Note: cold doesn't kill most micro-organisms. It does stall the growth/propagation but does not kill unless it's extreme. This is why you're told to clean, prep, and cook food even if it was frozen, it doesn't sanitize it.*: There are different tolerances and survival mechanisms for different microorganisms, this is all in general.

I feel like it's understandable to not know that glacial water could be dangerous. Especially since extreme cold temperatures should kill most germs. That being said, it's wild that nowhere along the chain of him getting to the glacier and drinking the water, not a single person thought to look it up.
