phantom

Of course not. She killed royalty and would go back to leading a mini kingdom that had been proclaimed rebels. That would go against so much of what they stand for and ruin their reputation.

Mecanimus

It's very nice if you can binge but boy were people mad with this arc lol.

Trollballz

Hot Damn! I just started contributing to the patreon today, but chapters like this are what i signed up for! Loved the talk with the witch and homeboy getting lightsabered at the end. This chapter is my new favorite.

Venalitor

He would also have been immobile dead weight that probably took some effort to transport without instantly killing him anyway. There's also the point that a legitimate contender for the crown with a debatably better claim couldn't be allowed to exist. Speaking of which, I'd wager Sangor isn't long for Nyil either.

Mecanimus

Hmmm to be fair he would have been the perfect hostage to instantly end the war.

Venalitor

“He was disarmed. I expected you to take him hostage or something?” - In a fort held by the enemy? The hell's wrong with her? I don't buy that she'd give a shit about him being her patient. She must take Sangor for an idiot too. Of course, they could have at least taken the prince's head for effect. “So, which tradition are you from?” - Damn. I was so hoping for it to be 'the fuck tradition'.

lenkite

"A quick neck broke against a transparent shield" What ?

lenkite

"In fact, getting clumped was almost always a bad idea in the modern world. Here, things were different. " Contradiction from the Bombardment Protocol mentioned earlier when Enorian Formation explicitly broke up.

BurnNote

I imagined that Tarano already used up his alotment of timeslow. I mean, that hit to his armor shows he's been fighting, and we don't see all the hits he dodged. That he failed to dodge one could be because he didn't have the boost anymore. Another factor is that I don't think he expected her to just straight up shank him right there. He's a huge misogynist, and he's got very strong opinions on how woman are like and how they (should) act. That does not include getting close and personal (whereas Viv will tackle a necromancer from an undead bear inside a group of revenants and then stab the life out o him, or someone several steps above her, in his fortes and in front of a bunch of allies also stronger than her). That gets compounded by the fact that warcasters are best a long range. If you wanted to shank people in person, you'd become a warrior. He would not expect her to have a spell like exalibur, which is made to kill extremely nasty beasties that are right in her face. Her shied might have confirmed that view, because it's so overwrought that it's clearly more symbol than tool for battle. It just didn't start that way. I'm also not sure how familiar he is with witches/intuitive casters of high attunement, who can pull a spell from anywhere at a moments notice. It doesn't seem to be a favored style locally, so he might have expected more warning if she did decide to do something. In conclusion, Tarano getting totally flat-footed fits his biases and shown character, and it's nicely karmic too. Enorian attitude to women is a big part of why Viv thinks they suck.

jcox

Foolish AND surprisingly hard-hitting then. Makes sense. I think you could still slip that shield thing in if you wanted: "The ray of concentrated annihilation smashed through a hastily interposed shield and the weakened side of Tarano’s armored torso, rending his heart and most of his chest."

Mecanimus

That's a good question, I considered it actually. First, he doesn't know about Arthus because none of the prisoners broke their oaths which means that he doesn't know what happened in Kazar. As for his reasoning, he wanted to draw out Sangor into a decisive engagement by devastating separatist land around Koltis.... except that Sangor didn't take the bait. Instead, he massed a very powerful army using unexpected allies including witch orders and maneuvered Tarano into a corner. That's how I see it happening.

Mecanimus

I'm considering making it a complete cliff hanger when it reaches RR

Midjji

If arthur catches her falling... She will rise back up above the keep, against a backgroynd of fire and war, surrounded by the black tendrils, with dragons wings at her back, and an overpowering sense of fire death and ash. Now that the new king will remember.

Midjji

Said to someone who was only saved, not protected by, the winning side. He may well have known the victors would let him go, perhaps take some of his land, but he would likely remain a noble. Well if he hadnt pissed of viv

Midjji

Neriad is the god of righteous war, yet somehow people always seem to forget about the last part...

Wandering Agent

"I'm coming to kill you and all your friends." Is not a smart way to go when you're on the losing side of a fight.

