ECLIPSE CHASE 2024
🕑 Added 2024-04-07 16:23:19 +0000 UTCIt's time for the big celestial event. In the ensemble map above we can infer there will be a lot of cloud foiling and a lot of lucky sungazers. It is currently not looking good for most of Texas or New York. You Mainiacs are looking great. Arkansas through Indiana appears to be pretty good, but not a guarantee...

Below is the latest HRRR cloud cover forecast for my home state D:

The NAM is ushering in a much more comforting scenario...

In conclusion, the more nimble you are, the more you'll up your chances of seeing this thing. If you haven't seen a total eclipse, it is worth fighting for. I'll be departing Houston at 5AM with my Mother and Nat targeting SE Oklahoma / SW Arkansas, traffic allowing.
PREPARATION
To avoid wasting time in potential lines, we are bringing sandwiches, snacks and water. Top off the gas tank when you can. in 2017 we experienced zero traffic, but others had stories of log jam hell, so mentally prepare patience for that. Crappy roach motels were available for $300-$600.
After the Eclipse, we will be chasing storms...

Many of us are going to have wonderful stories, others not so much. Remember, when it's good it's fun, when its bad it's funny. Looking forward to hear everyone's stories of success and failure. Let's use this thread for tips and tactics. Good luck Soul Chasers!

tomorrow 4/10: "Numerous to widespread severe thunderstorms are probable beginning Wednesday morning across parts of the central Gulf Coast States. These will include potential for both many tornadoes, some of which should be strong (EF2-EF3 caliber), and widespread damaging wind swaths with embedded significant gusts"

Had excellent weather in Omaha, NE. Only an occasional wispy cloud, but lots of wind made the 58F temp felt a lot cooler. Although we were in the 90% totality zone, it was so eerie looking outside. The arc of the crescent and the color was just gorgeous. Hope everyone had a great adventure if you were traveling.

Yay!! Glad you got see some of it and the clouds cooperated a little bit.

That is awesome!! Always go with your gut! Its worked well for me these 61 years on this planet.
Brenda
How exciting!! We got to about 90% of totality according to local meteorologists. Did you notice any strange behavior with the critters?
Brenda
That's how I was back in 2017! It was amazing! Glad to got to see it.

There was a lot of doom and gloom last night from every one forecasting cloud cover so I decided not to go and went to bed sad. Something in me made me wake up early and check the could cover my self. I saw a really tempting possibility west of Waco and jumped on it. i raced from college station to get as far northwest as i could and about 10 minutes before totality i hit a break of clouds just northwest of temple. Perfect viewing, just me and the dusty dirt roads of Texas.

Had the scope setup by noon, still cloudy. Ready to go when the first bit of moon started to show and then the clouds took their queue to wait. Other than some high clouds at totality (I thought of Hank and kept shooting just to see how they looked) it was just amazing. Hard to visit with friends and family, run the telescope and seperate camera, take note of what was going on with the critters and just soak it all in but well worth it.

Just wow, Iβm speechless

Well. Had a great view for the beginning half way across the sun. Then huge cloud cover and thick (right now) came in. Saw a moment of crescent in between light clouds. Way cool experience and had my solar glasses on! In 2017 I got cool crescent shadows because there was no cloud cover. I'm in SE PA
