can we talk about how obvious it is that Katara was supposed to be the next avatar, not Yue? 1. We know the water avatars rotate tribes just as the air avatars rotate temples. The previous water avatar to Aang, was Kuruk, who was from the northern tribe. The literal next water avatar has to be from the southern tribe… so we have Korra. 2. Yue and Katara are essentially the same age. In terms of avatar longevity any lifespan is possible and reasonable. The math for either checks out. 3. We know that bending has BOTH genetic and spiritual components, the fact that I believe, in universe, Katara is the only bender we canonically know of who had two non bending parents. I mean god damn Yue was part moon horcrux and still isn’t a water bender…

I am almost sure that in the Kyoshi novels it is mentioned that Koh is one of the spirits that can create paths between the physical and spiritual worlds, like Father Gloworm or Hei Bai.

With regard to normal animals, I head canon that Brian & Michael set up this entire universe of mixed animals all for this one throw-away joke about the Earth King having a normal bear to further underline how "weird and unsettling" Ba Sing Se is. The few other normal animals that you were able to find were probably animators and artists just thinking "they can't ALL be mixed animals, can they?"
