There's a history to the vellum/quest system that gets revealed over the series. As for the old guard, they're there, but they've been given different tasks as pointed out several chapters prior. He also took on the advice of veterans throughout every plan he came up with, it certainly wasn't all him. They've also always had a bit of a vellum shortage, which was pointed out mid-book. As for how it'll all come down, that's next chapter. I accept your feedback in the manner it was given, but there is a plan here. Just got to get to it.

I find myself agreeing with the criticism direction of CherMi. Like a rising tide lifts all boats and a little too much time has been spent the the MC's martial/fitness progress over his quest wright path. While you did mention Sal from Quest Academy branching out from just crafting It's been six books and he is still being guided my his teachers and parents and hasn't been given leadership in a meaningful way yet. Cass being given leadership of the city was a shock and not the good kind. I know that 3 of the 5 leaders of the council were taken out but did these people not have aids or people under them. In a city that was built by people who survived an apocalypse and there is no one who can be a beacon of hope in the entire city except for Cass Where are the old guard. Is no one from the companies good enough/neutral. Are all the old survivors dead did every group after the city was rebuilt join without leaders This feels like Borderlands 3 Ava getting siren powers just because she is Ava. This kid has zero experience he has been in 3 fights with monsters ambushed twice and had his class 3 to 6 months he should have been laughed out of the room even with mentors letter of recommendation. Do they not have paper in the city. They sure as didn't have any velum at the start of the apocalypse. HOW did quest wrights hand out quests at the start. Did they shake everyone's hand, put up flyers, post signs, write on the ground, carve wooden tokens or write with monster blood. This "there is no more velums" feels like a very arbitrary excuse for the MC to not use his powers and i don't believe it was ever stated they had to use velums for his ability to work.

I'm fine with this kind of analysis. So, to clarify, you're of the belief that if Cass doesn't solve this like a QuestWright, it'll invalidate the premise of the story?

CherMi

I'm going to be honest, the way Cass is entering the battle is disappointing. He's a QuestWright and yet in this upcoming battle his class will be irrelevant. There's no more vellum, so no quests; he's still locked out of new paths, so no Tactician so far - and even if he unlocked it next chapter, again, no more new quests, so impact would be limited. His Survivor path and Profile will be the only ones working, and it's good, but that's not the essence of what QuestWright is. It would be normal in serial format, but as a book - the end of book one - it basically makes it that his quests are irrelevant, they'll win (likely, depends on next chapter) without his quests, just with his leadership. The blurb on RR promises logistics and improving the city through quests, but that last part of book one deviated quite far from that: first into relationship, then into a crisis and now into his war leadership. The ending without quests is just an icing on that cake. Judging by the name of the second book, it's going to continue after the battle and that's likely where we'll see his quests with proper paths, which works great in uninterrupted serial. But as a book, so far I would give book one 4 stars because it doesn't deliver what was promised (so far, I may change my mind after the book ends). Anyway, I hope this didn't come off as too harsh, but since it's the draft version, maybe my opinion will somehow help the book. Also keep in mind that I personally enjoy the lirtpg and logistics aspects of the series and am lukewarm about relationships and fighting, so maybe I'm in minority among the readers here. Overall I'm enjoying the series and can't wait for more.
