Christian Leon

Down the rabbit hole again.

Scott Ewing

Would love to hear Trent Reznor on the podcast.

Kevin Larkin Angioli

Yes. It's the same character. But he has aged and changed, as have the rest of the characters from the earlier book who are also in Imperial Bedrooms. They've been diminished and corrupted in various ways by the passage of time and life in LA. So, in another sense, he is not "the same Clay." Clay also features in Lunar Park, but that's a whole other story.

Keith Harmon

Is Clay from Less Than Zero the same Clay from Imperial Bedrooms?

James Eakins

loved hearing the twin peaks breakdown, would be awesome to have lynch on the podcast, would be a dream to hear bret and he discuss the art

Spee Diddy

Agreed

Harman Virdee

This is just a thought, based off what I myself have often done: Your millenial friend was significantly exaggerating his friends' reactions to his take on Lady Bird and Get Out. Perhaps just for the sake of the conversation, or maybe even to impress you. I only say this because, being a millenial, I know so few people who take such a hard-line as described, and so inherently flock to ideology and eliminate the possibility of further discussion. Maybe I'm just lucky in my friends, but this common perception of the millenial as comrade snowflake... obviously there's no smoke without fire but I hardly think it's something that affects the majority of my generation.

Richard MacManus

Hi Jason, yes indeed, big fan of the BEE podcast. A healthy antidote to the horrors of Web 2.0 ;)

Eddie Enciu

Welcome back! So glad you covered Twin Peaks! And PTA! I think you should give There Will Be Blood another watch. I enjoyed it more 11 years after its release. Maybe Ladybird during the Trump era was reminiscent of Lost In Translation during the W era? ….both good films but maybe something more behind the praise?

mark Hayhow

Brett looking forward to hooking back into ya podcasts. Ya Yes!! ripples have landed as waves on New Zealand shores..sweet job fine Sir

SGZ

I've missed your no bs insight, man!

The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

Second episode comes out tomorrow for the 1.50 tier

Julio Corea

I thought there was a new episode after this one?

The Dude

The Alex Garland as a guest is a great suggestion. He always makes for a great interview.

Jason Calacanis

hey richard! didn't know you were a closeted... BEE listener!

Richard MacManus

Would love to hear more about Bret’s thoughts on current book scene, what he’s reading etc. Also, related, Alex Garland as a guest?

Micha

I would like to suggest meeting the brilliant author Tom McCarthy on the podcast. His first novel "Remainder" is a postmodern mile stone of literature and has received a widely acknowledged review by Zadie Smith ("Two Paths for the Novel") that deals with the question of identity politics and subjective authenticity -- "Remainder" being an example for writing a novel about an emphatically inauthentic individual. In this instance alone I see quite an overlapping with the writing endeavors (with and against narrative) of the ground breaking work of Bret Easton Ellis. The latest novel of Mr. McCarthy is more of a highbrow approach to the current culture and the problem of making sense of it as an academic, or rather ex-academic who is working as a corporate ethnologist in the basement of a London based counseling firm. “Satin Island” addresses the intellectual enterprise of getting a grip on society, both philosophically and economically. I for my part would be VERY interested in a conversation between the two gentlemen in order to hear in how far Tom McCarthy actually shares Bret Easton Ellis’ attention for mainstream media content and for cinema as a symptom for the political and intellectual situation. Furthermore a conversation between these two exceptional authors would be an interesting occasion to talk about literature and the promises and limits of fiction and narrative on this great podcast.

James Reeves

Could you invite Fred Stoller onto the BEE Podcast? (1) You talked about “I’m Dying Up Here” as a guilty pleasure. I think Stoller would have interesting insights. (2) Stoller is LA-based. (3) Stoller is really knowledgeable in 70s and 80s culture and movies. (4) Stoller is a published author (‘Maybe We’ll Have You Back’) with nothing to sell.

Charles Fischer

Smartest film and cultural critic around. Thank you Bret. Welcome back.

