Isley

good chappie

Mecanimus

I think I clearly stated that the army was already on its way to this location long before in later chapters but I'll have Viv remark on it for clarity's sake. I'll probably also write a small scene from the boy's perspective to explain that he betrayed Viv in the taown he went alone to.

Aapjuh

Chapter does feel off. Regarding the oath, other gods are fine with the loophole, seems unlikely because the word of a god means nothing if its possible to skip around it? Viv and co spend 2~ nights in the village after the spider threat was beaten, the Boy went to another village/town, alerted a guard/priest/authority-figure (who happens to be royalist, with connections to the army, out in the boonies), they confirmed the boy had info, managed to arrange a priest to die (who are on standby in the boonies as priests of that caliber tend to be), magically phone the army, army comes from god knows where within 1~day (riiight, logistic wise.. nah), an extensive the trap is planned and excecuted, silently, undetected. .. sure, seems legit. Doesn't help that the army with viv captured in the next chapter takes 4 days to reach kortis, which viv and co did in 1-2~ days on horses while chased by bountyhunters, so either the army was already in the boonies or the boonies is not boonies at all and every city/town is in easy walking distance (which would make spider heralds complaints about having no options in the boonies odd), the times/distance doesn't add up.

Mecanimus

Yes, I think it can be handled better but I don't know how without changing the story,

fbt

Unlike some other readers, I don't claim it's wrong, or unreasonable, or unrealistic, or out of char...but I still didn't care for this chappy, for purely personal reasons. But u do u! :) trying to please readers rather than following your muse is a path to mediocrity, sometimes.

Midjji

The golem is also arrogant, and consistently underestimates meatbags.

Heedless

The issue is less that they managed to break the oath - any high level politician is surrounded by people who will do self destructive things in their service. The problem is that Viv's paranoid, knowledgeable, homicidally protective golem didn't mention or prepare for this possibility. It's out of character.

Oxylus

Seems weird that people are reacting to oaths this hard. Magically binding oaths are great and seem to work for the vast majority of use cases. However, just like real life, when there is something that is going to restrict people, people with the power and means will come up with ways around it. Of course these people would come up with some way to bypass an oath. Just like they come up with paths and magic for all the other plethora of twisted stuff they come up with. This is a world with some pretty F'd up deities who constantly quarrel through their followers. None of them are benevolent. I feel like any type of "unbreakable" oath would require more than just one god to enforce, and I feel like the gods just don't want to force themselves into that sort of situation that could back them into a corner.

Kyle Pemberton

All right, I hope you can sort this out. But it feels like you created a mess for no reason. I don't mind that she was captured, I just feel like it was way too easy and contrived. I guess I'll see.

Mecanimus

I mean I’ve established clergymen can detect when someone is being truthful. Again risky but believable. Look I know it feels weird but trust me I have a plan. More will be explained next chapter. It’s not something I’m improvising. TRUST ME BRO I GOT THIS.

Kyle Pemberton

They have no reason to trust the testimony of some random kid that much. They have no reason to believe he's credible. Someone sacrificing themselves in that situation feels super contrived.

Mecanimus

I didn’t elaborate but priests are mostly unwilling to take on soul rending lethal curses upon themselves. It’s a desperate mesure. For the information I could offer you a possibility. The boy sees the wanted poster (the one he mentioned later) then takes it. He contacts the guard and mentions that he knows something important but cannot talk about it, still holding the poster. The head guard understands and contacts a priest. The priest knows that Tarano is desperate for information and decides that a sacrifice is worth it. I didn’t describe it because Viv has no way to know but there are plausible ways to hint at things without breaking the letter of the agreement. I understand that this development is unfair to Viv but it is, again, not horse shit. It is plausible given the means used to find her.

Kyle Pemberton

My problem is that no one warned Viv. If all it takes to lift an oath is for a priest to sacrifice themselves, then they might be very willing to do that to free a powerful mage like the one she released. And she had priest around her who should have that knowledge. Also the idea that a random boy could convince a priest to kill himself on the offchance he had some useful information feels like total horseshit.

Mecanimus

No don't worry I knew what to expect with this chapter. I am still confident in what will follow.

