As someone who studies mythology, yes hanako is an actual yo-kai, the Japanese term for spirit, other yo-kai include the kitsune, the nekomata, jorogomo, yuki-onna, taka-onna, teke-teke, and Kuchisake-onna, just to name a few

I know I'm late to the party here, but if people are looking for a smidge more context (though Danny covered the pop culture element of it) here's a little more info to the best accuracy we have available: The show Ghost Stories (originally released in Japan in 2000-2001) was an anime based on a popular book by Touru Tsunemitsu of common Japanese school ghost stories and urban legends. The anime did quit well in Japan, but not as well as anticipated in foreign markets. And watching the original version it's pretty easy to see why: it's kinda boring. I can only imagine it did well with Japanese audiences because they were already familiar with many of the stories presented, even if it was targeted to a younger audience. However, the literal subtitled version released to the American market didn't do terribly well at all. By the time ADV acquired the dub rights in 2005, Steven Foster (ADV's dialogue director) had clearly already written off the series as too boring to make any money in its original form. He was already known for significantly changing dubs he worked on, and the Ghost Stories dub basically took this to the extreme. The attorney who negotiated the release told Foster that the Japanese studio "wasn't really happy with it" and wanted him to make changes that would allow them to make more money. This was probably a bit of a misunderstanding, but it's true that Animax only gave a few restrictions which were as follows: keep the characters' and ghosts' names the same, don't change the way the ghosts are defeated, and don't change the basic plot of the episodes. That said, while this was definitely less restrictive than most dub licensing rules at the time, it wasn't actually by a huge margin. Overall, dub rights back then weren't as restrictive as they are now (as anyone who saw early Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh, or Cardcaptor Sakura dubs can attest to), and it was a dangerous lack of restrictions to put on Steven Foster, specifically. It's clear from interviews that Foster incorrectly believed he was "saving" a "failed" show, and that probably explains why things turned out the way they did. This story has gotten jumbled around a lot in the years since (with many, including the dub actors, believing its original release in Japan was a huge flop - which it wasn't). Some have suggested that the Ghost Stories dub is a big part of why dub restrictions are so much stricter now, and I have no idea if this is the case or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were true since many fans of the original version (Japanese ones especially) were not at all happy with the essentially brand new show that the dub created. Not only are Japanese studios more strict in their guidelines these days, but American dubbing studios are more careful, as well.

that's true, sort of. by the end it gets edgier (for better or worse) but mostly it devolves into very early 2000s-specific pop culture references that haven't really aged well or relatably . I definitely think early-to-mid ghost stories dub is peak and it starts to fall off towards the end.

I personally would love to see more, because literally NO ONE on YouTube is reacting to the series in it's original form. There's only reactions to compilations. But if you don't enjoy it, that's fine too! I say give it a couple more chances and if you're still not feeling it, drop it. It's much more fun to watch you have fun!

It didn't bomb in Japan, that's myth (that might have been a bit encouraged by the dub writer lol). Its actually a beloved children series in Japan similar to scooby doo. But since it's not familiar to Americans and wouldn't compete with Pokémon, they struggled to sell it. So they gave whoever bought it nearly complete creative freedom.

They took a lot of funimations early day voice actors and told them the only rules were "don't change the character names (including the ghosts); don't change the way the ghosts are slain (a reference to Japanese folklore) and, finally, don't change the core meaning of each episode"

Some fun additional facts: The writers for the dub DID have two rules they had to follow when making the script 1: they could not change the names for the ghosts 2: they could not change how the ghosts were defeated. Additionaly, the original studio had so little faith after the show initially failed outside of Japan, they didn't just LET the American studio dub it, they MADE them do it. The studio that made the dub first approached the original studio with interest in dubbing another show. They were told they would only be given the rights for the show they wanted if they also made this dub for ghost stories. As a result, the studio basically gave this to their equivalent of the C team writers and VAs, who then had a field day with it leading to the gem we have today. Sadly I can't really find the original articles on this for a source, so this story may not be the whole truth. But regardless, it will forever be my own personal headcannon.

To clarify on the story, the anime did fantastic in Japan. It was the OG English dub that didnt do well in the USA. This is the second English dub, made with few rules because of the original English dub flopping.

We did! We did ask for this! Also from my understanding the idea that ghost stories was a "failure" is very popular in the west but doesn't seem to be true. It actually did really well in Japan. It was a popular Manga there so it's release was well anticipated and actually did pretty well globally too. The whole situation is quite complex and mysterious from what I've found. It seems that the idea that it flopped came from the director Steven Foster who even at the time had a reputation of changing the dubs he got from the original to "americanize" them more. He claims that he was told that it was a flop in Japan and that he could do whatever he wanted as long as he didn't change the overal plot, any names, or the way the ghosts get defeated. And that they just wanted to cover the losses from the show. Overal it seems the exact reason he says this is unclear. (Sorry for the long comment. I'm a yapper 😂)
