This was so nice! I know next to nothing about jazz but this was still as super lovely, fun, interesting, and generally delightful as always. <3 For the weeaboos around, there's a lovely anime (and manga) called Sakamichi no Apollon / Apollon on the Slope about Japanese teens getting into jazz music. I still don't know anything about jazz but I enjoyed it very much.

I really enjoyed this! A few additional recs based on topics that came up: Movies about jazz history / jazz musicians: Questlove's utterly stunning documentary 'Summer of Soul: or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised' came out earlier this year, and has the most extraordinary archival footage (originally intended for tv broadcast) of the Harlem Cultural Festival that occurred summer of 1969. If you want an immersion in Black history, culture, fashion, and the many vibrant strands of music (jazz, soul, funk, gospel, et al.) cross-pollinating at the time, this is absolutely where I'd recommend starting. It made me cry the good tears and go hunt down All The Music. Jazzy anime music: in addition to Cowboy Bebop, I highly recommend Nujabes' soundtrack for 'Samurai Champloo', which was the first music album I ever bought myself - it's held up really well. Think of the style as old jazz classics remixed to a hip-hop feel; really neat stuff. Trombone solo love: stepping outside of jazz proper, the fabulous trombone part in the musical Hadestown just blew my mind. If you love trombones getting to strut their stuff solo, definitely check that out! An impromptu jazz session with the musicians and singers on this episode would made an *amazing* Patreon bonus some time, just sayin'.
