Mecanimus

With no magic he is no stronger than a mortal so pistols make sense. You cannot kill a vampire with a pistol. Since she was starting to move it was smarter to retreat otherwise it would have been magicless mortal vs pissed off vampire.

Crushow

So, he could not kill Dalton with his bare hands but a pistol was okay? And why did he not kill Ari with a pistol also?

Mecanimus

No, he was blocked from his magic by breaking the truce but he killed Dalton with a pistol.

Crushow

Hm, care to explain how exactly the Herold was able to kill Dalton when he was at that point a magical being and unter the effect of the truce? As a human, he was not bound by his oath, but after the use of the Key he should have been no longer able to attack? Or was the attack of Dalton a sort of permission to retaliate against the attacker?

Get that mother fucker Arianne!

ArturScott

Fuck it was strong, one of the best chapters, it's so deep and..., i have no words it just hit me to the core, wow ...

L Pedersen

I swear I wrote that before Mec replied :X

Tibbish you might want to read that scene again. The artifact wasn't acting directly on Ari, it had no hold on her probably because her connection to the Watcher. It tried to eat Dalton like all the others and couldn't because her bond with him through vassalage protected him and she got fucked up by the tug of war. "The tendrils of power pull on my very essence and find no purchase, but they follow Dalton’s bond into my soul and the tug of war for my essence is horrific." At least that's my take on it, maybe there was a different reason for Dalton being unaffected but to me is seemed obvious.

tibbish

That'd make more sense plotwise but I didn't really notice any hint of that being a thing before hand in story so it'd still feel like it wouldn't make sense to me. Gives me the same vibes midichlorians or Jedi Force Speed did in the movies which is to say it teeeecchhhnniiicchhaaallllyyyy make sense but really its just a quick bodge story wise to make a scene work.

Mecanimus

My logic here was that it pulls on everyone but her, since she's not technically alive, but the pull is transfered to her via the bond she and Dalton share. It protects him but hurts her. I am not sure how to make it obvious.

L Pedersen

I think The master is going to be around for a long long time yet. I don't think whatever arc this leads into is going to end with him dying rather than just going away. It's possible that he's already accopmlished whatever he came back for and is leaving for the old world again. Now Ari against a squad of knights? That's a lot more like it for character growth and story progression.

L Pedersen

I loved it. I'm not a fan of killing characters in general but if it's going to be done then it must be done well. This was done well. And we all knew this was coming, Dalton did say he did not want an unnatural life. He was always going to die long before Ari's story ended. At least this way his death had meaning.

tibbish

I'd almost rather he didn't perform at all in that situation. The Herald effectively had Arianne in 'check' with that situation, and undergoing some emotional trauma and not thinking all that straight himself, I'd rather he just go and kill (or mortally wound him so he could still get a few last words, however you want) Dalton while Arianne and everyone is locked up so that he could hurt her emotionally like he was hurting before he killed her too. This would cause his powers to fail (since he broke his oath of peace for the talks) and allow Arianne to move and retaliate in a fashion harsh enough to make him run (ie. ripping his arm off) if I still wanted to keep him around for a revenge arc or even just kill him out right (ie. have her rip off the arm holding the artifact then rip off his head (this would be my preference since IMO Arianne is the sort to think through her rage/bloodlust and would still do so here)).

tibbish

Oh no hurry, which was my point. We're in no danger of Arianne becoming OP any time soon due to the difference in power is what I was getting at.

Anghwrtais

Have you a suggestion about how Dalton could perform in said circumstances? Would you prefer a plot solution that does not involve him?

Anghwrtais

What's the hurry? So it takes a century to develop. Mec can do a shit ton of world building in-between. Master has kicked her to the curb, and has no reason to circle back. Let her become a bad ass in her own right before she goes to ultra class. No rush, her best asset is her perceived insignificance.

tibbish

The Master is too strong (edit) for that to happen any time soon though. Basically everyone bows to him and does what he says because he can kill even the strongest of Lords at will. Unless Arianne does something silly like eats the artifact to get a huge power up it'll be decades at least of eating mages before she can even hope to beat the Master. Probably more like a century or more given the Master has been eating mages for hundreds of years at least.

I like this story and your writing in general but the key major event that drives everything here seems to be a major plot hole to me. Arianne and everyone, except for somehow Dalton (which also makes no sense since everyone in the area regardless of line of sight was effected him standing behind her wouldn't have mattered a bit), being locked up and/or incapacitated when that guy pulled out the artifact (even after he broke his oath and was supposedly unable to use his powers which should've allowed Arianne to retaliate and either maim or kill him) seems to be a major plot hole. If Dalton could move and somehow resist the power of the artifact then Arianne should've been able to as well. And really if something can lock up Arianne and everyone else than Dalton should've been locked up to and realistically at that point the story is over because there is no way the Herald wouldn't have killed her and Dalton when he had the means. Basically Arianne being unable to do anything at all while Dalton still could just didn't make any sense to me and broke my ability to suspend disbelief and that made his death and the drama that unfolded with it seem.... cheap and forced. I'm not dropping this story at all, every author makes oopsies, just pointing one out is all

Anghwrtais

Nice job. Props for the long term character development, losing a major character. I feel the tear jerking. I like the kamikaze vibe that follows. I liked the ending with the Sanskrit. On a whish list note, I don't want to see her become Mary Sue yet. Someone else should off Master. She can help. Her ruling the world and shepherding her family's decedent's should take a few decades to develop.

Mecanimus

Yeah... Me too.

S. Nutter

I will admit it. I cried. A lot. This is a great chapter.

Mecanimus

That took everything out of me.
