Covers are gorgeous

ART - Robocat is talented! - with tweaks the images could be good character fits for your stories. For Wakespire THEO - his facial expression is what? ... grumpy, vengeful, in pain? ... I'm not sure - it's the tilt of his mouth. In Soul home this would be a good facial expression for him. In this book however he's a part of a team that he supports, protects, works with. If anything Theo is determined - give him a determined mouth. For NAUDA - in the Soulhome picture Fiyu and Theo are good character matches. Nauda's image doesn't work at all - she looks like a flirty teenager lounging on a bed. Nauda is older (physically at least) than Fiyu and Theos new 2nd body. She's been a teacher and trainer. She's from the dark side of her world and has struggled every step to find her place - she craves community, respect, and belonging. She's experienced and moved through tremendous challenges. Her image needs to embody her character.

No worries about criticism, I welcome it! That said, I don't know how well the rest of the book will make you happy. Like Fiyu, Guchiro is slow to warm up to anyone. You're correct that he has big plans, and he'll get one POV later in the book, but he's intentionally holding back. It will take longer for him to be a major player with the cast.

Hey SL, I love this story and am always excited to read another chapter, thanks for all the hard work you put into crafting the worlds of the Nine. That being said, I feel bummed over how Guchiro has been slotted into the main group dynamic. He's clearly an important figure within the storyline, and his conversations and thoughts surrounding Fiyu in regards to his future plans lead me to believe he's working towards goals similar in scope/direction to Theo's and Senka's. Despite this, I feel that the lack of a few things in regards to Guchiro leaves a lot to be desired in the now; he doesn't engage in dialogue with the core group a lot outside of mentoring Fiyu and consequently doesn't feel like he's forming actual connections which makes him feel like a plot device in the now, we don't get any internal dialogue or conversation from him addressing obvious connections, like between him and Theo, or points of interest like the oddity that is Senka. Maybe I'm wrong in assuming he's more knowledgable of important plot points and world lore than he lets on, but he feels like someone who could easily broaden our understanding of the deeper issues and lore of the world and just doesn't. Obviously you could be waiting to address that later, Guchiro himself has made it clear he's so focused on getting Fiyu to Authority for greater reasons than just wanting her to be self-reliant and he hopes to include her in his grand plans. But that doesn't deter from the fact that it feels like he's been reduced to a plot device, currently, which hurts when I personally had such high expectations for his immediate impact on the story. Love your work, I don't want to come off as rude, just want to give my small take in as healthy a form as possible. Wish you all the best!

Nothing malicious there... I just thought the sentence sounded comically nonsensical. I'm assuming that in 'when he pushed on them', 'them' designates the handles... of which the sentence starts by stating there were none. So how could he push on something that's not there? 'There were no handles and the door didn't budge when he pushed on it' would make more sense, imho.

Accursed

The new art looks great and will help unify the series

Sarah Lin

Haha, I could rephrase to make that reading impossible, but I'm not sure if this is just malicious interpretation. =P

Nandan

"There were no handles and they didn't budge when he pushed on them." Well, nonexistent handles never budge, it's a matter of principle!

Sarah Lin

Hello! Thanks for joining us, and I hope you'll enjoy the upcoming chapters. ^-^ You'll have to wait a little while for those answers, but Theo will develop some interesting plans for his next floors, and the basements will indeed be among the more distinct elements.

Fleetpanda

Just caught up and I love the series! I wonder how Theo will develop his next three floors. My main guess is that he'll have a body and an ethereal with something in the middle. Also looking forward to his basement! Hope they each do something unique with their basements.

Great new covers! Worth the change. Way better than most of the other covers that I have seen recently/generally. Reminds me of Battlechasers which is a good thing.

Theo does actually use a physical weapon in Soulhome: the spear armament that Navim crafts for him. He loses it early in book two, but it wouldn't be out of place for the book one cover. I think the problem is more that Theo doesn't see himself as an armament user and the spear is a temporary crutch, so it might not be fitting for the character in that regard.

I'm evidence that covers do help gather readers, so I totally get it! Just wanted to speak up in defense of the old ones :) Weirkey usage thoughts: From a meta perspective, we've learned most of our soulcrafting techniques from Theo's work up to this point. I think Fiyu's corporeal floor was the only big concept that Theo wasn't actively engaged with. Theo already knew how to build a soulhome in the first books, but we still saw his process as he worked through things again. However, as the crew starts picking different monuments to work on, I imagine we'll be learning through non-Theo experiences more, so that pattern was never going to last forever. Overall, it's just as handwave-y now as it was before, so it's no worse off. It's a little of a meta-surprise, but the paradigm is changing.

Sarah Lin

I'm glad the previous covers were enjoyed by some! That said, I do view covers as a method to gather readers, so I should perhaps follow the model of more successful books. Agree on repetition of phrases in Chapter 20. Prose-level comments are always welcome! While soul translation does usually follow a convention for names, I don't want to obey it 100% of the time because I think it will be restrictive. No comment on lore spoilers. Authority-tier stone takes longer to shape into bricks. Integrating centerpieces isn't slower unless the materials themselves require more time to find or craft. You make a good point about information on weirkey transit. I wanted to brush past it because Theo already knows and then get into details later when we see Fiyu and Nauda learn, but perhaps that feels too ambiguous for now?

