Chapter 416: Qi VS Harmonic Essence

This was my first time singing publicly since... well, probably since elementary school music class back on Earth. I'd always been the "singing in the shower off-key" type of guy, and apparently that hadn't changed even with a different body and spiritual enhancement.
"Um," Mo Yuhang's voice finally whispered in my mind, clearly trying to be diplomatic. "Divine one, would you perhaps like me to demonstrate the proper technique? It might help you understand the... nuances of the harmonic patterns."
I nodded, grateful for the save. "That would be helpful."
I relaxed my control, allowing Mo Yuhang to resume command of his own body. The transition was smooth; one moment I was in control, the next I was observing from a mental passenger seat as he straightened up and began to sing.
The difference was night and day.
"Let strength flow like mountain streams," he sang, his voice clear and resonant, carrying the melody with natural grace that made my attempt seem even more pathetic in comparison. "Through channels deep and meridians wide, Let bone become as iron beams, And flesh like stone that will not slide."
The harmonic essence responded immediately, flowing through the meridian channels in his body like liquid music. I could see the visible strengthening effect as his muscles became more defined, his posture more solid.
"By harmony's eternal song," he concluded, his voice rising to a perfect crescendo, "Make weak become forever strong."
When the song ended, I could feel his physical capabilities had increased noticeably - probably by about fifty percent across all attributes.
Then, without warning, Mo Yuhang suddenly blurred into motion.
One moment we were standing in the center of the chamber, the next we had appeared beside one of the training dummies. His enhanced speed was remarkable, not quite teleportation, but fast enough that even a Qi Condensation Stage 6 cultivator would struggle to follow.
His fist connected with the dummy's torso in a devastating impact that sent a sharp crack echoing through the chamber.
The dummy actually lifted off its base and flew backward several meters before crashing into the wall.
Mo Yuhang stepped back, breathing slightly heavily but with a shy smile that displayed his obvious satisfaction at the demonstration.
I was genuinely impressed. And also confused.
"Mo Yuhang, if your technique is that polished, why exactly are you considered untalented? There wouldn't even be a word to describe my level of musical ability after what I just attempted."
Mo Yuhang seemed embarrassed by the praise. "Thank you for saying so, divine one, but you don't understand. I've spent literally years training each technique I can perform. Most cultivators my age learned that song in a matter of weeks. I took three years to master it."
He paused, and I could feel the weight of countless failures and small humiliations in his memories.
"I have weak natural resonance with the world's fundamental symphony," he continued. "It's much more difficult for me to manipulate harmonic essence than it is for others. The essence... it doesn't want to listen to me. I have to beg and plead for every small effect, while talented cultivators can simply command it."
"And that's what prevents you from breaking through to the Third Scale?" I asked.
"Yes," Mo Yuhang said, his voice taking on the tone of someone explaining a hopeless situation. "The Third Scale requires forming what we call a Resonance Core. It's... complicated."
"I like complicated," I said with genuine interest. "Explain it to me."
That seemed to be exactly what Mo Yuhang had been hoping to hear. His face practically lit up with enthusiasm as he launched into a detailed explanation.
"The Resonance Core is essentially a spiritual structure within the cultivator's soul that acts as both an amplifier and a focusing lens for harmonic essence," he began. "Think of it like... imagine trying to sing into a vast cathedral versus singing into a perfectly tuned concert hall. The cathedral might be impressive, but the concert hall will make your voice carry further, clearer, and with more power."
I could feel him organizing his thoughts, drawing on years of study and frustrated longing.
"To form the Core, you need to gather massive amounts of harmonic essence, more than most Second Scale cultivators accumulate in months of normal cultivation, and compress it into a stable formation at the center of your spiritual pathways. But it's not just about quantity. The essence has to be layered in precise harmonic intervals, each layer resonating with the ones above and below it."
He paused, and I sensed his frustration building again.
"The problem is that the formation process requires absolute control over harmonic essence flow. You have to guide hundreds of individual streams simultaneously while maintaining perfect pitch relationships between them. For someone like me, with weak natural resonance..." He trailed off with a sigh. "It would be like trying to conduct a full orchestra when you can barely play a single note correctly."
When he finished explaining, there was a sad longing in his eyes. This was clearly something he'd dreamed about for years, but his natural limitations had made it impossible.
