Is there no progress in the Ascender path ? Haven't seen any for ages. Or maybe the System has changed now ?

ShotoGun

“ Defacemed” needs spacing.

Midjji

The spymaster really messed up by not even mentioning solar. He might not know much, but solar ruled in viva place before azar, most would assume he is undisputedly loyal to her, and given he was second in damaging the avatar only to viv, he is perhaps among the most powerful champions on param.

Mecanimus

Yes but not soon.

StarWolf

except for New Harrak, and they have not proven avaricious even by imperial standards. The use of the work avaricious does not make sense in the sentence. I would use the word cheap instead, that actually makes sense.

Gremlin

Interestingly my 13y old started his introductory job today and Im happy for him. I did the same as him and worked since. It was good experience and has had no deleterious effect on my education. Admittedly not a coal mine.

BramBora

So true. Makes you think that even a easier chapter has several points many - even those of relatively similar focus - lack in their entire works

Mark

Will we get time skips in Bob like there were in Journey?

Mark

Years are longer on Nyil as well. I think 13 was around 14 - 15 Earth years.

Judgement has said that if a dragon gets involved in human affairs then he will not interfere

Alex

The main issues is they still think Arthur will/does follow general Draconic behavior, meaning that as long as Humans stay out of Dragon affairs they I turn will stay out of Human affairs.... unfortunately as of right now we have no idea if Viv's death would cause Arthur to be heir or if Judgement would force the issue of no interfere and make Arthur leave Harrak in this scenario...

Their current wood supply is in a hostile magic forest that can easily kill people. Even strong ones. So there is some serious issues there to say the least. Charcoal is in some situations a decent soil amendment but its far from a cure all. Not all soil is the same (and not all wood is the same either, some are worse than you'd think for horticultural charcoal) so you can't go expecting charcoal to go working miracles and compete with modern fertilizers outside of some very niche scenarios. On top of that you can't keep adding it to the soil over and over. It can actually be harmful if you do that. Its at best a slow release low grade fertilizer that is used sparingly for most soils and plants. Ultimately if she wants to industrialize charcoal is a stepping stone. She'll need coal. And then natural gas or oil. They burn hotter and cleaner than charcoal and there are certain chemical processes which require that for mass production.

Learning how to hammer or bend 1 or 2 spots on 1 or 2 items isn't much of a education. That is the sort've thing a person would be doing in a human powered assembly line. It won't be anything like a apprenticeship. After all the whole point of such a operation is to break down the manufacture of a given item into a bunch of simple steps such that a machine, or uneducated unskilled kid in this case, can do it.

Shane Burns

Right? Anyone that goes that route should be introduced to the "suicide by dragon" method of death..

Bum-Sama

Good chappie. Geopolitical and socioeconomic growth, mixed with slice of life and a sense of harrak from likely their only possible rival. Excellent.

jcox

Have the people plotting Viv's death considered that the Harrakan heir is a freaking Dragon? Because that would factor into my calculations.

M. Gunnarsson

On one hand I agree about their education, but on the other hand this IS an education. This likely isn't going to be a random side job they'll replace later, but rather an entry into blacksmith or crafting professions. Apprentices often learned their trade by doing the menial and repetitive tasks first. Now, how that'd play out with Nyil politics I can't say, and there's definitely a danger of children being used as exploitable labor. But that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.

M. Gunnarsson

They have an unlimited supply of wood. That's crazy. Charcoal is going to be very useful for industrializing anything and it is also one of the best soil amendments out there (plant nerds who know what they're doing with bio-charcoal can compete with modern fertilizer). And she has an UNLIMITED SUPPLY? She really should set up massive charcoal kilns as the first step of industrializing and then export the stuff to make up the production costs. She's not the only one in Param with access to a lot of wood, but charcoal is used for heating and multiple crafts. IRL, people have (and still do) razed entire forests to make charcoal. There's going to be a market.

