It occured to me that my Christopher Pike Medal of Valor winning question can also be applied to DS9 (and every series honestly), so: What kind of pizza would each of the main cast order? In my opinion, Sisko definitely has some sort of sausage on his pizza.....
I do feel like back then you could get away with more obviously offensive Jewish-related joking on TV, but how or why this level of awful made it into TNG and DS9 so blatantly with Jewish people like Berman, Piller, and Ira Steven Behr running and writing this show is just plain astounding to look back on now, and is a clear indicator of how times have changed. I don't believe this level of anti semitism on anything more than maybe a one off episode would be tolerated now. I'm hardly a prude (watch Ricky Gervais's "the worst joke ever" on YouTube), but in the immortal words of Secunda: "Ferenghi are Anti Semitic, Come On!"
Look, I'm 50 this year and despite my rejection of DS9 in my youth, watching it again has improved it a bit in my estimation, the acting, the writing... even my hate for the Avery Brooks choice is waning a bit (though I will never forgive him for that beach scene). And Armin Shimerman could honestly have won an Emmy for his performance. But the Ferenghi race is without a doubt the most openly and long running anti semitic trope in a mainstream show - a supposedly progressive show at that. Their voices are whiny, they're greedy, they're duplicitous and constantly lying, they're weak bullies (like when Nog puts his bar cleaning punishment on his son) instead of big noses they have big ears, they treat their women poorly and the women are off screen, and despite their tricky nature, they can be tricked themselves in venal ways like by stroking their ears. This isn't intentional "Jewish humor" like Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiam, Ross on Friends, Seth Rogen jew-fro jokes. This is just ridiculous, and this Nagus episode is the epitome of it. Jewish actors playing most of the Ferenghi roles doesn't somehow excuse it: they're just doing good jobs acting the nasty archetype, and justifying it that way comes across a bit like saying the N word and claiming "but I have black friends!" If I hadn't stopped watching DS9 by this episode this would have stopped me anyway even when I was younger. I picked it up later but never shook my dislike for this.
