Sarah Lin

Fixed, thanks!

Ryan Roberts

“It was all nicely in hand, much the same as the other battles. The instinct that saved Theo wasn't anything he could pin down, just an flickering impression from all the combat experience in his past. Theo dropped himself backward with a perpendicular field as rapidly as he possibly could without knowing why.“ “an flickering” should be “a flickering”

Sarah Lin

Fixed on my end, thank you!

D

There is a small typo in this line -"There hadn't seen the slightest sign of her since the Chasm and yet she occupied more of his mind than she ever had as an annoying little imp. If he'd had more time.." In my head I read it as "They hadn't seen the.." or as "There hadn't been the...".

Sarah Lin

Haha, don't make too much of it, but don't make nothing of it.

Brandon C Yee

Meant to make this comment earlier but... Saan Fraskin = SF = San Francisco Norro Yorthin = NY = New York My brain made this connection and won't let go of it

Sarah Lin

You won't be seeing Javes just yet, but look forward to some surprise appearances from minor characters throughout this series. ^-^

Nathan Rice

I wonder if we'll get a reappearance from Javes. Now that all of Fithe is at war, or more at war, I bet his home region is involved too.

Corwin

Technically possible the Earth does that with its orbital spin and the creation of its electrical and magnetic field. Lol its a weak thing on earth but we could use multiple fields in a soulhome. But torsion bolt with a magnet room over that and there is a huge current of electricity created. But electricity / lightning bolts kind of the same thing Hot and cold air mixing with pressure would give you tornadoes though Mixing hot air and water droplets + cold air and ice crystals does give us lightning but not sure how that would work with Theo's design. Definitely more in line with Fiyu

Ah, I thought you were saying he would generate electricity directly from gravitational fields. Putting a magnetic sublime material in the spinning room sounds pretty cool and would work!! I guess he could also use gravity fields to knock cold/hot air and water around to generate lightning strikes.

Corwin

Now if you want to say "Well gravity doesn't really create electricity. And that black holes only have a charge because of things falling into them. And this is all highly subjective on view points." I would certainly agree with you. But all we have to do is look at Fiyu lightning bolt attack to see that this was her view that shaped her technique. But Sarah did mention in Archcrafter that Fiyu bracers were a better fit for Theo. Which one could segway into Theo linking gravity into making electricity. Now would Theo get an lighting attack as a Ruler. Not at first. It would take him being able to have his cantea move spherically which would give him this ability. With needing him to having his mass chamber fully functional and having his singularity move up to his Ruler floor. And it would require Theo to always be throwing things into his singularity to keep it charged.

Corwin

Technically everything requires a magnet to generate electricity. That humans make. If there are aliens out there sadly I don't know there technology to say anything about it. But yeah most gravity batteries use mass to produce it. Most will use the kinetic energy to rotate the magnet to give us electricity. Blackholes generate a charge when something drops in them. Which Theo technically creates. Theo's designed blueprint is a sphere rotation with his cantea though. Giving us rotation. Which would give us spin. Allowing mass to move generate the motion/spin to give us electricity. Technically a blackhole/singularity which Theo can create can also have an electric charge. It can also radiate heat. But it is basically a gravity sink. Which sucks in everything allowing for the manipulation of mass and light. https://www.quantamagazine.org/black-hole-paradoxes-reveal-a-fundamental-link-between-energy-and-order-20200528/ So would Theo need a magnet to do it? Well I would say no. But I am also not writing the book so my opinion doesn't matter that much.

Sarah Lin

Thank you very much! I hope you continue to enjoy my work. ^-^ In case it helps, the only way to get a line break in the comments here is Shift+Enter.

I love your work, Sarah! Thank you for the time and effort you've given us.

