A bit later, they were politely accosted by a group of three raiders in civilian clothes a bit later, all C-class and quite strong, -> Only need one "a bit later" if he were an Aszhii, the Scorful Crescent -> Scornful tftc

I think everyone is overthinking it. Allfather was described as a war criminal and major asshole. He was clearly the leader of a human/gleam trafficking network. There's no indication whatsoever that he or his network had any notion that she was anything but what she represents: a baseline. Sereth just removed the head of the snake and stopped the escalating confrontation.

Smaug

The problem with that is that usually when two cultures with vastly different levels of development/power meet, the weaker culture usually gets fucked over. Azshii are just so far above humanity power-wise that the best they can hope is Azshii putting them in some kind of "nature preserve" category to have access to convenience technologies.

Smaug

I mean the guy has internalized that he hates Nestra for distancing from the family. Maybe he's just self-aware enough to not punish what he said he wanted.

Angus Losier

There's been many, many references to Nestra's human tendency to pack bond with anything. I don't think the penny has dropped yet for Sereth that this means that the usual antagonistic reaction to Azshii revelations isn't a guarantee, especially given that it's a guarantee that Aunt Clecle will have none of that nonsense. I mean, once you get past the difference in appearance, Azshii are clearly people, not monsters, and mostly loners. Humans need allies, and have lots and lots of experience with dealing with xenophobia among themselves. The lessons of why xenophobia is bad and a weakness extend to nonhuman people in a straightforward manner.

Smaug

Rip Allfather, we hardly knew ye.

MrrC

I think once Seth knew that there was a hit that forced her to reveal her true self; he decided to cut the corruption starting from the top......and the walkers and bombs were new threats that were likely planned and that he decided to prevent

DAK

“He needs a woman and needs to start his own family.” Could be, could be. But why do we have to do that to the poor hypothetical woman?

Aifhwinx

as an ostensibly freshly awakened gleam ran face-first into a fight with an unknown number of assailants of unknown ability when she didn't have to at all. that's careless of her secrecy and life, especially when her mask is still so far from being the biggest fish in the pond. she's been showing signs of not valuing that secret as much as she probably should be, at her current strength, for a little bit, but that's the biggest lapse. she was quite lucky the assault was by c-ranks, would only have taken one moderately experienced b-rank not handicapping themself to kill her

Sgt. Tibs

Ulysses is all over the place! Make up your mind asshole!

TheLunaticCo

@paradox Nice profile pic!

SerIcouldntcareless

Sadly not :/

Clifton

My impression wasn't that he was a member but rather that he overheard her reveal to her aunt. Thus, he needed to go. Could be wrong though, with the walker comment.

Mecanimus

Should be fixed now

Mecanimus

Hmm. You make a good point for enhanced senses although she was already better than baselines. I should still show it more.

Denva

I mean of course gleams can be produced by baselines. How did gleams come to be if not from baselines. It's just that baselines are slowly going extinct.

Mecanimus

Let’s close the discussion here. I think the other commenters have given a proper response but I’ll also add that she says the same thing when she goes to the Sword Enclave: it’s mostly Vietnamese people with a few foreigners. So. Yeah. Think more of her as someone who’s never traveled before and gets amazed by everything from snow to ethnic composition to lack of static defenses to really old buildings. There is no judgment, only the experience of another place.

Mecanimus

What the other commenter said. She should have stayed back with the armed soldiers instead of venturing forth with the overconfident dragoon. It was her foolish decision to go on to try and save people when she had no data and no weapons. It was a decision made with a good heart but ultimately a stupid one. That said, he does admit he’s being harsh.

Aifhwinx

allfather seeking retribution against the Palladians: not her fault. Nestra going into combat with assailants of unknown power and number which required her to drop her mask to live, leading to her aunt discovering her? that is careless. He does seem to be attributing causation from one to the other when it mostly seems to be correlation. allfather was sending goons no matter what, engaging them when she didn't have to was the mistake (in terms of maintaining secrecy at least). it's also possible allfather learned what she is, but we aren't told as such

sarvashaktimaan

I must say, people calling everything racism nowadays is really annoying. It really breaks the immersion when acknowledging anything related to any race is immediately assumed to be racist, especially when it's in a work of fiction.

