I always thought Zuko's sudden change feeling off was intentional. It's not like Zuko once he joins the gaang is as unnaturally optimistic as he is in this ep, he's still....well, Zuko. I always saw it as Zuko not yet fully changing, but more as he's acting like he thinks Iroh wants him to.

What I like about Azula as a villain is how she kinda comes up with plans as she goes. Like, she doesn't have all the answers from the get-go. We SEE her collect information and adjust her course ON SCREEN. She left her home just to defeat capture Zuko. But then she ran into the Avatar and was like "oh shit, I can get him, too!" Then she gets into Ba Sing Se so she could capture Aang, not even aware Zuko is there yet. She gets some info from the Earth King, THEN sets her sights on taking over the Kingdom, and comes up with a plan. She learns Zuko is in Ba Sing Se from Katara? Hell yeah, new plan! Get Zuko to join her to complete the plan! It'd be so easy for her to just stay off screen all the time and then just come in at the last moment like "I DIVISED THIS ALL ALONG!" for some shock value. But they don't do that.

I agree with your paragraph at the beginning, I almost thought Zuko was hamming up his happy act because in reality there was still too much of his obligation to his fake ideal of honour that Azula exploits in the next episode. Still an effective way of making the heel turn very sad though
