Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is a great horror comedy (but it is a little gory), The Conjuring is great too, and so is the Color Out of Space

Some good choices. The 70s SUPERMAN is pretty much the "original" big-budget superhero movie. It's a lot different from the ones these days, but you can definitely see how it influenced them. As for horror, THE FRIGHTENERS from 1996 is always a fun one. It's more spooky than scary, and it was LOTR director Peter Jackson's first big studio film.

If you're looking for some scary but not gory films for October, here's a few (sorry if you've already seen any): What Lies Beneath (Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford) The Woman in Black (A very depressed Dan Radcliff) Paranormal Activity (don't remember who) The Others (Nichole Kidman) The Sixth Sense (Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osmond) Signs (Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix) The Grudge (Sarah Michelle Gellar), although it's not as good as others on the list it has lots of jumpscares.

I will never not laugh at the phrase "Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?!", so Rush Hour it is. Some other recommendations: Shanghai Knights/Shanghai Noon, speaking of funny Jackie Chan movies. Arrival (the 2016 one), is great if you want a movie that makes you think. And if you really want to appeal to the nerdy nerds, all 13 Star Trek movies. They aren't all amazing, but none of them are truly bad.

Alien seems like it would be a sci-fi film, but really it's a horror film set in space. And it's a 4 film series (really 6 films with the prequels that are pretty good too) that become sci-fi action as it goes. Manhunter (1984) is a riveting prequel (sequel? I'm not sure which is set before the other) to Silence of the Lambs with none of the same actors. It did poorly in the box office but has since become a cult classic. The Birds is a classic Alfred Hitchcock horror film about...well birds. 😀 Someone else suggested The Evil Dead series (the third one is called The Army of Darkness) which is an over-the-top Horror with gore that is almost comical in its excess and the films turn more comedy as they go. If you're feeling brave enough to tolerate the gore of a zombie film, Dawn of the Dead (the 2004 version) is amazing. The Dead Zone (1983) is about Christopher Walken who emerges from a looong Coma with the ability to psychically tell by touch what evil people are doing in secret.

Peter Jackson directed The Lord of the Rings which you are loving and he also directed a comedy/horror movie called *The Frighteners* with Micheal J Fox (In an unusually emotionally down role for him) that is fantastic.

Peter Jackson, the director of the LotR trilogy started in the horror genre, you might have fun checking those out. His first few are really gory so avoid those. He directed one in the 90's with Michael J. Fox called "The Frighteners" that is scary/funny you might enjoy.

Since I haven't a favorite, I list them in alphabetical order. 😁 and you have to choose if you want to add one of them: - Black Rain - Dead Poets Society - The Martian I love these films and I think you would too. And since you asked suggestions for October, here is the ultimative cult series of horror films: The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness (or if just one film, then only Army of Darkness) Okay there may be 'a little bit of gore' 😂 but at least it's also funny, especially Army of Darkness. Did you watch Queens Gambit? Its a very short show (7x1hour) and it is very entertaining because it is unpredictable and centers on characters reacting to each other in a quick moving storyline. Netflix produces a lot of experimental stuff, some is bad and some is good. This one is great.

Ju-on (the original Japanese movie adapted as 'The Grudge'). Highly freaky and a really cool concept. There's just something about foreign horror movies that hits me in the creeps in a way wholly unlike any American horror does. If you're down for scary game suggestions, I also recommend playing the Fatal Frame series. They're all connected, but can still be played individually if you don't want to do all three main games. If you were to only pick one, most people like the second one best (Crimson Butterfly), but the third is my favorite (The Tormented).
