Going from the smartest person ever to be on the podcast to this gal was quite the mood swing! I broadly agree that comedy should be free but the rest of the convo was pretty shallow, hence why she's only getting one episode. My fave comedian remains Louis CK who can be v. 'offensive' but also enlightening and poignant and goofy. Other people like Gervais are just needlessly cruel cos they can't come up with anything else. And sorry to hear about Bret's loss.

However I still think there is a lot of edgy comedy out there, I again just think that edgy “conservative” comics just aren’t funny, they tell the ssme joke over and over again. Yet many edgy “liberal” comics still exist. Shane Gillis’s recent Netflix special is hilarious and edgy, and well received despite making fun of women, liberals, conservatives, etc. I just think too many of these conversations exist only in this realm of culture wars, which only exists in spaces like twitter, etc. The majority of ppl will laugh at an edgy joke

That's a pretty shallow analysis. Bret has been quite clear about his criticism stemming from how little the most vocal people know about the subjects they ardently support. They watch a single news outlet and trumpet the talking points back at him, or as a group eagerly await any dissenting voice so they can respond with a chorus of Rachel Maddow quotes. And when faced with data and "science" that contradicts their position, such as vaccine injury data rolling out and being completely buried by these news sources, they pivot to "What about Putin!" It's not necessarily what they believe, it's HOW they believe, and the fact that none of their positions are arrived at as the result of consideration and comparison. Just parroted, programmed, like Bateman was by commercials, advertisements, and product placement.

Removing pornographic materials from publicly funded schools and libraries is not "banning a book." Nor is it censorship. They are still printed and available on the open market. Why make excuses for bad art, music that doesn't have enough tempo changes, harmonies and rhythm to even qualify as music just to stay involved in the conversation? Funny thing is when I was there the school was also religious right-wing. I had a column called From the Left; even though, I was a moderate. As a free speech absolutist (and a dirtbag liberal) myself, I thought Bret and the Fox lady made some interesting points. The stuff about Chris Rock, people being railroaded without any context etc were compelling, articulate and well laid out arguments. But the overall problem for me is that the arguments are impossible to take seriously due to the obvious right wing bias. The cancel culture and free speech criticisms were only reserved for the left; no mention of wack-job politicians on the right who have been banning books, banning drag shows and ousting political opponents for exercising their free speech. Are you a free speech absolutist or not? Why no criticism for the other side of the aisle? It seems like an odd omission.
