Update on Poll Results for Kill Count Movie
🕑 Added 2021-01-24 18:38:09 +0000 UTCHi everybody! If you'll remember, a couple of weeks ago I made a poll asking you which movie you'd like to see on a SHUDDER-SPONSORED Kill Count that will be happening in February. I gave 10 options, some of which I hadn't even seen before, and asked you to vote for any amount of them that you'd like to see covered.
THE RESULTS ARE IN! More than 2,700 of you voted, and the top 3 results (as of right now) were...
- Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) with 530 votes
- Ichi the Killer (2001) with 391 votes
- Tammy and the T-Rex (1994) with 345 votes
There was a significant enough gap between Tammy at #3 and the fourth place option, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which received 283 votes.
HERE'S THE DEAL THOUGH.
I re-watched Behind the Mask to prep myself for covering it, and, I've gotta tell ya, it's just not graphic. Like, at all. Hardly ANY blood in it (except for one pretty cool kill) and the sexuality is negligible and could easily be edited out. Even though it won by a very large margin, I think it'd be a waste of a sponsorship to cover in an uncut Kill Count. So it will not be the February Shudder episode - BUT, since it did win the poll, I PROMISE to cover it this year - hopefully sooner than later, but I don't want to give a specific time frame and then be unable to fulfill that promise. The best I can say is 2021. It'll be good.
SO, next I watched Ichi the Killer, which I had never seen before. Um. Wow. This was one of the most violent movies I've ever seen, with a few specific scenes that were just... yeah, ouch. Now, normally, that'd be the point of a sponsored episode - cover the graphic movies without worrying about YouTube demonetization. BUT, the thing with Ichi is... it's not really a horror movie. Like, at all. It's an extremely violent crime movie - like a much bloodier John Wick. And we all know how I feel about John Wick as a Kill Count movie.
Add in the facts that a lot of the violence is sexual; that the plot is very complicated, with lots of backstabbings and twists and turns; that it's a Japanese film that was heavily influenced by that nation's culture and history at the time; and, it all stacks up to be an episode that I don't really want to do. I would be willing to approach all that stuff - the violence, the complicated plot, the foreign research I'd have to do - if it were more of a horror movie. But it's not. I don't want to cover this and have it used against me when kids leave comments asking for John Wick, you know? So I'm going to also skip this one, I'm sorry - but any huge Takashi Miike fans DO have one option if they want to see this covered on the channel: Email deadmeatpod@gmail.com. Chelsea absolutely LOVED Ichi the Killer, and is a HUGE fan of Audition as well. Since we're more lenient regarding genre when it comes to movies we cover on the Podcast, and since she has more time to do research into stuff like Japanese history (which she already has a small foundation built thanks to the Creepy Kids episode), I wouldn't be surprised to see her wanting to cover it.
Which brings us to Tammy. Oh, Tammy. Tammy is a bad movie. Tammy is a stupid movie. Tammy is arguably more of a sci-fi comedy than a horror movie. But Tammy is the type of shit I love. It's got a ridiculous premise, "what the fuck" scenes, and kills that are surprisingly graphic af. It's short, simple, has a few recognizable actors (a couple of which have been featured on the Kill Count in the past), and is a blast to make jokes about, as proven in the commentary track we did for it a year ago.
Y'all, I'm gonna do Tammy and the T-Rex.
Hope my reasoning makes sense to everyone. I know it was the third place winner in the poll and that it probably only got that many votes because of it's ridiculous name, but hopefully that will similarly bring in the views on YouTube. And besides, that's why I stressed in the poll post that the results were not binding - I've gotta be able to maneuver and make choices that I think are best for the channel and my own sanity (seriously, explaining Ichi in a Kill Count would be hell) while still getting your input. To be honest, I had MOST wanted to cover A Bay of Blood from that list, and that did worse than every other option except for Humanoids.
I plan on covering Bay before my Friday recount episodes, since I think a lot of the Friday movies were inspired by it, and I promise to cover Behind the Mask this year - again, as soon as I'm able to slot it into the schedule (which is already mostly filled out). Not sure about the others (though I'd also wager that Pieces is coming some time this year, hopefully), but thank you for participating in the poll, and I hope the arbitrariness of it wasn't too maddening for ya.
THERE ARE 3 KILL COUNTS COMING OUT BEFORE TAMMY, so don't get confused when you keep seeing episodes that don't feature Denise Richards and a dinosaur. I know I'm supposed to be taking it easy but there are just too many movies that I WANT to cover.
Okay, thanks everyone! Be good people!

You rock James! Your explanation was easy to understand and your dedication to the horror genre as a whole and us as an audience is, as Clarence Williams III and Keith David would say, the shit.
Eric Thornhill
Yeah , Ichi would be a stretch but Tokyo Gore Police that movie is pretty fucking nuts. Give that one a shot.
Mark Lynn
I've sent you a list of horror movies with kills on the Dead Meat Gmail address including Urban Legend trilogy (including 1998 Jamie Blanks slasher) and Prom Night franchise

Can’t wait!
Makes sense
Aaron Ritchie
Aaaah is that what’s going on. I should give it a rewatch then!
Only because for years, none of the gory kills were in the movie. After being restored about a year ago, there's tons and tons of them.

