Haunterr111
okay so as a Swede, here's how to properly eat Surströmming; Open the can UNDER WATER so that the smell doesnt get out and so that the spraying doesnt happen and also make sure you're very drunk when doing this, cut the fish into smaller bites (also i dont think the skin is supposed to be on while eating) and enjoy!

BARNACLES!
Kim Colleary
Oh poor Dan, felt bad for him this whole episode.
Neon Thrill
This episode was awesome, from the horrified looks on Dan's face to the background screams of the others.
Ashley Stringer
Danny throwing the chair was the highlight of the episode! 🤣🤣🤣
Sierra
horrifying
R0SE
If Arin thinks razor clams look like penises then he should see what a Pacific Geoduck looks like.
8-Bit Cthulhu
Probably worse than the bog of eternal stench lol 🤣
8-Bit Cthulhu
Nothings disgusting when it comes to arin lmao 🤣
Gunderson
Ah, Spring: the glorious time when the crew asks not, "Are we really giving Dan and Arin botulism?" but rather, "How MUCH botulism are we giving Dan and Arin?"

The surstromming bit was one of the funniest power hour moments ever 🤣
Beth
Holy moly, I cannot believe you people opened that indoors 😭😭
PinkFires
I'm actually shocked they opened that and did not immediately hurl, they are stronger men than I.
QiRong
I was eating breakfast.. I thought tinning fish meant making fish out of tin foil 😭
Jonathan Gard
Not indoors man, not indoors! Surströmming goes outside, preferably outside of town!
Jonathan Gard
Word! My grandparents had a surströmmingsskiva indoors once and someone must have spilled a bit, because from that day onward there was always a hint of surströmming in their house. Like the wood beams in the house just absorbed the smell and decided that's what they smell like now.
Jonathan Gard
It's not popular per se, and it's ABSOLUTELY an acquired taste, but the event of eating it is a really old and widespread tradition. You usually know someone each summer who invites friends and family to a 'surströmmingsskiva', but nowadays it's mostly old people and hipsters that still appreciate it.
Ankaration
I usually eat breakfast and watch 10MPH, this one I just could not 😅 when it sprayed Dan 🤢
Annabelle
What no carbuncles to eat themselves?
Crescent Minor
Struggling to identify the feelings in the 'baby eel' face ...

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm watching the beginning of a fandom schism ... Flag on the play! I like a food episode like the Mountain Dew: sane(r) number of samples, space for flavour discussion. I don't like food episodes like the Kit Kat, that end in bewildered tears and flavours going unrecognized because even the Candy Boy, the One Who Has Tried It has dead tastebuds and regret.
Crescent Minor
Typoing them as 'good' episodes is very funny, and I agree. This fish episode is the exception that proves the rule, because the one joke of the food episodes (boys in food pain) seems to me like the only thing they could expect for a series of gross tinned fishes (Swedes in the comments are chiding their doomed prep of the big bad one; they couldn't have hoped to enjoy this). Most of the time, they're talking about a series of snack foods that it could be really interesting to discuss. Frankly, this season also had the Mountain Dew episode that kind of was that, right? Would not that episode have been a waste if it was about rapidly gulping three times the number of flavours until they're crying and can't taste anything? They danced up to the line of how many and gave the boys a hangover, but they still were able to talk about what they were drinking.
Kal
this might be my favorite episode ever

this one was… a little rough for me
thegrinkler
I feel like I shouldn't be as amazed as I am that Dan threw a chair across the room because of a horrific stench
Buggy
Also, working at a shellfish processing plant, it often smells like what I'd describe as "a three month dead beached whale's barnacle encrusted asshole in the August summer heat" and I'm wondering how similar surstromming smells to my jobsite rn
bassheartstrings
Dan went through every emotion this episode
Purple Cool Cat
I love these food episodes, genuinely so funny
schwartzpedro@gmail.com
Im kinda into a few of these tbh Maybe its an ashkenazi thing, maybe its maybeline?
Buggy
I may be in the minority here but I'm as sick of food episodes as they are of eating the food at the end of any given food episode. I'm really hopeful for episodes next season not having so many food episodes.
Julia Perlkvist
It's like... relatively prevalent. You wouldn't just have it for a random Tuesday dinner though, it's more of a thing you have like once in the summer when the whole family gets together, and then there will be plenty of other food options so those who don't want to eat it can just have something else (but obviously we will all smell it, even if precautions are taken to reduce it lol)
Silent Zee
I won't be the first to say it, and I won't be the last. This is also only to the best of my knowledge. Surstömming is meant to be used in extremely small amounts as an addition to a dish, for a hint of flavor, not eaten out the can like peaches. But then you wouldn't get the views...
Taz Jones
haha I worked with a Japanese woman a few years ago and she legit brought in almost a full fish (cooked the night before) for her lunch. Our break room was reeeaaallly small, like it was a small kitchen with a table to eat at and a couple of lockers to the side, and boy... once it started to heat up in the microwave it was real fishy. Some of the team had to leave the room
Cookt
Yeah, he's gay and a misogynist.
Taz Jones
Is it a popular thing to eat in Sweden, or is it more of an acquired taste?
Taz Jones
Legit same
Crescent Minor
That was a very supportive way to smack a guy with towels.
Crescent Minor
If leaving it on the sill to air out the excess flavour is part of how this is prepared, that helps make another comment I read about everyone on the block being able to smell this every time someone is eating it make more sense.
Crescent Minor
Did the chihuahua just HIDE from a fish smell for being too bad?
Shaun Rutherford
Is this what people in the break room feel like when I bring canned fish? Sorry, not sorry.
Sarahmonster
NOPE.
Serial Dad Kisser
Daddys!
Ari Wolf
I already know I’m not gonna have a great time watching this ;-;
Julia Perlkvist
Surströmming really is HORRIFIC! I'm Swedish and let me tell you, you can smell when someone down the street is having it. My parents had it at home for midsummer once and the smell lingered in the house for about three days after. It's on a whole different level.
Rachel Fischer
I dont know what i laughed at harder. Arin trying to get that out of his mouth or Dan *BAP BAP*ing him with the paper towels. Lololol
FurryBastard27
Yeah it’s opened underwater to keep fish juice from spraying everywhere, gutted, and then wrapped in flatbread with potatoes and onions. Tbh I feel like most “gross foods” are just prepared wrong. It’s like eating a raw potato.
Kai Scott
this ep killed me
Cookt
Yeah, isn't it supposed to be opened underwater first as well? This feels kind of similar to when people try Vegemite by eating a spoonful instead of putting a thin layer on toast with butter or just chomping on a century egg instead of mixing it into a bowl of rice. There's a sort of process. A ritual even.
Cookt
The fucking gasp I gusped when it EXPLODED at Dan. omfg
Maphisto_2028
"A knife of scent " is a line I never thought would be so accurate
Victor Blas
That last one doe, DEATH
Mia
lmao I looked it up to find out why (so it doesn't spray on you like it did Dan) and it also said it's eaten outside, can't imagine why 😂
Snazzypumpkin
my condolences to the clean up crew :(
Olof Rönn
I love how Surströmming is so wretched the can actually spits at Dan when Arin opens it. Even as a Swede, I’ve never actually smelt it but the smell is by all accounts indescribable.
FurryBastard27
As a Swede I feel I should clarify that surströmming is Not opened inside and is usually left to air out before eating (with other stuff). Eating it fresh out of the can is actually insane.
Anton Lundh
Was not expecting to see a f**k face reference here xD
Matthew Stassen
The last one is traditionally opened under water.
