Yes and Bret is great writer and monologuer

This relates to a previous thing. The NXIUM "cult" BS. Bret is right. Who gives a shit? I watched the Starz doc that someone recommended. Such crap! These "cult experts" are worse than the "cult." Fuck these people! What pissed me off was that they referenced the Waco Branch Davidian thing where the US Federal Government came in and murdered a bunch of innocent people who never bothered anyone. The US Federal Government should have murdered these Mexico and Hollywood billionaires instead of simple people.

yeah but THE SHARDS is a great book. isn't that the "bottom line"?

slimshadyfan666

due to the hippie connections to my own visits to various mental hospitals i immediately connected the hippie in the bathroom to robert mallory, that freaked me out man

Disagree on analysis of Carpenters' "Goodbye To Love." The lyrics are clearly ironic, and even at that, lightly so. Karen sings tongue-in-cheek, because she knows the "singer" (the persona expressing the lyrics, which I contend, is NOT Karen) *will* find love someday—listen to Karen's voice: there's always that flavor of good-humor, a smirk, near parody in it; almost every song she sings is that way. The music, with its masculine-ized chorus and 70's soft-rock vibe, and descending notes, is itself a kind of plaintiveness, that the rock guitar solo twice—like a sudden jester—belies. The song is an example of pure projection: we can't help but paste our knowledge of the tragedy of Karen over it, when we hear it—we can't un-know that, like we can't un-know Norman Bates is the real killer in PSYCHO. And it lends it a depth it doesn't deserve. Someone should experiment by playing this song for people who know **nothing about Karen Carpenter**—I bet they'd have quite different reactions to it.

People have different opinions, stop with the QQ. Do you want Bret to change to be more like you? So no one would ever know his name or his opinions? Lol no way!

Boo. Hoo.

P.S. Yes, I am a straight black male if it wasn’t any indication.

I’m looking forward to the newest podcast in which Bret acknowledges his error in judgement for his “unbiased” tight rope walk of an interview that border true trumpism when he gave Amanda Milus unchecked runway to spew her B.S. I love Bret Eastons books, but this year has just uncovered how whenever his unfettered privilege is interrupted with pursuits of social and economic equality he transforms into a grumpy nostalgic depraved whiner. He speaks of the snowflake era, yet he’s of an error of gluttonous excess and height of white male imperial cultural dominance that actually rewarded mediocrity in a lot of cases, except him. Bret Easton is a great writer, he’s masterful in his craft and sharp critique of culture. But as he’s gotten older, sometime I wonder if that sharp eye of critique has formed a sort of conservative cataract which the younger version of himself would have renounced. Although, he’s still entertaining and so I subscribe, as anyone would who has that one crazy uncle with zero filters that makes for hilarious dinner party convo.

Erick

Yay new pod! Will listen tomorrow

LOctagon

Interesting Lindsey Buckingham trivia: he was lined up to produce a Bangles album in 1990, but they broke up in 1989.

Listening to The Shards, I can't help but think: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past."

Dale Baker

I could listen to BEE answer questions all day. Love it! Adam rules on this one too! Great episode gents! #saveshingy

Jim Weaver

Be sure and tell Todd he nailed your bumper music! It works so well. I honestly figured it might be some hidden Eagles track that I’d never uncovered.

David

How is The Shards not the most talked about thing in pop culture rn? What’s going wrong with the media filters?

Luke

When your question doesn't get read but you get to find out Bret likes giving blowjobs -_- Good for you Bret for doing 4 hours of this but these questions were so tame. So many American psycho questions that can be found out via Google.

Fernando

They skipped me too and all I asked brett if he was cut or uncut

I loved the moment in this episode where Bret has more of an insight about the nature of the vacuous “space” but can’t bring himself to admit he is smarter than his friends. He’s tricking himself into believing he’s hearing things that aren’t there — when he’s actually seeing things that are. Deep teenage friendships are almost religious — we can’t be too different, see or know too much. There must be order. Along with everything else working here I particularly enjoyed these subtle observations from the wiser narrator.

Bret — acknowledge me senpai!!!!

I am living for The Shards! 💜 Utterly entrancing- amazing work from Bret. It feels so intimate, I have the urge to pick up the phone and talk to him about it, and then remember we aren’t really friends. 😅

Chris Gerard

Great installment of The Shards. Tom Wright, holy cow, I hope you “survive” Robert Mallory. Tom is my guy (and Bret).

Elizabeth

Great episode! Bret always gives great movie/documentary recommendations. As a working mom I make notes of his recommendations so I can watch on my downtime. The Milius documentary was well worth watching. So many interesting antidotes. Favorite quote: “John didnt write for pussies or women” Did Bret watch the Bee Gee documentary? It’s fantastic!

Brian Rooney

Excellent episode. Thanks for answering our questions!

Billy Vega

Interesting answer to the 'is social media essential to get published ?' question Seemed to really tick Bret off that one !! There are still people who talk about getting an agent etc... through traditional means though.

TimAnder

... The rest from this batch of questions would be a good Stand-in if a guest cancells. I sure would love to get my question answered. Anyway... Fantastic Episiode/Chapter of The Shards!

Bazayer

Loved the Q&A. I'm going to give Bret's 'Scenes From a Marriage' recommendation a go.

Will Cross

Awesome episode. Thanks to Bret for giving us four hours of gold! The Shards also gets better and better

Chase

My question was not answered. Chase is getting upset

This episode of your novel was great. Classic BEE! Suspenseful, filled with mood and style. Evocative of your classic work, but different - fresh and electric. . Whatever form this project eventually takes - I’m in. If it’s a book, I want it, if it’s a movie, I want to see it, if The Shards is released as an audio book, I want it. Also, (you mentioned)the possibility of a book about seventies cinema really is exciting. I enjoyed every minute of this episode. Thank you. Looking forward to BEE podcast in 2021...!!

Courtney

BEE likes Moana! I love you.

Nicolas Curcio

Was this the final part of the shards?

Callan Wilks

4hours! Bret you absolute monster. Thanks

Christian
