Chapter 3.4
“Watch your footing,”
There was an immense crash as a dune exploded outwards, violent chakra and physical matter grinding against each other. Baki grimaced, patting away the sand that landed on his shoulders. From the collapsed mound of sand, Gaara emerged, a scowl marring his features. Baki’s heart skipped a beat before settling into a steady rhythm. This was not the same Gaara he’d witnessed rampaging through the desert, he reminded himself. This was not the same Suna, he added a second later, glancing at his Kage.
Rasa stood a few dozen feet away from Gaara, his body coiled in a low, open stance that made the most effective use of his gold dust. Even from a distance, Baki could see the small smile playing on his lips. Two weeks ago, if he saw the Kazekage sparring against Gaara for the sake of bonding through training, he would’ve assumed someone had placed him in an ill-thought out genjutsu.
Here and now, it was a daily occurrence. Baki smoothly jumped away as a massive spire of sand came rushing through the area he’d occupied moments ago. A tanuki’s face formed briefly in the sands, snarling as it slammed against a wall of gold dust. Gaara burst through both a second later, his lithe form shrouded in a chakra cloak that almost hurt to look at.
Both father and son had improved in leaps and bounds since Suleiman had come to Suna. Gaara’s cooperation with his Tailed Beast increased every day, evidenced by the relative ease with which he could coax the Biju’s chakra to manifest.
The boy’s physical parameters, which had always fallen short of his sand techniques, had increased massively. Even without calling out to the sand, Gaara was strong, with punches that could shatter the ground beneath their feet and send opponents flying away. His speed, though somewhat lessened by the lack of time the boy had to train his reflexes, had gone through the roof. Even Baki struggled to keep up with it, and he liked to think he was fairly quick. But it wasn’t speed or strength or even his greater capacity to wield sand that had changed most, it had been Gaara’s durability.
In that state, nothing short of Baki’s strongest attacks could hurt him. Only a team of ninja working in tandem could force him away, and even then, Baki thought that was mostly him trying to take Suleiman’s lesson of ‘dodging, not blocking’ to heart than anything else. It made him shudder. If the Gaara of yesterday had had access to this level of power, Suna might have been little more than a smouldering crater by now.
It wasn’t just Gaara that had improved. Rasa’s control over his own Gold Dust Release had improved noticeably, even if the increase in skill and sheer power had not been quite at the same level as his son. That little fact had brought everyone up short. It made sense when it came to Gaara, for he was cooperating with his Biju for the first time in his life, but Rasa? The Kazekage had posed question to the most likely suspect one evening. Curiosity had gotten the better of him, and the Jonin found himself leaning forward in anticipation.
Baki still remembered the smile that had spread across Suleiman’s face.
“What one is mentally – one’s experiences, the life lived – determines how much yin chakra one has,” the spirit had echoed Rasa’s words back at him. It took a moment for Baki to understand, eyes widening just as his Kage’s did. A short laugh escaped Baki’s lips. All that time spent trying to grow stronger, all those days wallowing in anger and grief, and all it had taken was to embrace the very emotions that his leader had shed to make himself a better shinobi. If Rasa’s eyes glistened in the lamp light, Suleiman did not make it seem like he noticed, continuing to smile gently.
As his leader and his student’s chakras reached a crescendo, Baki wisely retreated, keeping his senses trained on the pair so he could bring them food and water when they finished their bout.

Before my eyes, colour returned to the old woman’s skin as a tiny, infinitesimal shard of my energy began flowing through her veins. I could not heal in the truest sense of the word, nor could I truly put a stopper to death – such things were simply beyond me, no matter how hard I tried.
What I did here, I proceeded to repeat through the hospital ward. Incurable diseases were coaxed into silence, pain was banished, and death itself was asked to embrace those waiting to go into its embrace gently. Namo’s Peace echoed in my footsteps.
It would not stick, I knew. It would not change the inevitability of their passing.
I smiled mournfully as I witnessed a mother embraced her daughter’s sleeping, peaceful form, free of the suffering that had plagued the child’s form but a moment prior. Her father turned towards me, touching the knuckles of my hand with his forehead reverently. A wisp of something golden and pure bloomed within me, growing steadily stronger as shock gave way to gratitude and acceptance.
It would not change the inevitability of their passing, but that was no reason not to help.