Mecanimus

Have faith in me >:D

Mecanimus

I understand people not liking this chapter but calling oaths pointless when the person who breaks them dies is absurd and unfair. Those are humans, not faeries. They break their vows and they pay the price but they are free to break their vows.

Kyle Pemberton

I really hated this chapter being honest. Felt super contrived. Oaths either mean something or they don't. If they don't mean anything people around her should've been advising her on how easy they are to break or find loopholes in. This is plain bad writing imo.

Winny

Ty for the chappy, I personally had mix feelings about it but ive come around to the idea, everyone may get upset but thats only because they care, so lets see what your planning mec. <3

Mecanimus

Good lol because this latest chapter made a lot of people unhappy.

Amaryllis

Binged all the chapters available over the last week, absolutely in love with the story so far!

Mecanimus

>:D

Mecanimus

I like the shock effect yes. Maybe a bit too much lol

Shakango Resident

I understand the difficulty and it's rare I've ever felt this way at least about one of your stories it just felt very tell and not show. I understood how it was circumvented but it bothered me perspective wise, since it was a lot of sudden outcome it felt like and not seen how it came to be. Thanks for writing Mecanimus, I like both your stories and hope I wasn't too harsh.

MrAcerulez

I couldn’t wait and RR for new chapters so I joined here and gotta say this story keeps getting better and better. I think the reason they brought the whole army and seem dour is perhaps the Kong has already died or the separatists has an army of their own on the way.

ShadowBlah

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but the story really revolves around betrayal and/or hidden enemies. It sort of was a numb shock of "oh here it is again" when this happened. Generally enjoying the story, but I'm really noticing this trend in this story for whatever reason.

Mecanimus

Thing is with difficult chapters, I’m dammed to matter what. If I had shown more signs that capture was imminent people would have argued about how Viv could have escaped. If the capture had been avoidable people would have complained that it was a cheap trick. The fact is that it’s an unpleasant read and it’s unpleasant for a purpose. I’d also remind you that the potion is to prevent Viv and especially Solfis from detecting nervousness on the part of Ardek. The oath was transferred to a priest who died in his stead.

Shakango Resident

I reread the chapter still feel the same, oathbreaking only takes a potion and is clearly undetectable. It won't matter until you're already trapped and in someone elses power if someone else can just die for you the first. It cheapens the story in some ways because so much of the things that rob her of agency happen off screen. So it feels hand wavy, like the 'heavens decreed Viv suddenly gets captured by a full army and she is completely unaware. 'Thanks to one potion, a dead alias priest, a kid was able to lead Viv to a complete army with no signs of mobilization somehow?'

Shakango Resident

Honestly, this Chapter Irks me quite a bit cause it feels untelegraphed. Like if there were more context clues that you could maybe sense that this could happen then yes, I might be able to accept it. However it seemed to come out of nowhere and little to no resistance was possible. At that point it just feels like torture porn or something contrived. Like you'd ask why isn't there more resistance more this or that. Like how hard did she work to kill sudden spider civilization thing, I hope either she kills more people then or just murderhobos. I know that's out of character but, if at any point she can be robbed of agency like hand of divine punishment and not even from a clear story standpoint, then it might as well go that way. Least, that's the cynic in mes thinking. Though it could be just as it's a webserial this story has been one of the coolest, I am hoping with all my heart it doesn't go to sockpuppet adventures.

tibbish

Nah thats BS. The author railroaded this super hard. The oath alone should've been enough to protect her from any scheming by that guy but suddenly oath breaking is no big deal? On top of that she was going through a area that was incredibly unpopulated, the effective ass end of nowhere with almost no one around, and a howling wilderness separating some tiny villages to walk through. Armies and bounty's don't much matter when there is pretty much no one around to enforce them. Finally enslavement/prisoner arcs are overdone and gauche in this genre. On top of that to get them out of their enslavement/imprisonment they usually have to get massively plot armored and such anyways so its not worth it anyways. I really have been liking the story but authors can and do make mistakes and this time they really stepped in it.

One thought I couldn't get out of my head today is that Viv and her new nation in the future, and she in particular, are more likely to be the champion of Maranor than the current nation and champions she has or had. Probably because of this passage "Maranor again. Viv felt like she had never met the bitch and yet they were already enemies for life or something. Her and her fucking fan club." And wasn't Maranor also the wife of the god who brought her into this world and took over her life on earth? Because of this passage and because I have in my head that Maranor was the wife of the god of luck, but I can be wrong.