"Master," Azure's voice spoke up in my mind, unheard by Mo Yuhang, "there might be a way to help him. If qi acts as a 'king' to harmonic essence's 'subject' in this realm, we could potentially use qi to command the harmonic essence directly. Force it to enter his system and help him advance."
I considered the idea, thinking through the implications. It did seem theoretically possible, but I remembered how wild qi manipulation had gotten during my earlier experiment.
"The control issues could be a problem," I replied silently.
"All breakthroughs carry risks," Azure replied. "But we could start small. See if we can manipulate qi to command harmonic essence to flow into Mo Yuhang and help him reach peak Second Scale before attempting something as complex as Resonance Core formation."
That made sense.
Reaching the peak of any cultivation stage typically had two components: understanding and energy levels.
Mo Yuhang clearly had the theoretical knowledge in spades; his grasp of the cultivation system was probably better than most Fourth Scale practitioners. All he lacked was the raw power to back up that knowledge.
For someone with his naturally weak resonance, accumulating enough harmonic essence to reach peak Second Scale would normally take decades of careful cultivation. But for someone like me, who could manipulate qi directly, it should be much simpler.
I turned my attention back to Mo Yuhang's consciousness.
"Mo Yuhang, I have a proposal for you. I believe I can help you break through to peak Second Scale, and possibly even assist with Resonance Core formation."
His eyes almost bulged out of his sockets as he practically exploded with excitement and disbelief. "Divine one, is such a thing truly possible?"
"There are risks," I warned. "The process would involve me using my power to force harmonic essence into your spiritual channels. If something goes wrong, it could damage your cultivation base or even cripple your ability to advance permanently."
I felt him consider this for exactly three seconds before his determination solidified.
"I accept the risks, divine one. I've spent my entire adult life stagnating at this level. Even if there's only a small chance of success, I'd rather take it than continue living with regret."
His response was exactly what I'd expected. Someone who'd made that desperate speech in the plaza, someone who'd offered himself as a vessel despite having no apparent advantages - that wasn't the kind of person who'd back down from a dangerous opportunity.
"Very well," I said, resuming full control of the body and settling back into the meditation position. "Remain calm and try not to resist what I'm about to do."
I closed my eyes and reached for my qi, but this time with a very different intent. Instead of trying to directly manipulate the harmonic essence, I would use my qi as a command structure; like a general giving orders to willing soldiers.
The process was delicate. I extended threads of qi throughout the chamber, making contact with the ambient harmonic essence that saturated the Harmony Sanctum. Then, rather than forcing the essence to obey, I issued what felt more like polite but firm requests.
Flow into this vessel. Strengthen his meridians. Nourish his cultivation base.
To my amazement, it actually worked.
The harmonic essence began moving toward Mo Yuhang's body in steady streams, drawn by the qi commands but moving according to its own nature. I could feel his spiritual channels opening up as the essence flowed in, his Second Scale cultivation deepening and stabilizing.
But I'd underestimated the volume of energy we were dealing with.
The sudden influx of such massive amounts of harmonic essence was more than Mo Yuhang's spiritual channels could handle comfortably. I felt the vessel's meridians strain under the pressure, and a moment later, I tasted blood as Mo Yuhang's body coughed up crimson droplets.
"Divine one!" Mo Yuhang's mental voice was equal parts ecstatic and concerned. "I can feel it working, my cultivation is advancing rapidly! But are you injured?"
I wiped the blood from our lips with the back of my hand, smiling despite the discomfort. "Don't worry about it. I had a feeling this might happen."
The truth was, rapid cultivation advancement almost always came with some kind of physical cost. The fact that we'd only suffered minor internal injuries was actually better than I'd hoped.
And I also knew how to fix it.
Closing my eyes again, I reached through the spiritual connection linking this manifestation to my true body. The thread that sustained my presence here could carry more than just qi; it could also channel the power of the two suns.
I drew on my blue sun energy, feeling that familiar azure radiance flow through the dimensional link and into my vessel.
Blue sun energy entered Mo Yuhang's body with a warm, healing radiance.
The azure light surrounded us, mending damaged meridians and repairing stress fractures in his spiritual pathways.
"What... what is this power?" Mo Yuhang whispered in awe as the blue energy continued to work.
"Consider it a divine blessing,” I smiled.

