The setup in The Mission is a true story- it came up in a wwii documentary I watched- possibly the world at war series which came out in the 1970s. Sadly in the real life story, the plane landed, the ball turret gunner was killed, and the whole control tower and ground and plane crews watched it happen. In a war full of horror and tragedy this was one of the most chilling individual stories I had heard. Still haunts me to this day.

While it may not solve all of its problems, I wonder if The Mission would be improved if the landing gear just happens to work when they try it one last time instead of becoming a cartoon version. That way it’s more about the power of hope and belief, than one man’s frightening ability to reshape reality.

Yes, that’s true. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City affected broadcast television signals in a way that sometimes created a ghost image on TV screens. How It Worked • The north tower (WTC 1) had a massive broadcasting antenna that transmitted signals for several major NYC TV stations. • The towers physically blocked and reflected signals, creating a phenomenon called multipath interference. • This caused some TV sets, especially those using over-the-air (OTA) antennas, to show a faint ghost-like double image of the broadcast, often an offset or shadow of the main picture. Why Did This Happen? 1. Signal Reflection – The signals bounced off the buildings, causing delayed versions of the same signal to arrive at different times. 2. Obstruction & Diffraction – The towers blocked and bent signals, sometimes leading to distortion. 3. Analog TV Susceptibility – Before digital TV, analog signals were more prone to multipath interference. Did It Stop After 9/11? Yes. After the towers were destroyed, NYC broadcast stations had to relocate their transmission sites, mostly to the Empire State Building and later One World Trade Center, changing how signals were transmitted. This phenomenon was unique to analog TV; today’s digital signals handle multipath interference much better.

“Walking Distance” is I think one of the most hopeful and nostalgic original Twilight Zone episodes that may have been interesting to adapt. However, there is the tragedy of what happened to Gig Young and his wife that clouds it. I think I am biased because that’s one of my favorites.