Is Tammy and the T-Rex having a Renaissance? I’ve noticed a lot of other channels I follow have been covering it over the last few months.
Greg Miller
I think I know what I’m doing tonight!
krystina alfonso
You can watch Tammy on Shudder and listen to the commentary track!
Jake
LOL I don't even get why people even voted for Tammy... L O L.
Eric Miller
DMJ. I'd follow you to hell, my dude. Fuckin get it, homey!!
krystina alfonso
Glad you enjoyed it!
krystina alfonso
There's a commentary track on it!
krystina alfonso
You'd be surprised by how many emails we get for it....
Jewels
I guess I missed that it was for a sponsored video. You are correct that Behind the Mask definitely doesn't need a sponsor. I look forward to when you do cover it!
RyLaw
YESSSS im so glad you're doing Tammy and the trex!!! it was the first commentary track I watched and y'all made the movie twice as enjoyable. I can't wait to see the kill count!!!!!
Casper Ty Wolfenbarger
I appreciate the thoughtful response and time you put into this, James! I'm happy with whatever you decide to put out, as I watch your content for your jokes and commentary, not the actual film itself (if I wanted to watch Behind the Mask, I'd just go watch it!). I love how transparent and thoughtful you are about your channel and your fans! Can't wait to see the Tammy kill count, and any before and after that.
Greg Miller
Never seen Tammy and the T. rex so I’m glad that won. Always looking for good horror movies to watch. What are the three kill counts coming out before that tho?
bastardjackyll
You're going to have a lot of fun with Tammy and BTM is like the corniest most overrated slasher ever, everything is good.
Alithria
A shame Ichi won't be covered but totally understandable! Thanks for the update. And great content! PS: Any one ever seen Tetsuo: The Iron Man? Cyberpunk body horror movie? I need good movies to watch!
Realalf
Do people keep asking for John wick? Why?! It's seriously just 76 people getting shot in the head. Would make for an extremely boring KC episode. (as well as not being horror)
Kaleb Rhodes
Yasssss 1. this is reasonable 2. my movie won ahahahaha
Jarrod Clark
All good James! Always look forward for the episodes!
Reade McCardell
Completely, utterly reasonable. Good on you. Looking forward!

I legit JUST watched Tammy because it was on my list for weekly horror movies, and I loved it. I'm more than Excited to see it covered!
OGKrushz
Thanks for the update!

I understand and accept your reasoning. These things happen, however I'm holding you to doing Behind The Mask sometime this year. I love that movie 💜
I remember watching the pg13 vesion of tammy and the t-rex as a kid as a kid, and was wondering why it was on the pol. The I watched the unedited shudder version, and holy shit! I need this kill count. Thanks James!
WildThiccens
You should check out "Splinter" 2008
Jacob Schneider
I too really wanna see a bay of blood covered so I'm excited that its gonna happen soon
krystina alfonso
Y'all should listen to the commentary track for tammy because a certain someone is in it ;)
Rachel Snead
I voted for Ichi because I love it, but totally agree with your reasoning. Thought it was odd to see it on the poll tbh. The only other film I voted for was Bay of Blood, so I'm glad you wanna do that one. It's not a super popular film but it's the perfect kind of movie to cover on the Kill Count. I think a lot of horror fans will be glad to see it on there.
Sin
I was dumb and thought you were polling for Podcast entry, Ichi makes FAR more sense for a kill count. Just finished the movie, it was ☠️🥩 uncensored worthy for sure.
I voted Tammy and I couldn't be happier 👌 👌
Nicole Jackson
I'm excited for Tammy and the 🦖. Can't wait to hear James say "Dinosaurs"!
nash sanadiki
I love kill counts on unfamiliar movies 🎥🙌😍
Mark Gaviglio
I'm cool with this reasoning. I voted Ichi. And I was surprised when I saw this on your poll for the same reasons you said. I love that movie. Like love it. But yeah, it's not horror. So I get it. Please give Henry another chance in another poll though. I love that ending so much. Thanks for all the awesome content.
Brent Pimentel
I love Bay of Blood, even more with its original name "Twitch of the Death Nerve", and think a lack of familiarity led to its low standing in the poll. As one of the first real slashers, it has all the blood and cliches in place for a great episode! Woo hoo!!
Matt Monfils
You should cover Behind the Mask on the podcast!
David Thompson
I love the way that you can hear the exact way he would have spoken these words if it were in a video, can’t wait for the episode
If people get mad about this they are not being good people.
Gavin Reagins
I read this whole thing in James’ voice. Love Tammy too, can’t wait
