If I had to guess why Toothless can retract his teeth, I'd say it has to do with not damaging them when he shoots off his fireball attack. But that's me speculating.

(Definitely follow a filler list) The show connects the first and second movies and show Hiccup developing and making some of his inventions you see in the second movie! Plus you just get to see so many new dragons

Each of the dragon has a different kind of “breath” Meatlug (groncle) eats rocks, melts them and spits lava, Stormfly (deadly nadder) has a magnesium blast, barf & belch (hideous zipleback) use gas and a spark to make widespread explosions, toothless uses plasma, and Hopkfang (monstrous nightmare) is your classic fire dragon

Hey, there are shows that are set between the first and second movie. Defenders of Berk/Riders of Berk(was on Cartoon Network) came out a short while after the first movie, and Race to Dragon's Edge(Netflix) came out after the second movie but is set RIGHT BEFORE the second movie timeline wise and gives some great context to Hiccup's feelings and motivations in the second movie.

Yess so excited for you to watch the other httyd movies but also would love it if you watch the TV series (httyd riders of burk, httyd defenders of bruk and the Netflix series httyd race to the edge. i put them in order for you to watch in for the storyline😉 [they take place between httyd 1 and httyd 2] and so your not guessing about oder to watch them in too) which are good for fleshing out the side characters and just the world in general you also get to see more dragons from the book too and a few more that aren’t the animation is kinda ehh but it grows on you after a bit so i hope you do check out the TV series as well 😁

On your critisim of the side characters being underdeveloped The movies never do them justice and dishonor them in some cases but if you watch the shows (riders of berk, defenders of berk, and race to the edge) you'll see them all get fleshed out way more aswell as some other characters that are also well written (both villans and allies) If you care to listen to the rest of my praise for the shows. The stories are well done and like I said some really good antagonists and the shows also cover a lot of things you criticized and said you wanted to see from the movies. They also introduce a ton more dragons which are all very interesting and unique (you mentioned the whispering death well they are definitely in and relevant to thr shows) and really just expands the world and makes (atleast in my opinion) a better transition into the 2nd movies

So a bit of context for why Toothless' attachment doesn't work without Hiccup, when Hiccup made it he intended for Toothless to just be able to fly with it naturally and Not need him at all, but when Toothless tries to escape he realises that a dragon needs to be able to manually alter their tail wings when in the air, its effectively like losing a limb. So Hiccup doesn't know how to teach Toothless how to use his new attachment which means he resorts to operating it manually. So it's not like Hiccup is deliberately forcing Toothless to be his transportation, the two of them need eachother

The soundtrack is amazing, the composer is very much looked up to by other big name composers too! You'd be right he is very well known and appreciated! Also that scene where Hiccup approaches toothless tied up with his eye closed then open, was an editing mistake! His eye was supposed to remain closed but it worked so well they kept it! Side note about flying animal tails: the reason Hiccup needs to control toothless' tail is cuz Toothless can't do it himself. Hiccup can't just leave it extended because in order to make turns and literally any flight control he needs to be able to extend or retract and flip his tail fin side to side etc...and Hiccup didn't figure out how to engineer that so Toothless can fly on his own Also I would love if you tackled the series+ other movies

Dreamworks knocked it out of the park with those dragons. Toothless spits out something akin to plasma blast which runs hotter and that’s why its teeth retracts so they don’t take damage; the Gronckle eats rock so its fire is closer to lava as a melting rock-like; the Hideous Zippleback uses gas so the fire is instant and doesn’t last and the Monstrous Nightmare is using a flammable gel substance so its fire comes out liquidy. The team that worked on those films is incredible

I think the thing with hiccup turning toothless into a vehicle was just him not knowing how to engineer a tail that can adjust as toothless turns and drops on its own. The new tail can’t be open always, it has to turn and close slightly for movement.

with the food part at the end, the dragons were *almost* able to support themselves even ekth the big dragon enforcing food tax. Now that it's dead, their food consumption will go way down and they'll probably be able to sustain themselves hunting and fishing.

If you end up liking the trilogy I would love to see your reaction to the shows. Riders and Defenders of Berk have context (1-2 seasons each) for Dragons race to edge (6 seasons) but personally I think Dragons Race to the edge is 10x better and can be watched as a stand alone without the context of Defender and Riders of Berk. All shows take place between movie 1 and 2. And show a lot more cool dragon designs and character development. Defenders and Riders takes place right after movie 1 and shows the transition of the village with Dragons. Hiccup is 15-16 In Dragons race to edge shows the build up to season 2 villain and hiccup is 17-20 and shows how he makes some on the inventions he uses in movie 2 as well
