I mean, Jon was expecting to still have his web lighter, which they needed to blow up the Archive and all of that. So he was planning on doing the "kill the whole world" thing by preventing the Archives from being blown up, but he wasn't able to because... the archives did get destroyed. I guess it was just a choice then of stay in the weird painful in-between state where he was being pulled with the rest of the fears through the web portal (which didn't seem sustainable) or break the link (by dying) and go through with what was going to happen anyway with Martin (especially since he said he couldn't do it himself). Tbh I figured that the tape was the one last remnant of the fears and once they turned it off, it was the end of all of it (I assumed it was the tape recorder from the panopticon, but I don't really have evidence for that)
