Edward Ravenbear

Lot of words in there no one uses anymore. Not that big of a deal. And it's fiction.

Sebastian Lachs

It's Fräulein. Also, it's an antiquated term that nobody uses anymore.

Halfcrzy

This whole thing trying to change yourself for your parents acceptance still doesn't sit well with me. If you were tossed aside once, it will happen again. Nestra is trying to hard for that acceptance.

ImYou

Aszhii sound like the sayins if this universe

lenkite

Should have really confirmed that the Hitman really died. Don't think C-rank can die from fall damage.

Raven

It could also be interpreted as all assassin gleams are shit in her opinion, maybe a raider thing, maybe a first gen thing, or honor code...

elijah pickett

Exactly! He knows she's better than him.

Nathan Ganesan

He's also jealous of her cause she was the fencing prodigy.

elijah pickett

Ulysses is a shit. He got trained and stuff, supported in every way as well. He just wasn't happy she wanted to be more than a thing to be protected. I really hope she brutally decks him at some point and internalizes she is not a parasite, but family. Even weird messes up alien family.

Andrew Pilavachi

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing

Clifton

So, it's just occurred to me, is there an approved pronunciation for Clecle? I was reading it as Clekle, but it could also be Cle-cle. Or something I haven't noticed yet.

Aifhwinx

it's kinda prevalent. lot of assholes amongst the cast, including nestra admittedly, but he was especially petty there, and taking it out on the wrong person

Scott, just Scott

Did Claire kill the b-ranked gleams? Later, she said, “those assassin gleams ain’t shit.” Current tense implies they are still alive.

Kemizle

I’m rereading when Nestra first when to the family party and boy is her brother a dick

ItWasIDIO!!

Na don't wanna get burnt out on Mecanimus's writing style reading this one is kinda pushing it but Bob's getting too heavy to sustain itself & still be fun Nestra still has its charm

Bum-Sama

Ah the memes. Love it.

Biomass

Go read the vampire book it's excellent.

AntiClimax she her

I don't understand your comment. It feels like a non sequitur. Mazingwe is in the know and currently an ally. As far as how he reacted when he found out? Way better than Claire, if not completely supportive. Her well being was second only to his obligation to humankind, and really just wanted to take her to Shinran, knowing that he was unlikely to hurt her. It would have interfered with her freedom and relationships, which is when Sereth stepped in. And Mazingwe stepped between them to protect her. Mazingwe and Shinran's current belief that she's a likely benefit to humankind puts him firmly in her corner now. Calling out that Shinran knows attests to her not being a threat, but calling out that Mazingwe knows attests to the fact that she's the same person. It's not terribly surprising he wasn't on the tip of her tongue in this situation, especially if he's not known to the Palladians. But it still surprised me, because i thought her family knew she had a high profile doctor, and she was desperate to convince Claire that she was the same Nestra. Mazingwe is pretty amazing, imo, even if I do imagine him as a loporit every time i say his name in my head.

ItWasIDIO!!

Well written fun it almost has me going to read the vampire book *almost*

NoReTr3aT

To be fair, Mazingwe needed Nestras brother to polity tell him to not act against her at first.

NoReTr3aT

Ok then, but yes.

Owen Taylor

THIS STUFF IS LIKE DRUGS CONSUMED DIRECTLY THROUGH THE TWO FLESHY ORBS SITUATED ON MY FACE. thank you.

M. Lampi

After a few couple minutes, Nestra hanged up. ==> After a few couple minutes, Nestra hung up.

AntiClimax she her

Pretty sure just a random woman who's not quite dead among the corpses left behind from their massacre of the train compartment. I think the confusion may be from bodies never being explicitly mentioned, only implied by the gunshots and the enemy gleam looking through them to find the survivor to use as leverage against Nestra. Edit: it's also a little strange that she helps the dragoon and not the other survivor.

Clifton

There was an unconscious woman (according to the assassin), was this the woman who died from an earlier edit?

wd40bomber7

Ugh it doesn't help that every chapter is AMAZING. I can't wait for the next chapter.

c c

Def agree with the other fears being justified

c c

Sorry, I was specifically referring to Nestra's thought that "the family's love for a cuckoo is a lie" but it seems like Claire's love for the cuckoo was genuine, so long as it was the same cuckoo she's known all along and not some horrible thing that killed Nestra recently

Clifton

I thought the references were to the coffee - espresso being a way of preparing it.

Clifton

I'd argue they were justified since she came very close to death.

