It is best to start with a simple cast painting, like the eye, and proceed into more complex ones like this.

The cast painting looks like the final study in grisaille, before starting to study color; which exercises should I do between the grisaille sphere (the first exercise in grisaille) and this one?

Nothing special- just rub some oil paint and a little linseed oil over the surface with a rag. Let it dry a few days. Have also used thin acrylic for this if the primer on the linen is also acrylic.
Any chance you would do a quick video on how to prep the canvas the way you do? I used turpentine and black wash, but I was wondering if you did anything special.
