Chapter 11 scenes and artwork
🕑 Added 2023-08-12 15:28:02 +0000 UTCAs promised, I'll share a bit about the process behind this last chapter's scenes and the artwork that illustrates it.
In the images you can see the usual 4-setp process I follow when creating them: first, the line art is drawn and sent to the colorist, who sends back the second image. I give it a third pass adjusting colors and adding an additional layer of rendering, polishing textures, adding deeper shadows, rim lighting and other details to make the figures pop. Finally, the background is placed and I paint the ambient lighting, trying to make the figures more readable and the colors more interesting, setting the overall mood of the scene and tying everything together. I also add any layered images needed such as tattoos, accessories or clothing.
In this chapter, some drawing have been partially outsourced to other artists. After trying a few, I found a couple of artists I wanted to try and work with. I chose my reference image, drew all the faces and hair of the characters and had the artist do the rest (mainly bodies and surfaces). This way we created some kind of Frankenstein monster of a drawing that, once colored, looked pretty close to my original drawings. If I didn't take care of the faces myself though, the drawing would've looked too out of place, since the way character faces are drawn is very distinctive to each artist.
In the end, this meant that the workload I was outsorcing wasn't that great, since I still had to invest quite some time in the art, plus adjusting any mistakes done by the artists and micromanaging the commisions. Still, I'm looking for ways to delegate more on the art side, and I will still employ artists for minor scenes, like Lena's Stalkfap recording, in which I only drew her face and hair in each image. To me, the final quality of the images is not as high as I'd like, but it's close enough to feel like a good compromise. What do you think, did you notice any difference while playing?

Looking at the first 4 pictures: If I would make it to picture one, I would be very proud of myself. Reaching picture 2, I would think "there is nothing more that can make the picture even better!" :D . Looking at the third and fourth ones, I come to the conclusion that the subtle changes and adjustments are hard to spot even in direct comparison for the untrained eye, but they do make a great difference when looking at the picture. The last pictures feel better even though I could not tell why if I would not see them side by side. I just skipped the other pictures and just read your text since I don't want to get any spoiler. I really appreciate that you still try to put quality over saving time. Even though you only source out bodies but no faces it must be still kind of hard to let others interfere with your baby, right? What I would love to read about is why you arranged a certain scene the way you did. Even better if you did if after the release of the chapter containing the scene and choose a scene that "everybody" will have reached. For example: Why did you let Ian and Holly/Lena go to the park to talk and not to an ice palor or out in the woods? Why did you decide to let them talk about Holly's parents and not her view about Emma's saving-the-city? Why is Ian standing on the left side and not on the right? Or for the first picture here in this post: Why did you put Lena on top? To make her look like she is a little more the driving force in this act? Why do they have their eyes closed? To imply a little shyness, a little making-love-and-not-just-sex? Why does she have her top just pulled down and not of? In order to do something with it in the following pictures or because of aesthetic reasons? Or scene-placing: Or why did you decide to let Cindy go exactly that far in the first photoshoot with Axel and not further nor tamer? Why is the photoshoot exactly in this chapter? Why did chapter XY start with Lena and not with Ian? These are just stupid questions and many of them will have "just by chance" as answer. But you are doing many micro and mini decisions with a certain reason or agenda in mind, right? I would love to read about the why storywise, not just the how. But of course, you don't have to reveal all your secrets to building a believable story :) . And don't put too much work in it. :) .