Ronny Cook

Well, they THOUGHT they were going against one B-class raider, without equipment, who had recently recovered from serious injuries, and one mundane. They were sort of right about CleCle but without factoring in, well, that she's a Palladian. And completely ignorant that Nestra is a dimension-hopping superpowered alien used to surviving solo against high-powered threats and lent the customised training facilities of an A-class gleam. Sadly what information they now retain now is in the form of a thin paste of grey matter and assorted splash marks.

Andrew K

Claire certainly has an interesting view at the end there about how to approach having a place in history. Also, I was thinking after last chapter that she would feel the need for some rebound rebellion after having to act respectable, but now that the situation is impacted by the Nestra reveal and the stress of being on high alert for days first (plus needing to deal with local law enforcement trying to provide protection she turned down), wonder if there's going to be a crazy and not-so-legal aunt-niece raid for stress relief (read: mass slaughter) purposes in the not so distant future.

SirSteveX

This stuff is crack. As soon as I see there's a chapter I drop whatever I'm doing because I've got to read it immediately

Mantarok1205

Jolly good!

Adam Davies

Clecle is my favourite.

AntiClimax she her

International treaties need to be considered. The organization likely has nothing to fear from Threshold, so long as they stay out of Pacifica. OTOH, Threshold is just begging for excuses to extend their reach over their subcontinent. Any enclave ties to this crime family would work nicely.

AntiClimax she her

And apropos of nothing.... Am I the only one who imagined the dragoons wearing FF dragoon armor?

AntiClimax she her

I'm surprised she didn't tell Aunt Claire that her Dr, Mazingwe, knows. Do the Palladians not know a first gen B-Class raider is Nestra's practitioner?

AntiClimax she her

Ovaltine in the US is too sweet now. I don't know when Nestle changed the formula (they've owned it in US since 2007), but it's not near as good anymore. I still get it because it's better than Qwik, but it makes me sad. I hear European Ovaltine is closer to the original.

AntiClimax she her

Alas, poor Yorick...

AntiClimax she her

Or, alternately have allies with her when she comes out, such as Vallerian, Camile, Mazingwe, Claire, and maybe even Shinran. Maybe invite them to the dr office to talk about the results of some testing, or some such. Or have Shinran invite them to his private gym? Of course that would require letting Shinran know who she is. I understand wanting to wait... But it is likely to go so much better if she can come out in a controlled situation, than having it come out during a crisis as just happened --- regardless of the outcome. It would be even better if she could be B class as well, from a personal defense perspective. It's a balance, but apart from her brother, who's likely afraid of losing his current golden child status and being kicked back into scapegoat along with whatever other problems he has with Nestra (inferiority complex?), she's already in a strong enough position that it could do more damage to wait. I'm guessing she will wait, though, because she wants to experience being her parents' child first. And just shear terror, of course.

Hussar L

But Nestra has blood relation with her Mom. Even though her alien genes are dominant over her human genes. I say they are related

Hussar L

Not yet. She should get strong enough to stand against 2 violent 1st gen gleams before eventual reveal. This incident proves it, she nearly died.

Cormac

And Cadbury has gone to shite too under Mondelez ownership.

Cormac

No, no - he was wearing an actual hamlet on his head. Clearly.

RonGAR

@BurnNote True true, but since no one is in 'immediate' danger, I doubt Threshold would act. Unless they plan on hunting down this group of slavers as a 'training' exercise or something.

Henrik T.

The reason why now is not the time is because she likely won't have the time to flee. If either of her parents has a worse reaction than her aunt then she is dead before she has a chance to flee or explain and both her parents have pretty good reasons to be more upset than her aunt because of no blood relation and rape respectively. The best time to fess up is when she becomes b rank at which point she'll be sturdy enough to tank the gut reaction and talk it out.

LenoraeKB

Mondelez buying out Marabou and Freya chocolates in Sweden and Norway still makes me sad. Just not remotely the same as they used to be

Manlor

She's the cool aunt for real.

BurnNote

They also made an enemy out of threshold.

RonGAR

I hope they check the plane for bombs before take off. Cuz in space No one can hear you scream.

Julia Kent

That reaction is so real. Explosively violent the second you tell them then the fucking nerve to ask why you didn't tell them sooner. Legitimately something I and many other queer people have gone through. Very good characterization.

Erik Hansen

to be fair to Nestra, only Stibbs and Gorge were intentional reveals.

Dietz

Eh, Ulysses said earlier that the only reason he dislikes her is that she fled. Obviously he didn't like being second fiddle, but he, at least for now, seems to care mostly about family. And apparently nestra leaving hurt them something terrible.