Winny

With the prince dead, and the rebels now the dominating force, I wonder how that will pan out. Will they all flutter to the single banner now with the prince dead? Or will the country fracture between dominating forces. If we take China as an example, we could see the country pieced by factions and warlords. Those loyal to the loyalists wont follow the rebels and with out a unifying force to rally against, the rebels themselves could fracture between themselves. We could see the country going the balkin states route and just splitting up. It would also mean Viv's own city could go from city state to its own country. And just like karma of the rebel leader killing the prince instead of taking a hostage to simply "End it" he would be forcing Viv without knowing it to unlock some type of "Harraken Empress" class because he would be ending one nation but jump starting many smaller nations. Every power holder in the country would go from whatever their class is to unlocking multiple different "Kings/Queens/Empress/Emporers" classes simple because he was WAY to hasty in ending his own blood fued.

ShotoGun

I’m confused about what exactly was the constables plan. Was he deluded or dumb? I get he was desperate but what was the thought process. Did he not know about Viv’s dragon? Assuming he kept Viv around the dragon would grow up in a few years and come barbecue them.

Mecanimus

Right now? I cliff my readers once a month at least.

Mecanimus

In a week!

Mecanimus

You are all correct here, and I considered adding a description of Tarano using a shield and trying to deflect the spell but found it ruined the cinematic effect. The way I see it, Tarano felt the spell trigger and slowed down time, but he also vastly underestimated Viv's penetration power. Essentially, she is unique in her profile of pure black caster which means that she is extremely powerful one on one but much less flexible that others. Add to this that witches are more powerful in the heat of things than mages who do better with preparations and the fact that he was mad at her and was trying to kill her and you get a surprise kill by a spell design to bypass the resistance of aberrations. It would never have worked at longer range and it would never have worked without the surprise effect. That's how I see it. Anyway sorry for rambling, I thought it was a very good point.

Mecanimus

I do like karma in my stories. And also people getting fucked by their 'principles'.

Winny

The really funny thing is if instead of capturing viv if they simply made a truce and signed some type of deal with less threatening it probably could have worked. Viv had no beef with the dying prince, the prince she hated was dead. Its kind of funny if what tarano practiced what he preached and was humble this entire thing could have gone differently. Thanks for the chappy.

Nicholas Grey

I was about to say “Yes, it was quite clearly and explicitly explained?”, but then I realised that was a completely different fic.

pelya

Tarano is a spellblade and two steps higher, he is supposed to have time slow danger sense like Viv, and be able to cut fireballs with his blade or something. It's a hard sell when he just stands there and does nothing.

Jacob

felt like in the heat of the moment he forgot the damage to his armor

Meise

I would rather try my luck with torture, and I would have done it if the cinrcumstances were not so... delicate.” > circumstances Only a worthy cause would sway here and this wasn’t it. > her

jcox

So, is it unusual for a mage at Viv's stage to be that dangerous at knife-range, or was Tarano just being foolish here? Also, kudos on Tarano's personality. The whole thing he has with just assuming Viv owes him or his faction allegiance makes him a really infuriating antagonist. "Treachery" indeed.

Cormac

Thanks. Where does the enmity between mages and witches come from? Did it start as maybe purely academic differences that morphed over time into actual hatred?

Morog T Tiny

irl for those of us who practice fasting, the first three days are the hard part after that it becomes easy. hunger fades. If you want to make it hard on someone, give them a very small amount of food at different times every day.

Dopplerdee

The hypocrisy of the loyalist is very realistic....painfully so

Andrew

Thank you!

Niko

TFTC, Seriously you are killing it, can't wait for the next chapter!

Daryl McGuire

Jayzus…

Faiir

Yay! Out of the prison

RottenTangerine

Great chapter! Cliff was mean but oh well. Lol. Can't wait to read more of the story.

Alex C

Nah, the cliff crumbled just as she grabbed it at the end

Jeanean

This could have been quite the litteral Cliffhanger...

Mecanimus

Me too buddy, me too...

Mecanimus

Damn I should have done just that

Mecanimus

Thanks because I really try. Changing story lets me keep it fresh, so to speak.

Liban D.

I gotta say, you are doing such an incredible job with both your stories. Every time I finish reading one, I keep hoping for more of that one instead of the other, and then you release a chapter of the other one and suddenly I want more of that! Bloody hell. Just astounding. You're killing it man! :)

Jo

Hmm, if the chapter ended just two sentences earlier this would have been a literal cliffhanger xD.

Young Youghurt

If only there was some superior entity, made of metal or perhaps bones, powered by endless will and without any meat bag faults, that could save her.

Deinos

The End. Was a nice story, too bad about the abrupt end, I mean knowing that she is bodily mostly just an ordinary human. :D

crusaderstar

Fantastic chapter, gah want the next!

Leviathon251

That was epic ngl. Thanks for the chapter

luda305

Lol, cliff-hanger.
