I'm proud of helping get Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of (Christmas) to no. 1, and preventing the X Factor winner of that year with their bland, manufactured pop from getting a no. 1. The BBC asked them to perform the song before the watershed, but not to swear. R.A.T.M. performed the song, but kept the original lyrics "F**k you, I won't do what you tell me", and the BBC had to rapidly cut away 😂

Late to the party but I skipped Blobby it's traumatic, the house might have been Pauls house as I'm sure he and Linda had a retreat on mull of kintyre

The point about the Benny Hill number one and similar is not the strangeness but the novelty value

I guess in the 90's our Mr. Blobby would have been Barney the dinosaur but he was universally hated by anyone over 10 years old

Benny Hill's "Ernie" wasn't strange to us at all! We all loved his comedy shows on TV at that time - and this was just an extension of his typical humour - playing different character roles and making comedy songs like this - usually with a hint of slightly risqe smuttiness which was all just part of his style of humour! Our whole family loved this song - because everybody loved Benny Hill! You really ought to check out some of his sketch shows from the 1970s.

Mull of Kintyre.... brought back so many memories. My dad, 26 yrs in the army, was really into bagpipes and marching bands. He loved that song. I think he would have shot Mr Bobby!!

I was a huge Noel Edmands fan when he was a radio 1 DJ. He transferred to TV with the late, late breakfast show on Saturday evenings. I naturally watched it. But then he started doing "Candid Camera" type items. Mr Bobby made his entrance in that! I stopped watching after one episode! Mull of Kintyre sent my dad into orbit! He was of Scottish decent and he got very emotional. Bless him! Also catch "Amazing Grace" by Royal Scots Dragoon Band (I think!) It's fantastic, not a dry eye in the house! As for Ernie: Move on!
