I feel like people don't get that liking someone is pretty much the same thing as being friends, you enjoy spending time together, talk, laugh, cry, etc. If you like someone, you'll already find a lot of joy just by being friends, you don't have to put pressure on yourself and expect a romantic relationship right away. Also, always consider the other's feelings, it's sad when someone don't want to be friend with you because they expected more, when you were happy to have a friend.