Paul b

Would it be possible to get some show notes with links ect?

MidRangeG

Hallelujah! You've been sorely missed. I'd be interested to hear where the new Blade Runner went wrong for you. I loved it in many ways, yet am certain I would have loved it more if they had told any story without Harrison Ford. The man has no shame. Do you consider 2049 a successful foray into the mega-budget art-house scene?

Anna Fox

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Alan Ball show Here and Now. Really glad the show is back!

Marian Berges

Going to read Glamorama again

Chadwick Hartwell, III

Bret, your voice was sorely missed over the past year.. You might consider pumping out a few more podcasts to make up for your absence ;) j/k. welcome back

Ben

Bret, really happy you’re back. Saying it like it is. Completely agree with your thoughts on the films you mention though I did think Three Billboards had some stock characters in its supporting cast.

Kevin Burzynski

.......How did Bret not mention the film Good Time?

Claire Ginocchio

I think it would be near impossible because I don't think he does interviews anymore, but if he could be convinced, I would love a podcast with Lars von Trier.

Craig

Your opinion on Black Panther please in the next podcast would be good to hear.

Kolio

I mean, there are no "buts", I've always loved the podcast and continue to believe it's the best movie and entertainment podcast around. <3

Kolio

You are of course welcome to your opinion of Get Out, but I was surprised to hear you demonstrate on the podcast that you didn't understand the plot (the Armitages perform brain, not eye transplants--think Being John Malkovich) even after seeing it twice. When you take this into account I think that actually speaks for Get Out rather than against it as a so-called "prestige" work. Its critique of white fetishization of black people and culture that is objectively, demonstrably true on a cultural level, is a sophisticated (not to mention comedic) use of your beloved horror genre. I enjoy being a patron of your podcast but you might revisit the movie or wikipedia page before delivering additional analysis of the work.

Ski Milius

If the great Pauline Kael had a podcast, this would be it.

Jeremy Donaldson

I have never been a patron for anything, but immediately signed up when I saw this. Absolutely worth paying for.

James Reeves

Downside to having Bret’s podcast return == I had almost forgotten about my constant checking to see if a new episode was uploaded. So the daily checking begins again (while I listen to the most recent episode over and over).

The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

Thanks Patrick.

Patrick Hoelck

Congratulations on your new platform

Vince Eckert

I want to be on the podcast

Raymond Cummings

Chris Ott NEEDS to be a guest on this show.

LowRes Wünderbred

Safdie Brothers as guests, please.

Daniel Morfesis

Great to have you back! Wondering where you been!! I'd love to hear you talk with Steven Soderbergh sometime in the future. His career spans every type of genre and mode of filmmaking - big budget studio films, oscar films, micro budget diy, television. Would be fascinating to hear you two riff on the state of the filmmaking industry.

LeRoi

why is this like 40 leagues above any contemporary discussion of art. bret is too smart for hollywood/american media lmao

Mitch Jordan

Thanks Bret, great to have you back.

Andrey Belyakov

Wow, seems like the world is right again. Hope this return is for good.

JEREMY ROBERTS

enjoyed it

Elizabeth M007

So glad you're back. I've felt like a withering tree in your absence.

Brad Coy

Maybe I missed the introduction. Who is Bret having a conversation with in the final segment of this podcast?

Dave Nazworthy

So glad you're back on and I'm happy to pay for it. I hope you're able to have Frank Ocean on the show.

Ravin Chand

Would love Dave Navarro as a guest. His Dark Matter podcast is my other go-to. He really loves movies, I think it would be a good convo!

Dan Lett

Stephen, if you still haven't figure it out: go to the rss link (in the overview tab, on the right) then in your podcast application there should be a menu item for "add podcast" or "podcast url" — paste it in there. I'm not sure about Google Play but both iTunes (mac) and Podcast Addict (android) have this feature.

James Reeves

+1 for Raimi AND Bruce Campbell

James Reeves

Morrissey is now a LA-based, too, correct? This would be exciting to pull off!

