pas a flight of stairs <= err... past?

the next bold <= bolt

I'm pretty sure crossbows have a noticeable recoil, if a lot less than the augs guns nessa uses.

Clifton

That's an argument against it being targeted to the Aszhii - it allowed one to live. If it was designed to kill them it would explicitly look for them and kill them. I doubt you'd have time to permit one access.

Anon.

Manipulation does have two meanings, and she followed one of them perfectly!

David Morrison

Typo. She wore exquisitely maid robes ==> She wore exquisitely made robes... Or.. She wore exquisite maid robes

An example of something that actually has no recoil. Rockets don't have recoil because they're self propelled. Any thing that you're propelling will have recoil, including bows of all types, even throwing a rock. Its just less than guns, cause way less force; when was the last time you saw an arrow or bolt break the sound barrier? Not an issue in our world, but, i can see people in yours having bows and crossbows with enough power that recoil becomes not only relevant, but a problem. A bow shooting an arrow at bullet speeds would have far more recoil than a gun, because of the mass difference of the projectile.

Aifhwinx

yeah, I do not think that it was created for Shinran so much as Shinran's mana found it when he asked it for help getting stronger. the place is abandoned, looks to be erroring, and looks like it was able to support vastly more people of varying species. @clifton I don't think Aszhii are generally world-enders, but they do get absurdly powerful. as is basically nobody on Earth could actually stop Seth if he decided to go kill everyone. People plan in response to fears even if they are unfounded ones, so it's plenty reasonable that some civilization learned about Aszhii, and built a training facility to defeat them, something that might actually motivate the Aszhii to work together and end them. a large part of why I think the facility was built to help defeat Aszhii is because it was able to recognise Nestra, had a name for her species, and either wanted to kill or at least not provide training to her until Shinran overrode it.

closeded

Bonus points if it gets tied in to the "whore bike."

DM

This was SO good

Enif

The facility is abandoned. I'm pretty sure it wasn't made for Shinran so much as his power let him find it. I don't think there's anyone left of that civilization anymore.

Drakenclaw

I did also a bit of additional research and I think there are several factors why crossbows usually don't really kick that hard. 1. The energy imparted onto the projectile is far less than with a gun. This also means far less energy imparted backward onto the crossbow. 2. The crossbows are usually build heavier and thus have more inertia that absorbs more of the recoil. 3. The acceleration is more gradually than the instant explosion of gunpowder. A lot depends on the construction of the crossbow. But a heavier crossbow with a hefty arm can definitely get a noticeable kick. Bows are different. They truly do not have a recoil, because the act of the archer holding the bow under tension is basically already the recoil. Definitely a pretty interesting and complex physics problem though.

L Pedersen

Hypothetically speaking, if you're making drugs, is it correct to like your customers or despise them?

Mecanimus

I'll make the edits... eventually.

Mecanimus

The recoil of crossbow is negligible according to Google. Probably because it's a string moving through the air and not has being forced out of a barrel.

Mecanimus

Yes. She also mentions going to such parties back when she had potential.

Mecanimus

Through manipulation of the neck area.

Mecanimus

I was a bit concerned but it's all part of the scope.

Mecanimus

Just a little late sry.

Bum-Sama

Good chappie. Twin battle maniacs. Gotta love em, or hate them if your name is Ragnarok.

Clifton

The Aszhii are, or seem, pretty individualistic. I doubt they're world enders, more likely to hunt interesting things and be considered a danger but an isolated one. Which raises the idea of another group that requires this kind of response.

Clifton

Certainly not much compared to the window maker.

Clifton

Flat maybe?

Andrew K

Considering the ending there, hoping we eventually get some sort of humorous significant situation caused by someone eventually noticing that Nestra and Shinran are really frequently disappearing together at the same time, coming to the "obvious" conclusion about their relationship, then gossiping about it otherwise acting on that conclusion in some way that bothers Nestra for a while (particularly given she can't just explain what's really going on to clear it up).

