Oh wow, Cass I would have LOVED to see your reaction to "Children of Men". Its intensity makes it such a visceral experience. I think you have sufficiently persuaded me to give "Night Swim" a pass.

I'm a huge fan of Children of Men. It, too, has an allegorical element: it's a Going To Bethlehem story (it was released on Christmas day). And it has one of my favorite types of movie heroes, the seemingly-crushed idealist who is pulled out of his hardened cynicism to become a hero again.

at the very least you gotta stop throwing pool parties once near-drownings become a regular occurrence

Night Swim should've done like M3gan and leaned into the inherent goofiness of the premise. Children of Men is one of my favorite movies, just a rough, raw movie that has a real heart. I think Mother doesn't resonate for me because it really is just allegory, to the point where they might as well just do a bible movie, y'know? Which is why I liked Noah much better, since it's by the same director that's a biblical premise but tells the story in a fascinating, visually inventive way.
The Testimony of Mushroom
Just don't go in the pool. 1 minute, roll credits. This is half the reason I don't like the horror genre generally such low lows.

Glad you enjoyed most of what you watched this month. I'm a big TLOU fan so I will be on the lookout for 'Children of Men'. Films that I watched for the first time this July that I would recommend would be 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', 'Thelma and Louise', and 'Deadpool and Wolverine'.