Dietz

Honestly, Now's the Time. Nestra should just ride the trauma train and get it out in the open. Better than getting comfy with some people knowing, and then being forced to flee when someone has a bad reaction.

Unwillingmainer

As always, the universe gives nothing good to Nestra without a big old dollop of pain and heartache to go along with it. Got a core, but also had to deal with an assassination attempt and telling her aunt the truth. With one more person knowing the truth, one who isn't the best with secrets, how long before the rest of her family knows? If it goes about the same as with Aunt Claire than it will be a success, but I don't see it going well.

RonGAR

Claire just got two more B class cores and one C class, for her hospital #Justsaying

Vincebourgh

Love it when some random mooks think they're the big bad and get a heaping load of crushing reality right to their dome. In this case it was a pillar with the speed of a moving bullet train.

Bear Minimum

Good stuff. "The guy hadn’t taken his dragoon hamlet off" - should be helmet. "and I will be there soon, promised,”" - promise

Adspartan

Nestra slapped them with a big uno reverse card, they weren't ready :p

Enif

Yay! One step closer to having her whole family onboard with her secret.

c c

Ulysses final boss? Looking forward to his arc.

c c

I ignored my fluids lecture for this. So good. AAAAAAAAAA I'm so glad you took it this direction. It would be sad if her fears were justified with Aunt Claire and there's so many more interesting reactions to come now.

Specter

Thank you! If helpful: Iincursion -> incursion gone to the clinique -> clinic Nestra hanged up -> hung up

Young Youghurt

Happy the demon came out of the bag. Those slaving idiots don't know when to stop. I understand for legal reason they cannot be mentioned but repeated mentions of nespresos and unspecified coffees reminded me of those dystopian corpo m*****f*****s Nestlé. Sometimes fiction can be only a pale imitation of our grim reality. (Seriously though those guys are the worst. They are like chocozombies. Either them or mondeles come to your country buy out every region specific snack then change it's recipe to be cheaper then they mark up prices and there is nothing to be done because they are everywhere. I have resigned on issues like housing or climate just give me back my childhood snacks 😭. *Cries in crazy* Anyway thanks for showing up at my tedtalk.)

Mundane

I am highly amused that the criminals plan almost worked not because they were more powerful but because the B class attackers were just competent enough to look like a threat but incompetent enough not to know they stood zero chance.

Jacob

Ragnarok still thinks she just has a transformation power that her family helped train in secret

Leviathon251

Woo woooo. I'm both happy and sad. I think there could have been a great solo arc if you could finingle Nestra escaping somehow if things went bad but this was equally satisfying. Thanks for the chapter!

Azra

I didn't think it was possible to love Aunt Clecle more, but i was obviously wrong !

RonGAR

GREAT chapter worth the wait. -------------- Assassination: I thought for a second my prediction from 2 chapters back came through. I thought, "The Doctor/Director is a traitor, trying to increase his 17% stock position to 100% and full owner", theory was coming to fruition. Then I thought it was the "Center of Magical Studies", especially when they mentioned to "keep recording''. I thought they were going to try to get their 'data' the hard way. But surprise, not really surprise, it was the kidnappers. Which makes sense for an organization like that. Looks like the Palladians will have to tie up this loose end or else never be able to go anywhere outside of Threshold. But I assume this group also made an enemy of Switzerland and that should have some consequences too. Im sure the Swiss could hire/contract one or two hundred mercenary teams to teach this organization 'respect'. ------------------ Love love love the family reaction. Loooveed it. So happy for them. And Ulysses was right, she is a parasite. A Parasite on all the 'attention' he wants for himself. LOLOL Dude wants to be the 'favored' child soooo badly. That ship has sailed buddy! Well, he is one person I know for sure can never know the truth. ------------------ Speaking of, ''In the Know'', Hmmm, I wonder how upset Claire is going to be once she finds out Dr. Magzinwe, Verlerian, Stibbs, Shinran, Gorge, and Ragnarok, are all 'in the know'? Some hurt feeling on the way for sure. ------------ Thanks for the chapter!!! It was worth the wait. Looks like we are back on a Wednesday delivery schedule or is this one just late?

Nc100

Thanks for the Chapter :)

AgentFransis

I think another family trip is in order.

JHD

Thanks for the chapter.

The Bandersnatch

I dunno why, but "xenoniece" absolutely sent me

Leo Fehr

Tftc and thanks for mentioning Uetliberg :)

Cormac

This is some good stuff. And not the direction I thought this would go at all. I never thought there would be real fallout from the Claire rescue. You spelled train brakes as "breaks" at one point.

WarStrider72

Thanks for the chapter boss
