BC March Madness 2025 - Day 15
🕑 Added 2025-03-15 18:00:09 +0000 UTCI bet you Alan Moore himself would be shocked by these results - LXG et al move on to the next round!
Up today, a couple of grumps.
It's Old Men Matthau/Lemmon vs Christmas Coal.
With Old Men Matthau/Lemmon, we'd cover four films that the dynamic duo made towards the end of their career:
Grumpy Old Men (1993)
Grumpier Old Men (1995)
Out to Sea (1997)
The Odd Couple II (1998)
With Christmas Coal, we'd cover four holiday films that rank among the worst of all time:
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Santa Claus: The Movie
Fred Claus
Red One
Which sourpuss takes it?

Josh Mclane
One is glorious and the other is filled with the worst holiday shit possible. Le sigh.
DDrive
Hence the name!
z
Oh. this is madness
Ross Kroeber
The winners of the whole bracket(s) are the only ones guaranteed to be covered this year. They may cover a lot of the directors and franchises in here *eventually*, but that could be 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, even longer away, these all take months to do and add up.
z
I’m new this year and have been confused all month. What does it matter who wins March madness (Patreon or main)? Aren’t they going to cover all the poll winners?
Danielle
No Vaughn thanks. He maga.
Alex Berg
Old Men Matthau and Lemon really should include JFK
Jose S. De Leon
Christmas Coal needs to include Santa Claus vs The Devil
ryan mcgrath
This feels like the 2024 US election. Remember who was on what side when the history books are written.
Anthony Strand
Blazing Saddles is the other thing a lot of people see that has David Huddleston in it. He's one of the townspeople.
Anthony Strand
Griffin seemed really excited about the idea of Christmas Coal in a recent episode. I don't remember which one.
Sam Wickersham
I caught Santa Claus Vs. The Martians on public access in Austin, TX, one night after ACL like 15 years ago - it's truly dire without the MST3K treatment. Was trying to use it as background noise to go to bed and I'm not sure it's even worth that. Anyway, this particular stand-off is fine (I ended up voting Christmas Coal), but I can't imagine Griffin or David are champing at the bit for either of these categories. Still hoping for a PK Dick victory at the end; to my mind, those have the right ratio of highs to lows that make for a fun Patreon series.
Jack R
Get Doughboys on a Red One ep
Jessica
Oh come on, late Matthau/Lemmon would be amazing. Not only is it older people being funny and cute but the movies are horny!
Josh Harvey
Vote for the Claus It’s for a good cause
Ryan Caldwell
I watched Santa Claus the Movie all the time, had it on VHS, and nobody would ever know what I was talking about. Give it that blank check bump!
overthebw
Red One commentary is this year's DND commentary, could go all the way on the heat of 1 pick.
glenn clothes
Honestly? I know it might not, but I hope Santa wins the whole thing. The Santa Clause commentaries were hilarious. Plus, since the movies suck, you don't have to worry about watching them beforehand without commentary if you've never seen them. #santasquad #christmasinmarch
Nick Maddox
It is CRIMINAL that Matthau/Lemon isn’t winning
Alexander Annand
This is ‘Santa with Muscles’ erasure
Maricela Gonzalez
Old Man Matthau/Lemmon raised me
Stan
DO IT FOR BEN
Tom
Lets get grumpy!!!
Brian Schellenberg
Honestly, the gang doing commentary on a couple of the original unedited movies featured on MST3K would be a kinda fun mini
Kenneth Chambers
I have misjudged the winner on almost every one of these first round patreon matchups
David Ranallo
I remember as a child being very excited at “getting” that the commercialization of Christmas was the real villain (spoilers?) all along and have been very lukewarm in Christmas ever since
Jay Kay
I mean Fred claus is a canonical griffin is always bursting to talk about movie and I’d kill to hear all his red one takes
DRC
I had Santa Claus: the Movie: The Storybook as a kid and have never watched the movie. If it wins, maybe I finally will.
Jeffrey Malone
I'm voting XMas mainly for those dang Martians (Any interest in adding the 1959 Mexican Santa Claus movie to the lineup?)
Good
Gross
Good
Why is Santa winning? No way y’all like those dog shit movies
Good
90s movies of course! The grumpy old men deserve a rewatch. I loved those movies growing up.
Reuben
I don’t think either are making it to the final, and that’s ok!
Les Chappell
Not wild about either, but I do love the idea of finally making David watch Red One.
Taylor Creery
I wanna hear the boys talk about old spice cologne for 6 hours!
Brandon Melling
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians makes Christmas Coal the obvious choice here. That movie is insane in the best possible way.
Justin Burgess
My wife loves Santa Claus: The Movie (a childhood favourite). I think it's just okay, a little boring. John Lithgow is unsurprisingly great as the villain. Might be the only other movie I've seen The Big Lebowski in (as Santa).
Joanna Patterson
A Christmas Coal series would really help out my annual holiday BC re-listens…I love hearing the boys lose their minds over Polar Express and Christmas Carol, and more holiday themed eps would really round out the ol’ Xmas binge
Jay Kay
Fred Clause and Red One seal it
Jed Vrazo
I know they aren’t (that) old in it but the fact they wouldn’t do odd couple one is kind of bummer.