“Brace yourself,”
Temari had less than a second to react, bringing her war-fan up as the man before her exploded into motion, reaching her in the time it took for her to realise he had moved at all. The steel mesh in the fan, reinforced with chakra over the years, absorbed the blow. She redirected the momentum behind the blow as Suleiman had taught her before, twisting her body at an angle. She caught a glimpse of a smile forming on his face even as he was sent hurtling away from her, dozens of feet away. He landed on his feet as he always did.
Temari breathed heavily.
The move still took a lot out of her, but it was incredibly useful. It involved refining her wind chakra to form a barrier between her fan and the opponent. She’d gotten the technique behind projecting her chakra outside of her body easily enough, but the trick lied in making the barrier strong enough not to shatter, but flexible enough to redirect rather than try and put a stopper to the force it was up against. It required of her perhaps the most precise application of chakra she had ever tried in combat till then, forcing her to account for a range of factors to successfully change the trajectory of an opponent.
“With practice and a lot of failure,” Suleiman had told her, “This move should be able to deflect most physical attacks.” At Temari’s grin, though, he’d firmly insisted that she dodge if she felt even the slightest bit unconfident.
“Good job,” Suleiman shouted over to her, grinning widely.
“Thanks!” Temari shouted back, grinned just as widely.
Even from a distance, Temari could feel the pride he had at her growth, almost as if his emotions were a physical thing. She furled her fan, strapped it to her back, and approached him with a skip in her step.
She wasn’t quite certain what it had been that had drawn her to him in the first place. It wasn’t merely that he was good-looking, though she wouldn’t be able to deny that even in the privacy of her own mind. There were loads of good-looking guys in Suna and beyond that she’d met. It couldn’t simply be his strength or the way he made teaching look effortless – if that were the case, she would’ve been attracted to Baki-sensei, she thought with a grimace.
It hadn’t, as she’d thought initially, just been the fact that he’d helped her and her family in ways no one else could have done. That had certainly gone a long way in warming him to her, but if that was the sole reason, she would’ve stopped. Gratitude could never be the basis of a relationship, though she supposed they’d never really put a label on it.
As she looked at him now, standing easily, almost lazily, despite the heat of the sun bearing down on him, it clicked in her mind. It wasn’t his appearance or his strength or the many great feats he’d already accomplished in such a short timeframe, it was the subtleties of his demeanour. He wasn’t brash or loud in his victories, no matter how incredible, he wasn’t afraid to confront danger but nor was he intent on making enemies. His was a quiet, subtle confidence – in himself, in others. It was faith, she realised, faith of a measure and quality other ninja simply didn’t have, as if one’s course in life was utterly inviolable.
The thing that had settled it for her, she thought, was that despite all of that, he’d never once looked down on another or shied away from extending a helping hand, even to those who couldn’t possibly offer him anything in return.
She stood in arms reach of him for a moment, letting her eyes trail up to his. Here, miles away from the village proper, she could afford to express just a tiny fraction of how she felt. Her lips pressed against his, and suddenly, his arms were around her. If her cheeks were wet when they broke off for air, he didn’t say, continuing to hold her tightly, warmly.

