Some questions I forgot to ask in my rush... Enaluth is an 'EARTH' Shaper??? Why Earth and not Nyil?

Aapjuh

The ethics comity is part of the academy and the academy already acknowledged sidjin as an alumni, so why does he have to prove he is himself?

Mecanimus

All great points. I'd argue that Viv didn't sign the contract since it's just an option to reduce the time served for an servitude contract she would later sign. It is only binding to Elunath. Of course, it costs him very little and it completely to his advantage. I hope I will assuage your concerns in the next chapters.

Mecanimus

Those are all good points. I made the contact intentionaly shitty for reasons I hope will make sense much later.

Mecanimus

That's a great idea.

fbt

the mage they went to was "one of the" elemental mages who might help. Might have just been the closest, or maybe it was most likely to help, i forget. But he wasn't the only option, just the only one where we got details. IIRC.

tibbish

Yeah just needs a divider. Like this: ---------------------------------

Jeanean

The end was a little jumpy, going from scene to scene with barely any indication.

Robert Rosenthal

who is the other mage, this guy mentioned? is there someone else that is an option?

Dopplerdee

Honestly if she can figure it out on her own she should release it to the public to fuck with the ass.

David Brims

The complication is "dead within 2 years" and paths to elemental fusion are likely to take at least a year to develop. So she has a little bit of time in hand, but she can't sit on the contract indefinitely without potentially killing herself.

fbt

I assumed that was the part the title referenced...(snerk)

Melting Sky

When you have a revolver to your head and the hammer has already been released, it doesn't matter what is asked by the man who is the only one capable of stopping the bullet from spraying your brains up the wall in the next tenth of a second. He could offer terms a hundred times worse than this and most would wisely still take them. Viv is smart enough to know she is still far enough from the point when the hammer releases that she may be able to find some other way to stop her inevitably gruesome death, but that archmage is smart enough to know her odds of success are next to none. My guess is her best hope is finding something worth taking a hundred years off her contract before she signs it. Also, it is rather obvious the archmage would demand her immediate servitude while she is still alive since she could fail to achieve elementalhood and he would get nothing for his efforts. Viv is not the one holding any of the cards here other than the knowledge of some rare ancient runes she found.

Midjji

Think he would argue for a trade adter which the service to the meatbag is ended by a suitable meatbagender

Morog T Tiny

put together a list of potential knowledge, ask her family for suggestions( new family). see what all the knowledge put together would buy her. get the number to zero then jump.

Andrew

Thank you!

Michael T

I'm pretty sure Solfis is the *embodiment* of a powerful ancient artefact from a lost civilisation.

Enzo Elacqua

I agree that the contract having such ambiguous terms makes it impossible to teasingly sign, at least have the things she could offer be listed by value and how many years off the contract it would get her. If she has a direct thing she could just ask Solfis for some random knowledge he has in his data banks, and she could probably cut it down to at least only a couple years. I’m sure she can’t completely get rid of it because plot, but still I can’t see her reasonably signing this

Young Youghurt

Sadly no glorious defenestrations in this world. Cries in Bohemian.

Midjji

Thinking on contracts a bit more, the two parts critical which are always missing is the conflict resolution mechanism, and the knowledge of local legal system and practice along with spheres of enforcement, a lawer can help with the latter. The conflict court in particular is crucial. Making that part magic would be risky for the more powerfult part for no gain. If the court/judge and enforcer is the more powerful part, then the contract is pointless and uneccessary. If the court/ judge and enforcer are third parts as is irl, you can get interesting conflicts and politics and worldbuilding, but also potentially meaningful useful contract enforcement. Simply stating that the court and enforcement is that of helock means the contract can be both meaningful and relevant and would resolve this. Wont mean its fair, wont mean its easier to break, but makes it possible to make for good writing. Though having prepared the ground by saying they are above the law is then problematic and would require the existence of a court which he would have to follow, otherwise its pointless or a slaver contract again. Not that these thing dont happen irl slave contracts in the us were enforced untill late 1920. But she is knowledgeable enough she wouldnt let it happen to her.

Midjji

Writers always do contracts like shit, usually because they havent ever actually worked with then. Writers also get taken advantage of by bad contracts too, but if she is smart enough to go to a lawer, then thwt lawer would tell her even if you die without this, dont sign. Its a bad joke of a contract. A even slightly pessimistic intrepetation makes it obvious that this means losing the two years she has left for what is possibly no gain at all. Making it magic, beyond beeing able to verify the parts is even worse. No sane lawer would tell her to even consider it, every lawer would tell her we can negotiate it for you for a fee. Its also retarded that someone who offers such terms would be unwilling to spend the few days of extra effort it takes to write a better one. Usually by hireing someone to take care of it for them, which is cheap and easy relative to his wealth. So its just bad writing. Him offering it without putting terms in a contract i could buy, after all he can enforce it himself, but with one, nah its just bad.

David Brims

Might be worth asking Solfis his opinion on that contract, as well. His knowledge is esoteric but deep, he'd know if a better option was at all likely.

Midjji

Yeah asking solfis should be the first step, the other girls and tod the second, i really hope the contract is only magic in the sense it verifies who signed it and not in any way force the signee to comply, as the latter is a horrible story device which always forces stupidity and bad writing. Signing such a contract without explicitly listing terms of service work expectation, or them discussing it more, and the value of the items and potential trades is really dumb. Its astonishingly dumb as he could simply claim service is staying and therefore not even be able to find new stuff or that all brought is near worthless. Contract magic is almost universally a bad idea for stories, it is also almost universally uneccecary in story, u less it both allows for exploitation and is intended to be used so, and then the question becomes, is the contract written out, and protagonist and idiot, or is it implicit and safeguards and conditions written in, and hence exploits and actual contract magic not needed. Its also so astonishingly pointless when one or both parts are magically powerful and long lived. Simple agreement and the implicit threat is generally better. So and so many significant favors might be better too. No need for magic compliance on favors either as for any significant power, beeing known to break your word or flake on favors is a very bad thing on its own.

BramBora

I suppose window throwing would be rather ineffective in this case

Young Youghurt

Is there a roadblock on your journey? Don't hesitate and call Solfis Solutions immediately! For lowly price of your soul and eternal servitude we guarantee you nothing will stand in your way! Seriously I wonder if Solfis could remember location of some priceless artifact in some buried treasury or something.

MrAcerulez

Thanks for the chapter and welcome back

Young Youghurt

That would be little harsh, I think. Much better solution, that would spare the masses, seems to just chop heads off the leaders a la resistance style.

Leviathon251

Thanks, must have just been me. With how long he implied it could take she's taking a bit of a risk in putting it off. Hopefully she'll be fine.

Biomass

Riding this dick is a medical procedure, please leave.

Melting Sky

She has not signed the contract and is viewing it as a last resort if she can't come up with something better in the meantime. The clause discussing a decrease in her indenture was just an addendum to the contract that would take effect, were she to sign it.

Cormac

The more I read about Helock and the people in it, the more I think it could do with a healthy dose of cleansing dragonfire.

Leviathon251

Not sure if it's just that I'm a bit tired, but the dialogue regarding the contract felt a little vague and disjointed. Not sure if she signed it yet? They were already discussing lessening her servitude but then they took it to a lawyer thanks for the chapter. 😁