Claire Ginocchio

While I enjoyed it, I do think the acclaim for Get Out is a product of our current political climate, but I can't get on board with that sentiment for Lady Bird. That movie was a joy to watch - even though your assessment of the pacing and it being like a giant montage is correct. It didn't matter for me, I loved it and I think a lot of people felt the same way. I don't think Get Out is worthy of all the praise, BUT I was still glad to see a low budget horror movie in the best picture nominees... which never happens.

Filip Kruse

Great stuff! Would have loved to hear your thoughts on PTA's "Inherent Vice". Surely it is stylistically more similar to "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia" than all other later films?

Bad Habbit

Please bring Frank Ocean onto the podcast, hearing you mention the possibility got me hard. Another great guest would be Sam Raimi!

Greg Comiskey

Great episode... “.... as if Three Billboards was a public service announcement made by a committee of comrades”

Chris Carroll

Okay, so are we really doing this guest request thing? Everyone will roll their eyes, but Morrissey just went public this week with a critical diatribe against the London mayor and their spike in knife and acid attacks, that sounded like something from Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino. Morrissey would be a difficult and frustrating but fascinating interview.

James Reeves

Guest Request: Fred Schneider of B-52s

James Reeves

Return Guest Request: Karyn Kusama - one of my favorite interviews by Bret Easton Ellis.

James Reeves

Guest Request: Dino Stamatopoulos - writer / producer / musician / production company founder (Starburns Industries) / podcaster / Hollywood burnout / sexual deviant / all-around interesting dude.

James Reeves

Guest Request: Eric Stoltz

James Reeves

Love it love it love it!!!! Bret’s commitment and passion and his voice make me listen to every episode multiple times. Bret - take care of yourself and please make this a ritual. Would you ever consider doing topics outside your comfort zone? Architecture? Travel? Food? Autobiographical snippets? I just love listening to your insights- regardless of agreement— your arguments are always rational and incredibly articulated. I love your existence.

LM

Happy you're back, interested hearing the take on Ringwald but I'm even more curious about a further comment on the intense last several months for previous guest Rose McGowan. You talked a little bit about the #MeToo stuff, but since you have had some encounter (maybe it had just been through that interview) with her, and she has been really prominent, I'm curious about your observations. As you were talking about McDormand's character in Three Billboards, I actually thought of her and McGowan sort of sharing that same type of pain.

Luke

I’ve missed your calming tones and voice of reason. It means a great deal to have you back.

The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

In a couple of weeks!

Calum Hughes

Y'all got anymore of them podcasts?

Scott Bradley

So thrilled this is back. Listened to the episode this morning and it was fantastic.

Tom Whalen

Welcome back! Been chomping at the bit.

keagan Afonso

Bret, you're the only voice of reason when it comes to what film making has become today, your commentary on the film industry for the last 5 years has been nothing but the truth, I so badly wish you could make your own films and show them how its supposed to be made, idealism is the killer of art in contemporary cinema

Adam Chin

Our generation's Pauline Kael returns. Thank you Bret.

Mai Tai

Thanks Bret. Will always pay for what you do.

direk

I was very happy to see the announcement on facebook that the podcast is back! Would have been very sad if you didn't continue with this ( i never gave up hope though ) Everytime i got a notification that a new talk is online it felt like ... yeah the movie i was dying to see is finally out! I never got this feeling from other podcasts ... anyway, keep rocking Bret, All the best

Chris Young

I've been going through serious BEE withdrawal. Welcome back!

Hi Bret, I'm glad you're back, ready to hear you talking movies and stuff. Greets from Argentina.

The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast

I recommend downloading the patreon phone app!

David Lizerbram

OK, so how does one listen to this in an iPhone podcast player? Overcast is my app of choice. I listen to podcasts on the go and find that trying to stream audio from Safari never works well. Does Patreon have an app that one can stream from?

Frank Howley

THANK YOU!!!!!