I worked when I was 11 (paper route) and it sucked big time. Had around 130 homes on my route which doesn't sound like much but its a lot for 1 kid on a bike. Sundays were the worst. My take home pay was around $150 or so a week. This was a long time ago but even back then that was lousy pay for getting up at 3:30-4am every day to sling papers before going to school. I had no choice though since my mom got a divorce and we were poor. Did what I had to, and she did too (worked 2-3 jobs to make ends meet) but I sure didn't like it and you're a total fool if you think you would too. The only jobs you can get pay crap and require a fair amount of time and effort at that age. I'd expect working in a grungy medevial-ish factory doing repetitive manual drudge labor would be worse of course. Yeah its a medevial-ish society so they'll look at things different but that doesn't make it good or alright. Especially since Viv knows better. Also as far as improving society goes putting those kids into schools, while difficult at first, will pay massive dividends in the long run. I can tell you my grades definitely suffered when I was working at 11 and when I got a job working retail later as well as junior in high school. People would always say working at that age teaches you important life lessons or some such garbage but the only thing I learned was that work sucks and I can't wait for retirement.

Probably farmland and natural resources. Without modern fertilizers and insecticides getting good crop yields is pretty hard so famines were fairly common. They'll need lots of wood, coal, and iron if they're going to industrialize too. Magic can help here but without lots of specific knowledge (which I doubt Viv has) it'll help less than you might think.

NethanielShade

Lots of people freaking out about child labor here. Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I think 13 is a nice age to start working, especially in a less-modern situation. When I was 13/14 I wanted to work to gain money for stuff. Most jobs today don’t allow under 16, with very few exceptions for 15 year olds.

Winny

Thanks for the chappy. With their population growing and viv on the cusp of creating industry i wonder what other strategic resources they can reclaim from the deadlands.

Thomas Payne

Great chapter. I like the peace. Can we get a sense of what the next step is for her as a mage? I’m loving where she is now, but we looked forward to being elemental for a very long time before it happened.

ikbenbarry

I now need to see the interaction between that fearless guard and brick. their meeting will be legendary and by god do I ship it.

Han Pol

well I think the most common is getting hit by artillery, by the opposing infantry, some of that does not really apply here as the doctrine and techniques is different. But very few battles that are somewhat exciting have casualty ratios of of less than 50-1 that is usually only happening by total technological and tactical domination. Anglo Sansibar war. Or the first few wars against native americans by spain. I think the germans had 1large scale battle with the soviets were the ratio was somewhat similar. (even if it may have cost them other more strategically important objectives.)

tibbish

Typical casualty rates in old style hand to hand fighting armies was typically around 4-6% if you go by the Roman numbers. They actually kept pretty good numbers on this for wage purposes so the data is fairly solid believe it or not. Instances of much higher rates did occur but they're the outliers and were usually under strange circumstances.

Henrik T.

At the same time the other extreme is also fairly common. Armies losing 20% of their men in battle. Or the old trope of 50% of new adventurers die in a year. Why would anyone take the job with such casualties? The term decimate literally referes to losing 10% and being decimated is an indication of stuff going horribly wrong, not the norm. This story manages a balance both in this battle and against the prince.

Morog T Tiny

one of the more common ways to die in the modern military is crushed by a truck.

Jeanean

I think the greatest thing about this chapter is the fact that there was a war, and people in Viv's army actually died. I know, it sounds strange. BUT! For some reason, far too many authors seem to think that winning WITHOUT LOSING A SINGLE SOLDIER is something completely normal. But, no, it makes absolutely no fucking sense. A single lucky arrow or stone throw can kill a person, be it in a realistic setting or fantasy land. And, sure, in a fight between two groups with 10 people each, if one of them absolutely dominates, it makes sense that one wide wins without any losses. But when its 100 people per group? 1000? Fantasy-sized armies of millions of soldiers? Sooner or later, one guy is gonna get that lucky throw. Or hell, even IF one side has some kind of Superpower that spreads all damage between all soldiers, making it so that one has to hurt the entire army, or do nothing at all. ONE GUY WILL DIE! MAybe not on the battlefield, but simply because he was an idiot and wasn't careful enough handling the super dangerous magical weapons! Or maybe he slipped, and drowned in the latrine pit! That is just what happens during war, during any largescale event involving lots of people and even more weapons. Rant over...

I cannot wait for people's reactions when Solfis -- already a menace -- gets beefed up again