Cordlessphone12
This sucks lol
Regis L
Abstain
David McCallum
Those Christmas movies are kinda enjoyable.
John W
This is the Hindenburg of choices! Oh the humanity!
D
wow lemmon/matthau was my reddit request a few months back. VOTE OLD!
Brian Schellenberg
If you want a commentary on Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, go watch Mystery Science Theater 3000. Speaking of products of Minnesota, the Grumpy Old Men movies are a lot of fun.
Matt
I want to hear about red one because I’m not going to put the effort myself into figuring out how bad it is.
Jason Feffer
I feel Santa With Muscles should be included here…
JFox
Whoever wins, we lose.
John-Paul
Coal all the way!
sheabobay
MERRY XMAS BITCHES
Charlotte Langdon
The original Two Friends
Bairbre
Those of you who voted for bad movies in previous rounds just to make David suffer, do you regret it now?
Charlie Wetherington
The Grumpy Old Men movies are what my heart wants, but there's more variety in the Santa movies.
Ruairi Carroll
Whoever wins, we lose
Tashmon Dimps
I need to hear them pay off the Red One runner so badly. Vote for Christmas Coal!!
big red robot
Wow cannot believe that got berenstain bearsed in my mind, would have sworn it was Lemmon & Matthau.
Steve Runyon
Fred Claus is *so* incredibly bad, I have to vote for it!
Terry Ballard
Bonus episode... The friends go ice fishing!
Jon-Erik Means
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of casual Red One dumping in at least a dozen mainfeed episodes so far and it’ll probably be mentioned in another 20 to come.
Keef
Tbh I don't want any of this.
Chris Lynch
Grumpy old men! I just want them to watch the bloopers 😆 “Looks like Chuck’s taking the skin boat to tuna town”
Robert Carroll
I've changed my vote 3 times, and just need to get on with my life!
John Halski
I know what the right and virtuous answer is, and I also want to hear them dump on Red One for 90 minutes.
Kibblesmith
I can’t defend why but it fully counts
GrrNoise
I feel like the 2 Friends haven't learned their lesson about how watching multiple bad movies doesn't make for the best "commentary" track (talking Claus here)
Tereglith
My usual profile pic is Chochem from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, I can't not pick Christmas Coal.
Ryan Hennessy
Grumpy Old Men was the funniest shit ever when I was 11. I need to see how they hold up.
Holden Martinson
Why would I want four bad Santa Claus movies where they're like, "This is bad. How much time is left?" for a non-insignificant portion. I get that it's more of a hook than Lemmon/Matthau (just do Billy Wilder, which would be breezy and everyone would/should be grateful for), but also... no thank you.
Seth Johnson
I feel like there's a crowd that just votes for the worst movies, and I don't get it. We can get good bits and good conversation with a decent movie in the background, honest.
Liz Norris
I was surprised that My Fellow Americans wasn't included too, but it turns out that was James Garner, not Walter Matthau.
Spencer Asmann
OLD PEOPLE!
Jake Vogt
Christmas Coal honestly sounds like one of the most fun ideas in the whole bracket
Rad Rodge
I am indeed pondering it
youngthugisthegreatestlivingrapper
I'm currently working my way through the Dungeons and Dragons commentary, and they are pretty locked in. My only minor complaint is that I wish they'd watch the movies ahead of time so they at least know the plot
Douglas “Scoop” Reinhardt
I mean if you like the episodes where they check out on the movie and talk about anything else for two hours
Jack o Diamonds
Out to sea is quite funny
Njord
Christmas coal, and it’s not even close
Janine Liberty
I really think that if Ben hasn't seen it, he would get a genuine kick out of Out to Sea. Voting Grumpy Old Men for that alone but also because these are some fine movies.
Kibblesmith
What does it say about this entire enterprise and us people willingly trapped in it that the votes are always this close
herb
If Christmas Coal wins I will riot.
big red robot
Disappointed there's no My Fellow Americans. I'm sure my memories of that film at like age ten would hold up.
Michael Curley
Whoever wins, we lose. What terrible choices, haha.
Austin McDougle

Don’t Sleep
DECADE OF GRUMPY OLD DREAMS
Andrew Wyslotsky
Matthau Lemmon has to win, just for the outtakes in the grumpy old mens
Brian T Arnold
Christmas Coal sounds miserable.
Tobey
I watch along, and I tend to have a better time when the guys are actually enjoying the movie. No way do I want to actually watch Red One!
youngthugisthegreatestlivingrapper
Christmas Coal NEEDS to win the tournament, it's such an amazing run of terrible movies that would make for insane commentaries
James O'Brien
I implore you to watch a clip or trailer from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians before voting!
Thomas Blake
RED ONE RED ONE RED ONE
Khar
Obviously Santa Claus oh my god
Ross Kroeber
Get Red One outta here, heard enough from Griffin about The Rock (usually whenever Vin Diesel comes up) to last a lifetime. Sometimes we can just leave yesterday’s soulless boring blockbuster as is, without puffing it up to some spectacular proof of industry deterioration for two hours
