VB Gonna Be A DJ: Vic's Bowie Mix
🕑 Added 2022-10-03 15:00:06 +0000 UTCI saw the David Bowie Moonage Daydream doc in iMax last week. Enjoyed much of what's in it, had some MAJOR issues with it but, ultimately, I'm happy it got me back into listening to David Bowie.
I hadn't been on a Bowie binge since college twenty years ago. Been hearing his albums in a different light now as an old man (40). He's just such a cool and complicated artist. Imagine going out in the world and miming for people who paid to see your rock show!
Anyway, I love Bowie and I hope you do, too. Here's a mix of my current faves.

Also saw this at Cinema21! Enjoyed for the most part, and feel that the way footage was used across time, to relate different ages or ideas, was sometimes effective. Some sequences are quite bombastic and perhaps the sound could be mixed differently toward an improvement. Nice to see a bit of clandestine footage I'd not encountered, particularly some of the travels and theatre and art work.

I agree. If it comes up on the show, I'll bring out my notes to talk about it. It felt like a commercial without a narrative. The dude who had SEVEN YEARS to make it said his main influences are Led Zeppelin laser light shows and Disneyland...

Saw this documentary with some friends in the theatre (Shout out to Cinema21 !). I found it transformative. It hit me at a level beyond emotion and I was genuinely shocked at how much it reinvigorated my artistic urges. I was never a Bowie fanatic but this auditory/visual collage of a document woke up a dormant creative spark that I am very thankful to have been gifted. Plus the post-credit moment was a joy that felt personal and individual.

Will check this out! I saw MD in the theatre too and it was a great way to see the visuals and music. I loved seeing footage I’ve never seen before. I added the “Ricochet” documentary on my YouTube playlist.

I actually kinda hated it. Made Bowie seem like a hugely pretentious prick. But I'm not a big bowie guy so maybe he actually is a hugely pretentious prick and I just didn't know it before. The animations (especially the 'space' ones) were also clunky as hell. I couldn't hold it in when the CGI skeleton started spiraling into space! The film feels like a feature length version of one of those millions-of-views youtube clips of 'bowie on art' or whatever, with some concert footage and awkward animations sprinkled in.
