As much as this episode is a mess I actually do mess with Iroh’s wisdom about positivity and negativity. I don’t think it’s as simple as “just look on the bright side,” I think it’s more speaking to the idea that you can always find negativity and it’s very easy to be consumed by it. There’s nothing inherently wrong with acknowledging negative things or feelings but it isn’t healthy to marinate in it all the time.
JaKABOOM !
Korra wouldn't have had to fight Vaatu if she hadn't opened the spirit portals, which child Korra wouldn't have physically been able to do, and I imagine that Aang would have been old and wise enough to not be tricked into opening them.

You know you're famous when you can just go 'hooray!' at the crescent moon and have it hit so well.

when it's put that way, it does make a bit more sense, but the show obviously could have explained/shown it much better than it did. to me, it just feels like they needed to force the conflict and didn't remember that Wan Shi Tong didn't give a shit even when the fire nation was killing spirits... he literally just didn't give a shit in ATLA lmao. bro wanted to read and avoid drama, and I can really fuck with that energy.

I always read it as Wan Shi Tong helping the one human who is trying to screw over literally every other human. I don't think he cares much about the human war going on, he just cares about the spirits, and we don't know what he knows through Unaloq. So seems pretty in character from the way I took it.

Hey Overanalyzing Avatar Would you be interested in getting a roll as a voice actor for a character in the Avatar The Last Airbender Book 4 Air Restoration Project? If so you can dm them on Twitter or replay to one of their posts. As a fan of the book 4 air restoration project and you I think it would be a cool collab. I recently watched one of their livestreams the jackbox one and me and other viewers including the voice actors would love to have you onboard. They told us to tell you about it so here you go.

To be fair it was Teen/Adult Korra who opened the Spirit Portals so neither Aang or 5 Year old Korra would ever have gotten the chance to fight Vatu

wan shi tong never gave a shit about the war even after the fire nation had burned a bunch of stuff in his library and KILLED A SPIRIT. he just wanted to chill and read. having him take unaloq’s side because he’s been a “true friend” to the spirits (which doesn’t make sense either because he’s unleashing Vaatu which all the spirits despise and fear as shown in beginnings) is just really lame and destroys his established character as just not giving a fuck and not wanting any kind of war whatsoever. his goals and his motives were beyond the humans and physical world which is what made him so cool but for LOK he’s like “aight guess I can fuck with the human” for no reason

The North-South civil war was just a distraction for the Human-Spirit war, in which Unalaq is on the side of the Spirits, which Wan Shi Tong can definitely support, being a Spirit with an intense dislike of humans

I will be there soon...

I can’t believe you didn’t mention the fact that wan shi tong helps a human get the edge on another human in this episode. like I’m not trying to be all “you should have mentioned this or you forgot to mention that” but like come ON man, he literally takes a side in a human war in this episode, why tf did they do that?

I wonder if they still would have put that dumb plot point of Gyatso being in the spirit world in Netflix Avatar if they hadn’t put Iroh in the spirit world here

in my head it kinda makes sense that when they enter the spirit world they are present there with their soul/spirit and in order to leave they'd probably have to meditate or at least focus on it for a while and not get disturbed or something. Idk if this makes sense to anyone else or if it's just my head trying to make sense out of this lol
Chibi
I'd say they didn't spare Wan Shi Tong, I swear the entire reason for sinking the Library was because it's knowledge was used for violence. You would think that Unalaq ambushing Jinora would also be taboo. Also the "Dark" spirit designs were more creative in ATLA, Hei Bai and WST looked very different when angered.

Also Korra's face at the end. Idk if it's me but it's super creepy to me more than sad

Another day, another overanalyzing video ✊🏼

Jinora said "my grandfather *was* the avatar", not 'is'