For my plans to work against Iwa, I – and the hundreds of people who were counting on me – had to be certain that I could not only hold my own against multiple opponents when I was cut off from support, but winwithout resorting to massive, flashy techniques that would undoubtedly alert enemy forces to my position, cutting off the campaign before it had ever begun. I wouldn’t need to do so for an extended period of time, but certainly long enough for reinforcements to arrive to back me up. I had to be able to do so when I was utterly exhausted, to boot, which meant no Singing, no fire, no techniques save barriers.
To that end, I’d been sparring against Baki and a few other Jonin at the same time, learning to make the most of Prana-Bindu. As a side effect of draining myself before doing so, I was able to include my Barriers into my fighting style in ways I simply couldn’t have without trial and error.
I’d been incredibly stupid before not to rely on my Barriers more, as Toshiko Harana – a quiet, almost scholarly Jonin who mostly worked in R&D – hade made explicitly clear to me.
“How do the barriers work?”
“Hm?”
Toshiko adjusted her glasses. “Summon one.”
I did so at her demand, pointing to where it existed. She poked and prodded at it with her finger, letting flesh bounce off of what looked no different than air. Then she shattered it with a sudden punch, her eyes trained on me.
“No feedback when they pop?”
“Not at all.”
She asked me to summon one again, this time testing it against a mild, D-Rank technique. A thin blade of wind slammed against the barrier, cracking it but not shattering it. “Can you reinforce it?”
I did so, restoring it to its original quality.
“Does this level of barrier have any sizeable drain on your chakra?”
Shaking my head, I proceeded to make five more, adding a tint of iridescence to them so she could count them herself. What followed was what could charitably be described as the outpouring of scientific curiosity. She asked me if I could layer them, which I could. She then asked what the difference was between a shield made with enough ‘chakra’ for two versus two individually weaker shields layered together. It turned out that a shield made with enough energy for three weaker ones could self-reinforce to some degree.
If I turned it up to one made with enough energy for five, the rate of self-reinforcement increased noticeably, to the point where the previous wind technique’s damage had repaired without conscious effort on my part in a matter of seconds.
“Can you expand the shields once they’re made?”
“Is it possible to move them?”
“Could a shield be concentrated at one spot after creation if you know where the enemy’s attack will land?”
“Is there an upper limit to how strong they can be?”
I experimented with them, learning more about a power I’d barely been using in one afternoon than I had in the weeks I’d had it before. Between overseeing Gaara’s Jinchūriki transformation, training with Temari and Kankuro, Singing metal into existence, war-planning with the Kazekage, and increasing my own physical abilities, I simply had not had time to truly experiment with my powers. Toshiko was a godsent, even if the rate of fire of her questions could exhaust even me.
“Your shields,” Toshiko had said to me, the others in our group having gone their separate ways once they became bored enough, “Are quite possibly one of the most versatile powers I’ve witnessed with my own eyes. The number you can create is limited solely by your chakra reserves, you can layer them, you can create stronger, self-reinforcing ones, you can move them around, and the upper limit to how strong a singular shield can be seems to be a B-ranked technique. You can’t expand them or concentrate them once they’re made, but that still leaves much room for the sheer range of potential applications.”
“How do you mean?”
“For one,” she said, breathing out lightly, “I wouldn’t call them shieldsto begin with, because that implies they can only really be used for defensive purposes. Think of them as solid chakra projections with some limitations on the form in which they’re summoned, and tell me what comes to mind.”
Two mental partitions fired off simultaneously, going over the possibilities. Then, I created a barrier front of her and willed it forward. She didn’t resist, letting the shield push her back one step. And two. Then three. She pushed her hand forward, popping it.
“I see,” I said slowly.
Toshiko nodded, eyes trained on mine. “Indeed. I’ll need time to think of other applications for this, but this came to mind near instantly. We’ll go over some of the other ways these can be applied during combat if you’re limited to using Taijutsu and barriers tomorrow.” She stressed the word as if it offended her existence.

