected and perhaps happily I can rethink at this point haha
Matt Demello
I voted for Mel. I'm more interested in those discussions. History of the World Pt. 1, The Producers, SPACEBALLS!!! Ever heard of it?!
Harley Richard
Most shocking upset so far. I don’t think I was the only one expecting Bong to cruise to the final two. This opens that side of the bracket way up.
Olivia Haidar
In other news HOW is Mel Brooks beating Bong Joon-ho?!
Chris Almberg
Man, bummed Richard Curtis is behind- all fast paced and fun movies, and that’s what makes for the best commentaries imo.
David Figueiredo
Big same it's not about what movies are better is about what would inspire a more entertaining commentary, also an excuse to watch some movies I otherwise might never
Jon Arnold
I voted for the return of the UK bit.
George Seabrook
Everyone voting for Elmore Leonard is out of their minds, this is reverse UK bit aggression!
Good
Finally a win! Still sucks we don’t have a straight comedy series. I hope next year we get American pie and Adam Sandler movies.
Shane Rhyne
Honestly, I'd prefer watching the Elmore Leonard movies, but I voted for the romcoms because I want to hear David talk about the British Christmas songs tradition and listen as they try to explain Love Actually in general.
TimeGentleman
Shout out to whoever's picking these matching images for each post, I'm always impressed!
zero
I'll no doubt be put in the Tower, but only one way to vote.
Glenn Peters
This is why I voted for the RomComs, for Tall Guy recognition.
Chris Radicone
I went on a cruise in 96 and this was one of 3 movies they played so I've seen Get Shorty soooooooo many times I absolutely love it.
Ian Joshua Postman
Be cool baby
Sweetjimmyt
STOP PUTTING BILLY MADISON UP AGAINST KID SHIT!!!! aGGGHH..
Good
😂😂😂 so many gems
colony of birchmen
Think I'd rather watch Killshot
colony of birchmen
"Fuck you, fuckball!" is an all-time line.
Hadley Anthony
About Time is one of the best rom coms ever made! David would totally love it.
Christopher Weithers
Could they please do the Elmore Leonard series, and then just sneak in the Tall Guy? It doesn’t get talked about enough.
E.Z. Hart
Aww, neither version of The Big Bounce?
Good
Get shorty is going to be a fantastic commentary. 🔥🔥🔥
Emily Scott
I WANT Richard Curtis. I do NOT want to listen to David savage Love Actually.
David Rosenblatt
its a win/win .. Leonard means we get to watch some of my favs, Curtis means I get to fill in blind spots. GET OUT AND VOTE BB
Patrick McEvoy
I really enjoyed that one!
Patrick McEvoy
Have we heard why they aren't doing 3:10 to Yuma (either version)?
CT13
Never again Hugh Grant
Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)
I voted for Elmore Leonard this time...didn't I do it, baby, didn't I do it, baaaaaybeeee
David Draper
How about a write in campaign for 1985s Stick? Directed by and starring Burt Reynolds with Leonard writing the screenplay based on his own novel.
Manish Agarwal
This victory will be JUSTIFIED
ryan mcgrath
I voted for Jackie Brown. I want one of the most underrated movies to beat one of the most overrated movies.
Will Redmond
By making them too good and successful???
Christian Mayfield
Has anyone seen 52 Pickup? I enjoyed the book but haven't gotten to it.
Will Redmond
This is my real "do both" day
ComedyCrowd
You’re fortunate not to remember Be Cool. It’s sacrilege after the fantastic movie that was Get Shorty.
ComedyCrowd
Pirate Radio should definitely be on the Richard Curtis list. One of his best films in years.
ComedyCrowd
Be Cool is so bad; I recommend you switch it out for one of the lesser-known adaptations.
Njord
Curtis would be fun, but just think of all the different directors and their contexts we’d get to engage with for Leonard.
Njord
Two times with Jackie won’t kill us
Geoff Gershon
LOVE seeing the Curtis hate here. :) I feel like he helped kill the rom-com....
Geoff Gershon
Love Actually is a cinematic crime.
Geoff Gershon
Yes PLEASE Elmore Leonard - three of those are legit great movies while most of Richard Curtis' stuff is trash or mediocre at best.
Regis L
I wish "About Time" was "In Time"
David Draper
Be Cool the novel is ok, but the movie is terrible. Both versions of Shorty are amazing.
Jeremy M
Vote curtis, they’re completely insane and none of them are boring
Marie
insane to not want to hear David talk about 90s-00s british ephemera at any chance we get
Jeremy Dankowitz
One of my favorite movies of all time and I’d love to hear it covered on the main feed first but had to vote EL anyway
Hoot n Waddle
Not a big fan of the Curtis oeuvre, but any excuse for British Bits is welcome.
Rachel H Smith
TIME TRAVEL ROM COM
JTA
Clearly gotta hold it off for a George Armitrage series, which... I would strongly consider voting for instead of either of these options. They call it Pod's country... until all hell casts loose!
Chad Perry
I prefer the films in the Curtis library, but don’t want to listen to my favorite podcasters shit on Love Actually for two hours lol
bearisonford
Why would you assume we'd never get a QT series?
Anthony Oleszkiewicz
We need to set aside Brown for Tarantino
Maximilian Katz
Since we’re probably never going to get a Tarantino main feed series, I’ll at least get to hear #thetwofriends get to talk about Jackie Brown this way.
Colin
I hate Richard Curtis
David McElroy
Just read 2 random EL books (Bandits, then Swag)... i love the vibe... let's go EL!
Keira Q
Still firmly on the Romcom train! Every time David gets to talk about Britain is golden, hop on y’all
Daniel Hensel
petition to include Paul Schrader’s Touch (1997) in the Elmore Leonard series
Khar
W results so far
Aaron VanTuyl
I am now seeing Big Bounce omitted from this list? Clearly a mistake
Jeremiah Drueke
I want EL to take this whole thing. 3 out of those 4 films are classics. I really don’t remember Be Cool.
Aaron VanTuyl
So happy to be on the right side of history. SOMETIMES THEY BIG BOUNCE, BABY!
Matthew O'Reilly
Go away Richard Curtis