Hi Corwin! I think you've misunderstood the gravity batteries! Gravity cannot generate electricity on it's own. Those gravity batteries look like they're making use of induction. So you'd spin a magnet on a rotor and induce a voltage on the metal (stator) that surrounds the rotor. I'm guessing they call them gravity batteries because they're using weighted objects to generate the force that spins the rotor. Theo would need some extra equipment to generate the electricity! I only base these statement on what I saw in the youtube video, the article is behind a paywall :(

Corwin

That's fine and understandable. Gravity wasn't Theo's first choice. So some things are bound to be missing. Plus just because it's possible doesn't mean that it's workable with sublime materials. The electrical current I figured he might know just because they have discussed it forever. One of those things about sustainable energy like solar power. Shockwaves I thought might be in the works since gravity plays a huge part in sonic booms. Gravity for air bubbles in water I admit is weird. But figured it couldn't hurt to try with the trenchgem mentioned and used Forgot the magnetic power for enhancing gravity. More theory than law. But I like it 😆 🤣 😂 https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn2814-earths-magnetic-field-boosts-gravity/

Corwin

This one discusses what happens with different metals and other materials on gravity's effect. https://www.nature.com/articles/npjmgrav20153 Technically you could do time as well. But gravity effect on time. http://thescienceexplorer.com/universe/how-gravity-changes-time-effect-known-gravitational-time-dilation Gravity is weird and cool. On the effects and possibilities as far as I am concerned.

Sarah Lin

Thanks! I can't make any promises until I've read everything, but I'll take these into consideration.

Corwin

For gravity shockwaves this isn't too bad. Just a brief overview of a paper. Lol it gets in the weeds. But it explains how blackholes can cause gravitional shockwaves. And national geographic does have an article as well https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0550321385905255 https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/gravitational-waves Gravity batteries. The first is an article but the YouTube video is an actual demo of how it works https://www.science.org/content/article/gravity-based-batteries-try-beat-their-chemical-cousins-winches-weights-and-mine-shafts https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qH9-kscAqXw

Sarah Lin

Expect some more exploration of the water side of Fithe in the sixth book, though not quite like that. I have some fun technique ideas based on elements of real gravity... but the connection to electricity is a new one to me. Do you have any kind of link where I could read up more on this? I'm always open to new ideas for clever uses of gravity.

Corwin

So I am curious about a few of potential Theo's abilities and sublime materials. Since gravity can make air pockets in water. Will we be seeing Theo making an exploration of more Trenchgems while he is out helping in the war effort? Since most of what you have said about having Theo use anti-mass for deflection and working on it becoming more powerful. Will Mass also be used to give Theo another offensive ability like shooting electrical bolts at people? It's one of the weird abilities of gravity I know. But gravity can create electricity. Will we see Theo make his own shockwaves? It's a combination of antimass and mass. With what you currently have them working as I believe.

Sarah Lin

Any site you use normally is great! Everything helps, and I don't need people to go too far out of their way. I appreciate your enthusiasm. ^-^ But if you're looking to help, ratings are most helpful on Amazon, Audible, and Goodreads. If you use social media appropriate for reviews or recommendations, that always helps. Long reviews are good, but quick ratings and/or short reviews help almost as much. Or if someone is looking for something different, hardly anyone reviews series pages, so you could be one of the first: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P824NFN

Kyle Boyd

Where are the best places to leave reviews/ratings for you? love the series and happy to help however i can

Jamarr

Gotcha, that definitely clear it up.

Sarah Lin

Yeah, I see how that reads ambiguously. The sentence now reads as follows: "Perhaps the silver lining to the fact that he had only been able to find enough sublime materials to build three of the nine rooms he wanted on his third floor was that he could simply climb into the empty spaces."

Corwin

Maybe if he was thinking authority would do it? That's what made me think of an elevator really. Either dumbwaiter or sublime elevator. The dumbwaiter is simple though. Sublime elevator Sarah said was not simple for soulhomes

Jamarr

" It was fine for now, but he was gambling on his gravity being able to carry him between floors at later tiers, because using exterior ladders was becoming increasingly inconvenient. That was perhaps the only upside to the fact that he had only been able to find enough sublime materials to build three of the nine rooms he wanted on his third floor." I'm not seeing the "upside". He first complains about the tedium of using his ladders to travel around his soulhome and then feels frustrated by his lack of progress on his third floor. Both are negative emotions, I'm not seeing any positives.

