State Of Grace was my first Gary Oldman movie. He made quite an impression. Unfortunately it's a gangster movie that came out at the same time as Goodfellas and Miller's Crossing, so it didn't get nearly enough attention.

The Edge (1997). A great survival/adventure film, with some mystery elements to make it even more interesting. I think it's a masterpiece. I wish more people had seen it! It's currently the film I choose each month for the spin wheel!

Black Dynamite (2009) is probably the funniest movie of the past couple of decades, but marketing really dropped the ball and it was only released in a handful of theatres.

Oh, Locke! That is definitely one of the most actually underrated ones. Tom Hardy is very good in that, specifically because of the physical demands of his acting in that film... ...As the entire film takes place in a car (except, I believe, the opening scene... which is before he got in the car 🤭). Oh, and Tom Hardy is the only one in the car. The only physical actor in the entire film. Sooo. Worth it. I really liked that film when I first saw it, and I've rewatched it several times with others who also found it gripping. Underrated is apt. Edit: I want to go ahead and try to get in front of the "spoiler" that its all in a car, and him being the only physical actor - I state this not to spoil anything, but to characterize as unmentioned aspect of the production that, I believe, is necessary to better compell people to check it out. While these two things are integral to the story, they're not "spoilers", it's just the nature of the story it's trying to tell. What Locke's story is about *is* the story. He's just a man that got off work and got in his car.

there have been 2 noir polls before, and both were in 2023. type film noir in the 'search posts" bar if you are curious to see what films were on there. and yeah 2 hitchcocks won handily, beating the likes of Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd, The Big Sleep, The Third Man, Touch of Evil, The Killing and others. Older film polls generally have less engagement(for example the recent Action film and horror film polls both had 750 total votes each, but the film noir polls only had between 450-550 votes each. I recall one person commented "I've never heard of any of these films, so I'll sit this one out."

I actually haven't seen Purple Noon and I guess the impression that I had was that while it is also adapted from the same novel, it took much larger liberties, to the point where maybe it was more "inspired by the novel" than anything.

I doubt Spartan has any chance of winning a Patreon poll, but damn, that's such a fun movie. It's got a peach of a Val Kilmer performance and some of my favourite hard-boiled Mamet dialogue. I think about lines like "You don't want to go in the desert" and "You've got to set your motherfucker to receive" all the time.

So many good choices, hard to pick one. Hmmm, Rounders, Time Cop, The Verdict (one of Paul Newman's best IMO), Stardust, Leaving Las Vegas (you won't watch it twice). Gotta be The Verdict for me, but you should watch them all in a movie marathon.

You should remove Ripley's Game from future polling until you've seen The Talented Mr. Ripley. Ripley's Game is sort of like a half-sequel, in that it is based on a book that comes after the book that The Talented Mr. Ripley is based on. It's not technically a sequel, but it would still probably be more ideal to see The Talented Mr. Ripley first...and potentially The American Friend, the much more widely-seen and acclaimed film that adapted the book that Ripley's Game is based on back in 1977.