“I can’t seem to draw on it quick enough,” Gaara admitted to me after a bout of training. I was breathing just as heavily as he was. Both of us had been pushed to our limits, if for different reasons. Baki and the rest weren’t going easy on me once Toshiko had explained the new limits of my barriers to them, doing their utmost to push me further and further. I didn’t always succeed in holding off all attacks, often having to retreat further, but each day changed how far I could push myself, how long I could hold out.
Two minutes turned into five, five into ten, and ten into twenty. Twenty minutes in a fight between ninja might as well have been an eternity, even if the Suna-nin weren’t exactly coming at me with the intent to kill.
It was the evening before the campaign would officially begin. Early in the morning tomorrow, a large contingent of Suna-nin, Gaara, Rasa, and I would leave for Iwa. I did not know how long we would be gone for, so once I was done with training, I decided I wanted to spend the little time I had here in Suna with the people I’d come to appreciate here. Gaara was on the top of that list. We sat on the roof of the Kazekage Tower, watching the sun slowly descend below the horizon.
“I’m not sure there’s a way to accelerate that except practice,” I admitted to him, nursing a container of water. Gaara looked my way, then down to his feet, saying nothing.
“Hey,” I called out to him gently, “What’s on your mind?”
Gaara was silent for a while, looking out at the sloping, domed houses stretching beyond us. “This’ll be the first time I’m matched up against another Jinchūriki.”
I frowned. Gaara had never been the sort of person to fear combat, so why the sudden change in mood? I asked him, letting the question settle on the sands.
“I’ve fought before. I’ve killed before. I’ve battled enemies that a Genin was never supposed to and come out unscathed. But never like this, never-” he hesitated, looking away from my gaze. “-never when people I cared about, people who cared about me, were counting on me.”
So that’s what it was. I closed the distance between us, laid a palm on his shoulder, and forced him to look me in the eyes.
“Gaara,” I said, gentle, firm. “You might not realise this, but you’ve always had people who counted on you. For all that Suna spited you, for all that you grew distant from all others, you were always their bulwark. Even at your worst, you carried on your shoulders the last embers of hope they had against the predations of those who would have seen your village burn to cinders. It didn’t seem like that at the time, it wasn’t fair to you, but that was the reality of it.”
Gaara started, eyes narrowing. “And I failed in all those aspects,” he nearly snarled. “What happens when we’re at the border and Han shows up, or Roshi, or both, and I’m not ready? How many people will die because of my failures?”
He turned away once again. I considered what he was saying. This wasn’t simply the case of a boy who’d had an overwhelming duty placed on his shoulders before he’d even drawn breath. This was a boy who had begun to care for others, had begun to love others, and found it threatened by circumstances beyond his control. “If you at your worst could shoulder those responsibilities for as long as you did,” I said finally, “Then I have every confidence that you, as you now are, will find nothing but triumph where you expect failure.”
“Besides,” I continued smiling, elbowing the boy. “You didn’t have me before to kick you in the ass.”
A small rush of air escaped him almost unintentionally, but his eyes didn’t lose their hardness, didn’t look my way. I closed my eyes. This was a boy who’d lost faith in himself just as he’d gained it in others and simply didn’t know what to do with that.
I stood up, dusting off my pants. From the peripherals of my vision, I saw Gaara glance my way. I smiled, closed my eyes, and looked inwards. I felt the Blue Wind of Magic rise up from within me. It all came down to faith in the end, didn’t it?

A haze of blue light surrounding my form, crackling dangerously, snapping at the air as if it would rend it apart in an instant. The noise increased until it was too loud to ignore, till the brightness of my form competed against the descending sun.
I was distantly aware that the spectacle had been noticed by those below me, that one shout had turned five heads, and five whispers had turned twenty, and twenty pointing fingers convinced a hundred to see me, till ninja, villager, blacksmith, merchant alike looked up at the sky where I floated. I could spot Baki standing on one of the domes, could see Kankuro and Temari exiting a forge in a hurry as the clamour outside increased. Even the Kazekage, as busy as he undoubtedly was, exited his office on a cloud of gold dust, ready to defend his village against an unknown threat.
Then, I reached towards the heavens, arms outstretched.
I felt the spell take hold, felt my energy drop massively as I forced nature to conform to my will. The sun’s last rays were obscured first, mist took shape, condensing and flowing far above even me, and then there was a sound not unlike the crashing of a hammer on the anvil, a distant rumbling.
It began slowly.
At first, it was merely a drop that danced off the clouds that now blanketed the land as far as I could see, dark and pregnant. It fell through the air, glancing off my palm and down again. I smiled at him. He returned it almost tentatively.
The clouds spoke like a thousand gongs struck at once, and then it rained.

A frown was beginning to take shape on her face at my continued silence.
“Do you have nothing to say?”

So yeah, is there a plan for the MC about the fallout of this action?
