Burns at Burns

Burns supper is a dinner celebration on Robert Burns Day (or Rabbie Burns Day, Robbie Burns Day, Burns Dayโฆ you get the idea), which honors the Scottish poet, Robbie Burns. Heโs most known for writing Auld Lang Syne, though he had many other notable works of writing. Turns out he was quite the drunk and womanizer, but as we do, we still be a-celebratinโ! ๐ Itโs actually on January 25, but we pushed it a few days so the whole family could attend.
This is one of my favorite holidays because I LOVE the almost pageantry of it all. I knew very little of Scottish culture prior to being with JD, and this celebration has given me a deep love for traditions of different cultures.
Linda always goes all out with decorating our table and making menus:
The men all wear kilts (if they have them) and all of us ladies wear tartan or plaid, or something that looks the part. There are several known recited poems, including the Address to the Haggis:

Selkirk Grace, songs are sung, and in our family, some wonderful pieces that JDโs dad, Jim, wrote. JDโs mom, Joanne, prepares an absolute feast for us all, following the traditional menu - haggis (including a vegetarian version), neeps (mashed turnips), tatties (mashed potatoes), baps (rolls), and peas. For dessert the last couple years itโs been a very rich cranachan:

Getting dressed up is always a ton of fun and I look forward to that a lot, as you might imagine.

Iโm part Scottish so itโs fine. Thatโs how this works, no? Iโm a mix of about 20 different ethnicities so I think I get to have fun with them all!