Corwin

Well hopefully our intrepid adventurers get something better than stairs for their homes. A floating plant to carry Nauda up her floors would definitely be interesting.

Sarah Lin

Yeah, simple physical constructs are always easier within soulhomes. That said, some worlds have fantastical elements (like floating plants) as common items, so you do see some fantastical construction.

Corwin

Lol thats fine. The best part is finding out the original idea and comparing. From Ricky's idea to your full fledged story

Corwin

So making a soulhome old fashioned elevator would be easier since it's based off of mass, pulleys, winches and cables than?

Sarah Lin

It's possible in theory, but wouldn't be easy. Sublime materials tend to be more inclined toward soulhome usage or physical usage, rarely doing both. So you could create a levitating elevator, but it would require rarer materials than used in the common sleighs and chariots.

Sarah Lin

Ricky: Yes, your suggestion came at a great time! Others have gotten their materials mentioned, but yours connected with what I was planning surprisingly well. Corwin: You're going to have to wait to find out. I was inspired by Ricky's suggestion, but it won't take exactly the same form because of how it relates to the plot.

Corwin

I was rereading the chapters and Theo mentioned using a ladder and was hopeful in his gravity fields to move up and down his soulhome. So I am wondering if that was craftable. The idea would be crafting either a stone or metal that would move up and down similar to an elevator. The sleds were capable of hovering. So it appears that there is a possibility. Probably want a few of them in your house in different spots with a way to set a break. Since you don't want to run out of cantea and have them fall and break

Corwin

Okay. Explain more about it. Kind of curious on what it has for properties. Nauda unfortunately hasn't learned much yet. Other than it bonds to everything and its always found next to battles

Ricky Kukowski

That Fungi was my suggestion!!! so happy to see it. can't wait to see someone utilizing it.

Sarah Lin

Answers to almost all of those questions this book!

Matt Venzke

Thank you for the chapters! Even if there are a few gap weeks to catch up, it's good to get a chance to read again. Poor Nauda, though. I wonder if this will turn her back towards Theo, I bet he can help her more? Or maybe the bondsfungus will be what she really needs? I also wonder how long before Relative Guchiro arrives and how Theo will deal with those misunderstandings as well as who is sabotaging them. Who even knew and how?

Sarah Lin

When I posted there was a negative review first, but it seems that has changed now that more people look a look at the page. I want to give the book its best chance of success that it can have, but you're right, it shouldn't matter in the end. Thanks for your support!

Gray Bruer

If it's any comfort I had to literally search to find the negative reviews, so they aren't in peoples faces at least. It's unfortunate that they're there at all but there are always going to be dumb people writing dumb reviews. Even if people do end up reading some of those reviews I think you just need to trust in your readership to see through them. If I see a person ragging on a book for a particularly stupid reason (I remember reading a review for another book that basically complained that the antagonist wasn't two-dimensional) I may actually take that as a point in the books favour.

Sarah Lin

I appreciate your support in what I'm going for. Reviews like that don't get too far under my skin personally, but I dislike the idea of people who might truly enjoy TWC not reading it because they were misled. As for improving each book... I don't know if I can maintain that over a long series, but I'll do my best. ^-^ I have a lot planned for this story that I hope will feel more satisfying for being built up first!

Sarah Lin

Huh, I don't see it either, and I'm viewing it via consistent methods. I'm not sure what to think of that. In any case, having a better front page of reviews can't hurt.

Sarah Lin

Every review helps, thanks! (Ratings too, for those with less time.)