Melting Sky

I'm a bit dumbfounded we have people insisting it's somehow BS that Viv got caught while traveling for weeks on end through enemy territory with a readily recognizable party, a bounty on her head worth a king's ransom, and a literal army hunting her down. If anything, it would be a far more unbelievable scenario if she wasn't caught. The only part of this that seems off is the fact the whole loyalist army appears to have been mobilized to capture her. That doesn't make sense unless there is more to this situation than meets the eye. The fact that Viv has actively questioned this incongruity suggests this is likely the case.

Martin Küster

Start of the first book, everybody have from the mother life mana, if the menacles work on this principle and project pain trough the lifemana, the manacles would be harmless for her, she have only deathmana

Banroth

So Viv will gain an amry, and will have to conquer their homeland against revolutionaries? Counter Revolution with the official army and the first prince as puppet. Could be a thing.

Jeanean

Recharging Solfis manually isn't something thats done quickly. If I remember correctly, Viv can charge him manually maybe 2%-5% per day, which would equate to roughly one or two months they would have to stay in that village. Viv doesn't have an endless amount of time.

Cormac

Well I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Infinate Fail

AAHHHHH I NEED MORE! Where is the patreon for the patreon, any spare time machines?

Jan Verner

I just wanted to let the autor know that I support the way this story is going. Prison arc is bound to happen since this is a story about us watching Mechanicus writing better “get transported to fantasy world” novel. So far it is better then 95% of other works like that. And I’m really looking forward to some dark and grim chapters.

RageBone

They do not know that i think. They are searching for A witch, a drake and a karrak*? So they know shit, and they think they know her and everything because they fricken believe their own propaganda.

RageBone

You are RIGHT FFFF For a Dragon, well

Steven C

"there isn’t that much overlap between being a good mom and melting someone’s face off" Well, maybe not for a human.

BurnNote

Well, journey started on a capture arc. So there's that.

Kotawa Ma

She's never making it to that school, is she?

Gardor

Marruk cooked the food that poisoned Viv?

RageBone

i am kinda looking forward to this arc actually. Not completely sure why. A few things i have noticed and that i'm intrigued about are that the manacles appear to only limit external manifestations and only punishes with pain? And that the Enorians believe their own propaganda. Which is obviously stupid and i'm looking forward to that fucking them over. Lastly, the worst case i can envision is that they push viv to far and she goes nuclear. The Jailor could notice and try to prevent it, but that might be an impressive POV of him whitenessing viv go Nuclear rage / calm and then end them all. Additionally, it doesn't seem like the enorians know her to be heiress of harrak and that her life is in danger from her atunement. Both could be a factor in her going nuclear.

Eric

Well they know that a Dragons regards her as a mother , so why should they risk that their whole army gets burned to cinder ? On a side note -> maybe a Arthur POV from the capture and so on ?

Overclocked

I hate capture subplots. She'll be tortured a bit, probably humiliated by smug assholes. Maybe she'll get a shot in or two then broken down some. She'll get free, enact some vengeance and never be the same. Boo

RageBone

one question i have with the poisoning and the chase is, where is Arthur? Or where was she? Obviously not on the ground but welp. Did she also eat and get poisoned? Apparently not! It just seem to me like the most important person in this story was nearly completed absent from the relevant part of the chapter.

Kiwilord

Fantastic! We needed a arc to erode her goodness and nurture her grudge against gods in general

Alex C

Stuff gets lost pretty easily when reading chapters spaced out like this.

Max Dreger

Im surprised that so many seem to be confused with the oaths. The mage didnt break hers because she neither harmed them nor gave away information. She was ordered to help corner them but couldnt have accually hurt Viv without breaking her Oath. The information was coming form the boy, he went to town and insinuated that he had info, so they got a priest of maranor to breack the oath. The priest died and the boy was able to give the information. Then they gave him the potion so he wouldnt show any signs to Viv and Solfis. Even with the Priest having died for him to give away information he still suffers for breaking the oath since apparently he cant be healed anymore. The only thing I feel hasnt been explained yet is why the Whole army was in her approximate area and how Arthur could miss them. I hope that will be explained in future chapters. I can understand people not liking an arc like this, but im willing to trust Mecanimus to not make it cringy tortureporn or stretch it out too much and get us through this with the usual quality :)

Addanc

Yep cya for now send out a message when this arc is over would ya

Blah64

Welp, I think I'm taking a break on this story 'till this arc is over.

