I thought it odd too that in the news a lot locations were called "strategic" without any context.

I agree. I am making the second part of the Donbas video and it looks like that no one has been able to take the territory with a direct attack, so the only way is encirclement, which in this case is impossible.

It feels like Ukraine may be in a difficult position because it can't (for diplomatic reasons) violate the territory of Russia, so it can't credibly force the Russians to retreat from the Donbas to avoid encirclement.

Thank you. This is really useful for understanding history, but also the current war. The news usually just endlessly repeats 'strategic city,' over and over and you never understand why. (You start to think that wars are just about capturing cities, like game tokens.)