Josiah

I feel that the negative reviews on the first book shouldn’t be taken too seriously. If they wanted some Mary Sue protagonist they can just read any of the other dozens of progression fantasies and litrpgs. The first book starts off slow, but I think it’s pretty amazing that every single book is better than the one before it. Usually the trend goes the opposite way. Starting slow was a good call from a plot perspective IMO. As an unimportant side note, could Theo have just used his gravity sense to see a dense rock appear below him and avoid the rock spire by the Authority. Using the cliche “battle instincts” omniscience just seems like a copout especially when his gravity sense might be able to see it coming anyway. It doesn’t really matter for the story, but I always notice when stories just go “somehow they didn’t die” and it feels cheap and unnecessary. Anyway great start to the book!

Josiah

Beyond leaving a review, I also think it would be helpful to mark the top 5 star reviews as helpful so the first review people see isn’t a negative one.

Brandon C Yee

I will leave a review once I start listening to it (otherwise I would mark it 5-stars now) and have made it a recommendation to a few others to use their credit on.

Desertopa

I saw the top negative review when I got this update on mobile, but now that I'm back and actually logged into my account, I can't seem to find it anymore. There are a few disappointed readers in there still if I scroll down the reviews far enough, but it seems like they're no longer occupying any of the top spots. I don't know whether that's due to more votes coming in, or something else, but hopefully it bodes well for the audiobook's performance?

Jeff Kabat

Just left a review. I really enjoyed the book and the fact that the main character isn't some bright eyed, naive, teenage boy with unrealistic expectations of the world.

Glaurung

Feels like a good start

Sarah Lin

In a sense every reader's experience is true for them, but I do feel like some of them misrepresent how most readers would find the book, and I don't like to think of people who might enjoy my work turning away. There are mismatches in expectations that are a common hurdle for what I want to write, but I'll keep forward and hopefully find the audience that finds the same things satisfying. ^-^

CommodoreCaptain

I get frustrated reading reviews of your work where the reviewer seems to go out of their way to misrepresent your writing. It seems that a subset of cultivation fantasy fans think the height of writing is a main character who wins every battle with ease and can immediately surpass any task out in front of them. Your books are great and you are a talented writer. Please try not to let bad faith reviewers get you down.

Alexander Dupree

WOOHOO NEW CHAPTERS THANKS SARAH

Corwin

I think the bondfungi will be what she uses to fix her soulhome. But hopefully she expands her base and brings her tower into her soulhome instead of having them separate

Mountainking

I wonder if Nauda will grow her soul home with fungi and plants

Sarah Lin

I want Theo's gravitational abilities to ascend gradually, and since light is far more difficult for gravity to affect than matter, he won't be able to manage it in the near future. But eventually these abilities will become extremely flexible.

Sarah Lin

No worries about the timing, but thanks for the review!

Sarah Lin

I will definitely keep going for the sake of everyone like you who has enjoyed this series! Thanks for your encouragement. ^-^

Sarah Lin

I feel obligated to consider all criticism, so I always end up reading everything unless my schedule is too busy. I like to think I'm reasonably good at taking everything soberly, but sadly I'm only human. I appreciate your support!

Corwin

Will Theo work on a concealment technique? Bending light to hide and conceal himself. I think it would work nicely right above his torsion technique. Since one is an technique for twisting gravity. And the other is twisting/bending light. Maybe not ideal. But for a man looking to hide from enemies or hide on a battlefield it would be perfect. And since most don't have a good concept or grasp of gravity it would be probably harder for people to find him. And just wondering is it possible for Theo to bend light and concentrate it like a magnifying glass to burn or heal?

Andrew Goudie

I've left a review, I should have sooner, hopefully if everyone here who's picked it up leaves a quick review saying they enjoyed it etc then it'll reflect the quality of your work more accurate

Corwin

I loved the audio book. It was perfect for wrapping presents. Sorry that some of the reviews didn't match what I thought was a good book and a good narration. But I did read some of the reviews. Only 2 bad ones with a ton of good ones. But to be sappy I decided to add to my post a wee bit 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 Some roses to brighten up your day. For a wonderful lady and author. Enjoy your holidays you earned a spectacular new year

Jacob Platt

There are probably people who can read online reviews of their work without going crazy, but not many of them. I'm glad and excited to see the story continuing and based on the reviews I'm in the vast majority.