Hunendora

Hmm, I think I'd like to see the criminals viewpoint. They capture a Palladian and get stomped in the rescue. They try to assassinate Claire and Nestra to retaliate and save face, and get stomped. An unknown number of other attempts get stomped. Now their Leader is dead. What do they suspect or think they know about the Palladians?

Hussar L

> Nestra exists. To survive in a low mana world, she cannibalizes her own core > Aunt Claire raids until half death to restore Nestra's core, and gets captured > House Palladian rescues her, which includes Nestra, the baseline > Aunt Clecle and Nestra are attacked in retaliation, and they refuse to die > Supposedly, there were multiple more attacks on their person off screen, all foiled by Sereth > Sereth kills Allfather since he doesn't stop his attempts, possibly about to do it himself > This is Nestra's fault because she exists or because House Palladian should have not rescued Claire

Hussar L

I wouldn't say it's racist, more like culture shock

Leviathon251

Thanks for the chapter. Good stuff.

Leviathon251

Recognising the general ethnicity of an area or finding its uniformity different to where you live is not racist lol. She didn't engage in stereotyping, generalisations or negative speech towards or about there being mostly white people around. She just expressed that it was different from the multiculturalism of threshold. You can describe the race of a person without being racist. We aren't a bunch of carbon copy's. Difference is fine, it's when you begin attaching assumptions about a person based on their appearance that it become racism.

crownfall

house palladian sends its regards 😲

Paradox

I get where you are coming from, but personally I would not call this racism. A. It's her own race. B. It's a valid statement in a sense that she is used to a much more diverse population. Making the comment more about lack of diversity rather than any specific race.

Tomas Fuk

I must say that Nestras casual racism is really annoying. It really breaks the immersion for me, I just cant relate with racist MC, I wonder if we swap collors if the statnent will be acceptable: There were so many white/black people over here. It gave Nestra vertigo.

Jed Wolfgang

I’ve been waiting for this. TFTC

Anonymous Person

It seems Sereth traced at least one of the groups involved back to him. More specifically, he's the head of the group that ordered the follow-up attack on Nestra and her aunt on the train. Without an aggressive, prideful powerhouse heading them, that group is a lot less likely to keep persuing House Palladian over having their party crashed, and more likely to focus on internal politics while they sort out their new leadership structure.

Mantarok1205

Jolly good!

matt

Allfather was clearly the slaver leader that ordered her executed.

Benjamin Mages

I know Seth accused her of being careless but I'm honestly not sure how she could have personally prevented this from happening.

Benjamin Mages

I'm guessing Allfather was the dude in charge of the organization that tried to enslave Clair and tried to kill Nestra in payback. I don't really see any other reason for Seth to decide his death makes Seth's job of keeping Nestra alive and free of suspicion (to a reasonable degree) easier.

Bunny Waffles

We know he can brute force it, but his actual ability to mess with the fabric of reality is FAR more limited than what Nestra will be able to do in the future.

RonGAR

Ahhh that makes sense now. I didn't scope that on the first read. Thanks for clearing that up. So that means Allfather was also behind Claire's attempted kidnapping and slavery, right?

Cormac

A chonky chapter. Almost slice-of-lifey, but was nice.

Cormac

Wait, how was Nestra careless?

John Brand

Could also imply that Seth can open portals.

Kennyevilmonkey

Happy Nestra makes me happy. I'm looking forward to her surprising everyone with how fast she will grow. ❤️

Flynn Mandrake

Ooooh. Thanks for spelling that out, I didn't make that connection myself

StarWolf

Thanks for the chapter - was beginning to think none of my authors would post today!

