BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA SHE WARNED THEM ALRIGHT! OH LORDY SHE WARNED EM!

Sardeed

Her finding some love is pleasant, a bit too fast but not like it is incomprehensible.

Hey, just a little bit of criticism. I think you're rushing the relationship between Viv and Sedgin. They just met, and they're acting super familiar with each other. I think it needs to slow down. That's all I got! Thanks for the chapter!

Marc Whipple

Good Gods above, if we can find any. The woman deserves a bit of happiness. Romance away.

Nicholas Grey

“the older man was quite more powerful than he let on” - this sounds very odd in English. Possibly “quite a bit more powerful” or “significantly more powerful”.

Karel Londin

“Alright, lay on the table, "SIdjin". Hmm. Naked.” Little miss in typing => Sidjin

Nicholas Grey

No, the ebook. Was reading it on my phone as I shopped. Due to circumstances, I spend a fair bit of time with no mobile connection, so I prefer to purchase the books rather than read on RR if I have the option. It was just such an amazing moment of absolute brazen steampunk bullshittery.

:) I get you want the story to move forwards, but it felt like rushing through the downtime a bit. Think a few small single sentence tweeks could really help, maybe even make the chapters shorter. The priest praying for a moment, Viv healing all she could for now, needing to think about how to proceed with the rest later. Viv clearly dislikes it, but but never mentioned it back then, most people in such societies are no doubt pissed off when it happens to them, only to think its fair when someone later legitimately owed them money. Some bad ideas are really persistent, then again, depends on what aspect of empire building you focus on. You can mostly ignore this, but kazar taking a stance on indentured servitude, the ransoming of prisoners etc, can make for interesting world building later. One idea for a side perspective which can be inserted later( book later), would be the noble investigating the claims of the villagers regarding cannibals. One approach is to not actually write how she teaches arthur, just mention she does. Amazing story regardless :)

Hmmm lots of those are unaddressed yes but I feel they would also slow down the story. I intend to talk about the healing spell in detail later, particularly because of the regrown confusion, but for slavery for example I feel like it’s not a major concern if we take into consideration the obvious hatred Viv has for the institution. I think the education of Arthur is important and I agree it’s been put on the side burner recently so I’ll make an effort.

Mecanimus

The audiobook?

Nicholas Grey

On the basis of this story, I have now purchased the first two volumes of Journey. The phrase”phlogiston nosinator” just made me laugh out loud in a supermarket…

fbt

just reread this, it's really nice. GJ!

A bit of constructive critizisms. There are a number of issues with this chapter and the previous one. The core of the problem i think is that they are rushed. The first is that sidjin has not even asked about arthur, it seems like a wizard would be very curious to speak to a friendly dragon given their unparalleled magic, albeit one still learning magic. The second issue is that you are breaking the previously established rules regarding the regrowth spell. It used to be that that the priest needed a visit from a good to learn their part of the spell. Simply having him ask for a moment to pray might be sufficient, but it feels like it should be mentioned. Initially the spell needed something to mirror or match. And for the meat to have been cleaned or at least butchered and the guts cleaned, just give the acolyte a nasty task to do before sidjin shreds it. Viv improving the spell over time makes sense, but mentioning this, and her limiting herself to healing those things she could right now makes more sense than the priest saying he is busy. In truth anyone who heals would know of dozens in desperate need, be it from empathy or his own failures, and more likely to ask her to stay than say he is busy for a week. The priest also starts talking to them twice. Another thing which has been bugging me for a long while is that viv didnt prohibit slavery, and in fact left such laws in place, before she left. A single declaration banning it refering to the fates of the unfortunates tsken from kazar would have been enough. Unless you intend having a slave market be a part of her return. Teaching a dragon capitalism, respecting property but not that slavery is wrong mght be worse than the teaching arthur that if you are unlucky burn a village. She often thinks trying to teach arthur morals and etiquette is a waste, but spends time teaching hygine despite complaints? Perhaps viv just isnt a particularily good person, but even someone callous and uncaring would make at least some effort. More to the point i think this stuff happens a bit off the page so to speak, but a few throwaway lines mentioning her actual efforts would be good. Another issue with sidjin, what exactly did viv say her stayus in kazar was? Did he miss that she is effectively queen, something whoch should have made a prince change his manners a bit, or did she hide it. Either way i kinda expected it to come up. Finally, having a third perspective is a bit overdue. Perhaps the captain, or a spy sent by the previous city working as a sailor. Playing with the marsh drake idea before arthur is too big might also be fun. Speaking of arthur, she seems to mix smothering protectiveness with ranging far, which is odd. Viv asking arthur about what happens when dragons grow up and eggs also seems like a good idea. Arthur may not know, but its an interesting topic. Anyways, good story as always.

Midjji

Arthur has gone from constantly guarding viv so she does not dissapear to viv thinking she might be ranging further, makes me wonder if viv no longer notices arthur sneakily guarding her.

Morog T Tiny

This reminds me of the picture in the red book... the old dnd basic set where the adventurers are sneaking through a dungeon and the dragon is sneaking, right there behind them. Arthur is going to give somebody a heart attack.

tibbish

IMO it was very well handled! Usually relationships and romance in these sorts of stories is ridiculous so its wonderful to see it pulled off properly for once.

Mecanimus

Her growth will not continue at the same speed for much longer, so there is that. And also, no one in history has ever ridden a dragon.

Mecanimus

I was honestly afraid of the kind of reception I'd get.

Cormac

I see. At what size will Arthur be rideable? Maybe when she is the size of a Shire Horse? Although I suppose a Percheron might be more appropriate given Viv's Frenchness.

InkyBusiness

Calamitous Romancé, just what we needed

Mecanimus

Oh yis I will fix all of those before the next upload.

Mecanimus

Length wise she's only slightly shorter. For now, she can rest her head on Viv's shoulder when both are standing. She has similar weight, however, but Arthur's build is sinuous.

Cormac

How big is Arthur at the moment? I'm picturing about the size of a wolf. Also, the more we learn of Sidjin the worse it get, poor lad. At least things are looking up for him now.

Gwendolyn Simmons-LaRose

"...even before she spotted the shanty spilling through the gates life fresh vomit." It should be like not life I assume.

Mecanimus

It has gendered nouns, yes. Easier that way. Don't overthink the language too much lol.

Mecanimus

Yeah it's my mistake. I'll fix it when I upload a corrected version.

volpol

There's something that's been bugging me and I finally figured out what. Sidjin says "You took me off guard". Shouldn't it be "caught me off guard"? "Take" makes me think of "unawares" so maybe they got merged?

Nicholas Grey

Just a minor niggle - there’s nothing in what Arthur *says* that indicates the archer is female. (That said, whatever language they’re communicating with might have gendered nouns)