Thanks to everyone who told me to not rush through the training arc - you were absolutely right! I completely underestimated how much depth this world-building needed.
Mo Yuhang reaching Peak Second Scale is just the beginning. He's still nowhere near strong enough for Ke Yin to take on Guo Xinyi. But now that we've seen how qi can command harmonic essence in this realm, the real experimentation can begin.
Next chapter, we're diving into whether Ke Yin can leverage his red and blue sun energies here.
Here's a hint: both qi and the two suns' power are classified as 'higher realm' energies, while harmonic essence is 'lower realm.' As the story progresses, Ke Yin will discover what determines these classifications and why it matters so much.
I won't spoil what's coming, but if you enjoy deep dives into magic systems and power interactions, the next few chapters should be right up your alley. We're about to get very experimental with energy manipulation.

Blue sun energy will hopefully make it easier for him “interface” and guide the harmonics, while maybe red sun energy could outright shut it down/silence it? Something disruptive I think. Also, could Ke Yin ask for cultivation techniques? Even if he won’t be able to directly use them, surely the underlying principles will be incredibly useful later down the line when designing new techniques and his own energy system.

The Red and Blue Sun energies are both from a star. Music is something that's made on earth. Maybe it has to do with how celestial the energy is.

I do feel like it would be better for the fight to be in cooperation - mo switching in to simg while ke yin do the rest of the stuff, I feel like it's important for the story to not make ke yin good at singing suddenly without months or years of vocal training

It may be more accurate that both qi and two sun energies are above harmonic essence but may not be equal.

Just brainstorming: Since Ke Yin is an isekai'd character, we can borrow from our Earth's music culture. Red energy is wild and violent, so could work well with marching anthems, powerful classical pieces, heavy metal, rock, or other such strong music to create powerful attacks and other effects. Blue energy would be more like gentle classical, soft pop, etc to create healing, nurturing effects. We have a lot of choice to pick from, and since Ke Yin can't sing worth a damn, maybe he can focus on creating instrumental music through formations emulating synthesizer music. I'd also love to see a collab with Mo Yuhang singing in parts.

Since this is a harmonic realm, I'm gonna go a little musical in this. I see the twin sun energies in terms of genres of music: the blue sun energy as Classical or Opera, and the red sun as Heavy Metal (when you factor in how they're used). Blue Sun could ne used to "fine tune" thigns into precision strikes, where as the red sun can just blow the socks off things if the recipient isn't prepared for it.

I LOVE IN DEPTH SYSTEMS!!! That said.. I can definitely see the blue sun energy empowering the resonance. Blue sun seems to do a lot of “manifestation”, and with its own musical branch, making the manifestation more powerful feels like a shoe-in. Red Sun, I’d be unsurprised to see some kind of discordant melody attack, that could jive. or maybe somehow strengthening or lengthening the effect of the harmonic “body tempering”

Wait the sun energies are incomplete and corrupted, right? Usually something like that would lower their rank, so does that mean the sun world used to be above the cultivation world?

I think every type of energy should be collected in his inner world. after going into detail on this energy it would be a waste to not use it after the tournament ark. Even if it is a lower realm energy having more than just a few types of energy makes sense for the world tree sutra. Maybe he can somehow get the coordinates of the world to assimilate later.

Could he transport the harmonic resonance bath to his main body for a core in his inner world? Or would it being lower realm energy make it not worth it. I guess he could always come back to that world and repossess the guy with his actual soul and then grab the cool plants and some of the magic then. Making part of his garden section have music plants that feed a celestial resonance core that is orbiting with the suns and Star would be pretty cool

OH HECK YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS WE ARE FINALLY HITTING THE DEEP END okay theory’s well if blue and red sun energy are both higher realm energies along side qi we already saw that ke yin can use his qi to order around the harmonic essence but if he tries to directly control it it doesn’t work as well so you need to let the essence do the work itself after giving it a command but what if the sun energies have a slightly different relationship with harmonic essence like red sun energy is like a dictator swinging its iron fist while blue sun is a divine guiding light that shows the best way forward each allows command over lower realm energies but they each have subtle differences in the effect those commands have

Blue and Red Sun energies probably resonate with each other, he can probably use that resonance to empower techniques. Possibly Blue sun energy could give life to songs while red sun energy can directly change something