RonGAR

So Sareth did kill All father... wow. Why thou? Nestra never even came across his path. Still wondering where the other Azshii 'watchers' on earth that Sereth keeps mentioning are, but we NEVER EVER see them! (Edited after reading the chapter in full.) --------- Ahhh How wise of that cop. Checked the plane for explosives, did he... LOLOLOL What a smart cop LOLOL a real thinker that one. LOL 😉 ---------------- Awwww Big hug from Mom... Oh you know she is happy! LOLOL She gets to keep her daughter for a long long time. And Ulysses is just sour the limelight is off of him. SMGDH He needs a woman and needs to start his own family. ---------------- Why does fast conversation still seem too fast for Nestra? I thought she was a gleam now. Yea yeah i know she is a D class but still. Im sure they do it too. Which brings me to my other point. There is no mention or use of increased hearing, or sight, or smell. And if there was, there wasn't enough for me to 'FEEL' the change that came over her. Not like the first time when she 'Changed' to her true self. This is just me really really trying to get into Nestra's big moment.🤭 -------- Raiding the poor nearly forgotten portals should yield some wealth since she would be first on the scene and first to raid. And she can't keep 'acting' like money isn't important, especially since her aunt nearly went broke trying to build and support that clinic, and was nearly killed multiple times in the attempt. She has got to pay that back or become a co-investor so her aunt doesn't have to take so many dangerous jobs. And yes, yes, I know that the clinic will flourish now that the theory has been proven. I'm sure BaiHua and Valerian's family will want to make a sizeable investment. They are all about 'healing' and treatment after all. --------- Wow, honestly didn't think gleams could be produced by baselines. Where did that come from? Don't even think I read anything like that. --------- Nice fight, was wondering if she ever got that practice her mother offered. Then all of a sudden, she is in a fight showing off her deeper understanding of Ice. I'm guessing there was some training in the few days before the solo D class test? Wish we got to see it. ---------- Ah Dr. Magzingwe. I wonder if he or anyone else in 'the know' Figured out it was Sereth who done in Allfather??? Still... I wonder why he didn't show up at the party? ------- Looking forward to what spells and tricks Nestra come up with for her human side. The more creative the better of course. Because if two ppl have a sword, the person who can use it the best wins. Same goes for magic. The more creative and unpredictable you can be with your magic, the better you'll be. Sorry to say, but her parents look like they like to 'overpower' than be creative. Same could be said for Helena and Nestra too. But I know our girl is smarter than that! 😁

Aifhwinx

also raises some interesting questions about the explanation for his death, did sereth make it look like a bunch of portal breaks, or are there more people in power aware that something strong enough to hunt and kill A-class first-gens is on earth. and just how ingrained is sereth in earth tech communications that he was able to figure out allfather was a threat and kill him in a day

Dietz

Seems like, yeah.

Aifhwinx

hmm Ulysses is wavering back and forth. I'm very curious how that relationship develops, Nestra isn't going to push it forward but it's looking much less fixed in place than it did at first. also curious if Sereth's prediction of her family turning on her will hold true or if he'll be proven wrong. atm there are 3 remaining candidates for 'turn on Nestra' in her family. mom, dad, and Ulysses. Ulysses almost feels too obvious, there's been so much foreshadowing and parallels between how Sereth describes their species' relationships with their host species, and how Ulysses describes what he expects Nestra's behaviour to end up like by accident or not. but he's also simultaneously made it clear his issue was not primarily with what she is (baseline) but what she did, that I almost feel like it might be a red herring honestly, I don't have enough of a read on most of the family to predict them much, and Nestra being secretly an alien who was zeused into existence is a pretty damn big rock to toss into the pond

PickledTink

---- “I did. I am given some liberties in how I look after you. Since bombs and walker attacks are, well, technology-related, I believe they are within my purview to stop. Allfather had a reputation of extreme pettiness that would make it difficult for me to manage, and after you revealed your nature to yet another person…” ---- Is this meant to imply that Sereth assassinated him because he was behind the criminal cartel that tried to murder Nestra? Because that is how it reads.

Unwillingmainer

I was wondering when something bad would happen. Nestra doesn't get anything good in like without a kick in the teeth to go along with it. With everything looking up, even her brother is being less of a dick, something had to give. In this case, she helped case the death of one of humanities limited powerful protectors. Doesn't matter he's a dickhead and war criminal, one more person to stop giant threats is gone. Because of her carelessness. Still, enjoying her go through stuff 10 years late. Can't wait to see how she does raiding as a human and what that will cause for trouble for her.

Jackjargon

Tasty offerings!!! Yummy cored of an asshole so we thinking allfather was big guy behind the slaver ring? Not really any other reason I can think he would be snack shaped now

Marius K

Wait, why did he kill Allfather? Was he the one behind the slave market ?

Julian

Yes the epub is buggy.

Talion

Epub is bugged for me.

People of the 13th century: Ah yes Magic is real Science: No it isn't Magic: no u That is the funniest summary of formal education. Sadly I won't be able to ever use it...