Alex C

I despise capture arcs. May need to drop this for awhile and come back when it's over and just skim it. They can be great for development and dialogue but it has to fight uphill against every other novel that has used it poorly. It just creates this immediate visceral desire to stop reading because all other novels so far have just created negative feelings around this. It's like someone saying watching torture in a movie is needed for the narrative. Sure maybe it adds to the narrative but I'd still rather than just not watch the movie than have to watch torture.

marids

If Solfis was still low on power then I don't get they started moving before he was recharged fully first. This is the price of haste I'd say.

Mecanimus

Yeah it’s probably a frustrating experience.

Adurna

Yeah this sort of arc is not likely to benefit from the slow releases, though the chapter length will help. Best of luck!

Nicholas Grey

“Ardek still had them give most villages a wild berth” - wide berth

Mecanimus

I never said it was the clergy of Enttiku that took upon the oath. The crown is backed by Maranor. Eteia didn't break her oath.

StarWolf

Point

Reminder

Not quite sure how I feel about this capture. Solfis has been known to be extremely perceptive and really paranoid about everything involving Viv, I just don't see Ardek making a single meal without Solfis watching ... Also the fact that it's possible to circumvent the oath with a potion means Solfis should know about it as well and most likely watch for such signs ... But all of that could maybe be explained with Solfis running low on power etc, that is still somewhat fine ... The one thing that I just can't understand is how you can miss an army with a dragon flying around all the time?

The Stars Align

Looking forward until this arc is over, prisoner arcs are kinda meh, especially if they come in way that feels contrived (might be perfectly explained later, but you have to wait like week to find out why) but the oathbreaking seems very weird. On both accounts. Especially the part of the boy being helped by a priest to break an oath against their own god. While sure the boy had to face dire consequences, It makes these oaths feel meaningless, from the the party these oaths are supposed to protect.

Mecanimus

>:D

Mecanimus

I think we need downs to get ups.

Ozark

Yeeeep. Imma just wait til this arc is over before continuing.

Sebin Paul

Totally understandable that this is happening, but I still hate prisoner/slave arcs :/

Andrew

Thank you!

Ryan Brudnicki

I thought it was a great chapter I really like these types of scenarios as well I like it when things go poorly for the protagonist because once they finally wiggle their way out of the trouble it's always such a great relief

StarWolf

Agreed and Solfis would know better than to allow the heir to surrender that easily, surrender is the absolute last resort. Viv did not reach that point.

StarWolf

Agreed I don’t buy into this chapter. Seems too convenient to me. Was to easy to capture Viv.

Nim

The Black Death killed 30-60% of the European population over 7 years and it's very well remembered still. A 20% loss is pretty huge.

Dopplerdee

Kinda dumb that the priests are fine with helping to break oaths made to their own gods. Seems like that would net them a loss of favor.

Leviathon251

Its now 1:30 am but I still read the chapter. Thanks for the chapter, hope they all die and their country falls to pieces. (:

crusaderstar

Or the parole oath could've included not to spread any information her or Harrak's capabilities.

crusaderstar

There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel and it is a dragon :P. Small gripe I had was it seems the time between ardek visiting town to betray and entire loyalist army descending on her is very small, unless the army was already right there.

MacDB

If the fire mage could just go back and give all this information on viv and assist in her capture what was the point in allowing her to live? It seems very stupid on viv’s part.

MacDB

Great, a capture arc, fantastic. I’ve got to say Solfis is really lacking of late. First he gets Viv into that mess with the herald, then he doesn’t catch onto the hunter’s treachery.

Young Youghurt

Tbh if this is supposed to be a more darker and grim version of earth, then the loss of less than 20% is a mild coffe. On earth wars, plagues and hunger easily wiped out as much as 90% of population at certain times in certain regions. Every fifth are just some rookie numbers. Bob is naive so kawaiiii Thank you for the chapter.

Mecanimus

Always risky to remove agency from the main character, but I did my best to keep it tolerable.