5HourLethargy

My two cents on the covers: Not a huge fan. They're awesome as fanart, but I feel like they're much more generic prog fantasy covers than the general consensus seems to. That might help sales so it's not necessarily a bad thing! Bondsfungi's cover is what inspired me to start the series so I'm a little biased towards the old style(s). As for the chapters, I apologize in advance but they were interesting and inspired a lot of comments/questions. Thanks for the *juicy* chapters! The first two paragraphs of Chapter 20 don't read great together imo. Finding a way to not repeat "strongest lineage(s)" could improve the flow, or just don't mention the other Stronghold to keep the "subject" focused on Isorales and family. IDK, something felt off in paragraph 2. Are dragons canon in Nine Worlds lore? Otherwise, "mulch of dragons" a strange name for the reward. It also breaks the "wordword" naming scheme. Should it be "dragonmulch" instead? Yay non-Theo soulcrafting! What are Nauda's three techniques again? Binding, nullification, and warding? I think she already has three armaments: her staff, her belt, and her glove, so that might provide nice symmetry? But she's already dedicated a floor to staves. Hmm. > For both of them, a month wasn't anywhere near enough, so it couldn't be enough for Nauda, either. I'm not sure what this sentence is trying to communicate. Enough what? Time to soulcraft? Time to recover? *chapter 21* Authority crafting: Do Authorities need to find Authority level stone to build their rooms and is it the act of shaping higher tier stone that slows down the process, or is it the act of shaping lower tier stone takes longer to make it worthy of the Authority floor? Does it take longer to integrate centerpieces to rooms as well, or is it just forming infrastructure pieces that takes longer? Probably RAFO. > Many of the princes might be actively biased against him, but Ractifus Terefilia seemed neutral. Theo wished he could prove the old man wrong, but that would take time. Heh, this could be read like Theo wants to prove that Ractifus should have disliked him like all the rest. From this chapter in particular, it's not clear why Theo's other techniques get huge boosts from better cantae but the singularity doesn't. It makes sense from a powerscaling perspective (it's already super strong) but not clear from a magic system perspective (three times the space and having three whole floors dedicated to a techinique seems like it'd get *more* of a benefit from Theo being generally stronger) > "Oh, you're gonna lose that hand," Senka said. "It's infected. You'd better cut it off now." And so begins the rise of Hookhand Theo. :senkatroll: > Theo had to wipe the grin off his face when they emerged above the clouds, even though he assumed the Guchiro had already felt it. I know authors don't need to spell everything out, but I'm not sure why Theo is smiling here. Because weirkey traveling is still novel? Because Guchiro agreed to help out so easily? Because he wants to see if Guchiro's senses can pierce the spire into the Archive? Feel free to not answer if this is an exercise to the reader XD The Archive seems fun. I can't *imagine* why anyone would call a non-Euclidean maze a place of misery ^_^ Re Weirkey transit: I still don't have a great sense of how it all works. Does it cost cantae to activate? How does a traveler chose their destination? Does it work within places that are slightly outside of the 9 Worlds, like the Chasm and now the Archive? Having apologized in advance, now I apologize in post. Cheers for all the thought and work you've put into the world and magic system!

I think new covers would be the best and these or otherwise. I think the style is great though I’m not entirely sure what they would make people expect. Likely nothing a good synopsis couldn’t fix. Focusing on these as a reader rather than abstract marketing point of view the first cover looks great. Wakespire looks a little too edgy imo and we left that Theo behind lol. But for both my main issue is his hands. I know it’s harder since Theo doesn’t use a physical weapon, but it feels like he needs something in Soulhome. Maybe his singularity, though that could work either way with the whole sun debacle, but something. No clue for archcrafter but maybe the material for Bondsfungi and Bloodcrete. Looking forward too it either way, marketing seems like the hardest part of self publishing so good luck.

I love the art. The current covers are fine, but don't really sell the story as anything specific, while these ones absolutely give the right vibe - kinda anime, but with a more painterly style. Chef's kiss, I love them

I agree that Nauda's pose looks a little anime in a way that doesn't fit her personality. Her facial expression is a good fit, but her pose comes across as too cutesy. That said, as far as getting people to click/buy...might not be a bad look. Theo might look a little too badass for how strong he was in Soulhome, from what I remember. What's depicted is how Theo feels once he's fleshed out a bunch of his Ruler tier.

Jeff Petkau

I like the composition and general style of the covers. The wakespire especially looks really interesting. I don't like that the characters don't match the description in the books: Theo's black hair and general Kylo Ren look, Fiyu's mask not covering her eyes, and Nauda's dress and pose are looking a little too much like stereotypical anime fanservice.