RonGAR

If your guess is right and another High sentient civilization made this for Shinran, then I would be worried about all the data they are collecting on Thresholds and Earths champions. #Justsaying #JustThinkingAloud

Pete Magnuson

Don't portals usually have an opaque surface? Seeing the world before you get pulled through is weird

Leviathon251

Great chapter! I'm actually beginning to like Shinran. Maybe him and Ragnerock can be firemds?

Aifhwinx

ragnarok hired a second shinran to kill shinran if it proved necessary. man talk about bad luck. the chapter overall though has a lot of interesting suggestions, I am deeply curious as to who built that training facility. I suspect that given how it reacted towards Nestra that it was created by some group or civilization which was similarly skilled with technology as humans (though likely further along in its development) which became aware of the Aszhii and decided to help any species become able to combat them. A bit more guessing, but i'd bet that they became quite good at it, and the Aszhii wiped them out, i know Nestra was wondering not too long ago what it would look like if her species was united against a common foe, and this seems like a remnant of such a foe.

Mantarok1205

I assumed that from Nestra's perspective, crossbows feel like they have no recoil.

Tehd11

Baselines can't enter portals I think

M. Lampi

access to the flag tower at the center of the main building pas a flight of stairs. ==> access to the flag tower at the center of the main building past a flight of stairs.

M. Lampi

A fiery conflagration engulfed the canon and all those ==> A fiery conflagration engulfed the cannon and all those

even as the canon servants screeched in alarm. ==> even as the cannon servants screeched in alarm.

M. Lampi

Still stinged a bit. ==> Still stung a bit.

Erik Hansen

Nestra made a comment about it feeling like it was a simulation still, alongside the power she gets being "undirected mana" instead of the normal focused kind. It's probably fine?

Jamarr

I don't understand what Nezrha was trying to prove by walking thought the portal in her human mask.

NoReTr3aT

Hated the wait, but was worth it. Good chappy. She really needs a better sword.

NoReTr3aT

Right in my vein.

Andrew

Thank you!

Manlor

Another battle maniac!

Drakenclaw

Thanks for the chapter. "Crossbows didn’t have recoil, dammit!" They totally do. Usually not as much as a gun, yes. They are often build heavier than a gun, which absorbs more of the recoil, but they totally have it. If you throw something in one direction, you get pushed in the other. Always. Edit: Though with crossbows, depending on the build, you can also have a forward recoil.

InLucidReverie

What is "they had almost flare faces" supposed to mean? Typo? Also, crossbows totally do have recoil- would be better to say 'the same recoil'

Young Youghurt

"There was also caviar from the Black Sea. Shit, Nestra didn’t even know they still made some!" This line sounds more like Ariane after her 100 years or so than young Nestra (in her measly late twenties or so). She was born after the apocalypse and left her luxurious life in her late teens no? It's minor inconsequential thing I just find an image of teen Nestra shoving fists full of caviar in her maw at some pompous gala as my personal explanation for why she is such a caviar connoisseur funny. No wonder she is such a fancy glutton (crying in student 0.60 € instant noodle soup );

RonGAR

Ahhh.... Awesome chapter. Long and Meaty with details. Nice cuts between segments. Great job. Worthy of a reread.

Oblique

Thanks for the chappie! Oh no, nezhra's going to be a bad influence on shinran. Edit: I can imagine it now, nezhra pulling up in the pink muscle car whilst shinran is meditating. Get in loser, we're going raiding!

Tehd11

I'd say she aced the manipulation task. The woman was out of the tent.

LenoraeKB

At least Nezhra isnt a murder hobo. Would a murder hobo have AVERAGE leadership? I think not. Bow before Nezhra, Queen of Leadership!

Enif

Holy cow you really kicked it up a notch with this chapter. Introducing so many things and possibilities.

Jackjargon

Thank you for the meal! Uh-oh found the big guys crazy! This is why Ragnarock wants him dead he a murder hobo! Also I think part of the simulation is true which is scarry and bad if they are hopping into other worlds and killing randomly they are the world incursions! It could be baaaaaad

L Pedersen

MY FIX!

WarStrider72

Thanks for the chapter boss!
