May 23 Storm Chase - Heads, Tails or Wild Card?
🕑 Added 2024-05-23 15:57:33 +0000 UTCMorning Chasers,
Storms in the TX Hill Country are consuming tornado parameters along the dryline. To what degree? Not certain. The HRRR appears to be trending toward less storm intensity and coverage along the dry line each run (if I'm seeing it right) while the Nam Nest blows up the dry line with storms. With that, Do you choose heads... The HRRR OK target? Tails, the TX HRRR target or Wild, A burrito somewhere else?
I plan to drive north to the first TX target and have another look at mesoanalysis... time permitting.
YESTERDAY : WE ALL NEED BOUNDARIES
Most everybody was on the first long lived HP supercell. Here's a scan just before going tornado warned. But I had my eyes on another storm 1.5 hours to the west.

An outflow boundary / cold front thingie was firing storms but then undercutting them and robbing them of tornado potential. Do you love the one you're with? Or want what you can't have?
Of the multiple storms initiated yesterday, this one was able to latch on to the boundary after it split and thus produce a very photogenic tornado. Congrats to Mr. Shaw for recognizing this, committing early and being one of the few that caught it.

Good luck today Decision Makers.

I went with Heads starting in Woodward. Bunch of dying turkey necks up there. Started heading south and got suckered by a decent updraft that died off. Thinking it drited into a capped atmosphere as the surface winds, temp, and dewpoint were good to go. Made it down to Sayre in time for that storm to die off only to find myself too far north to get on the amazing tornado down in SW OK. Lots of windsheild time and my camera never made it out of the bag. Not a loss, but a lesson learned.

Absolutely incredible tornado in Oklahoma yesterday. This season won’t stop.

Knew I should’ve slept in the basement spare bedroom. Sirens going off and we’re under Tornado Warning - Douglas Cty (Omaha, NE). Observed tornado near Scribner, NE heading East.

Hoping for a quiet night tonite, but don’t think that’s going to happen. This will make the 3rd overnite Storm in a week! 🫤

Busted, sort of. Headed South of DFW for the wildcard mess, got caught in hail core getting of I35 to get gas. Right after that the difference in the 15Z and 17Z evaporated my target area. Oh well, the hail knocked some rust off for chasing. Right area, bad timing.

Hmmm, Heads could say hello to Mr Ed on the way up, tails find some Crowell/Haskell magic or go into that wildcard mess that is going on right now. Not sure, but need to get my tail moving somewhere.
