No, the sequel - Psycho II - is a whole new thing and it's really interesting and fun in it's own right. Does something different with the character that makes it far better than you'd expect a 20 years later sequel to a classic to be. The 1998 film Psycho is the shot for shot remake that Gus Van Sant did.

I’ve seen the first psycho and it’s awesome…but isn’t the “sequel” just a shot for shot remake? Sounds like a boring reaction…no idea about psycho 3…but with Robocop you get a hall of fame classic, a weird/but good capsule of early 90s what the future will be, and you end with a completely silly over the top end of the trilogy that would be worth it just for the merchandising spotlight that Griffin will do for it.

Both of these series start with a legitimate classic, but Robocop is followed by two diminishing return sequels quickly. Psycho didn't get a sequel for 23 years - the original legacyquel! - and against all odds, it's interesting and adds to the original. And the Robocop remake is a boring nothing, while the Psycho remake is a truly insane swing.
