Hard vs Soft/ Shadows

The principle is easy, the bigger the light source, the softer the shadows.
On the left picture I have used a bulb lamp and obtained soft edges on the shadows.
On the right one I have used a phone torch(flAsh light), and obtained sharp shadows as you can see under the shoulder pad and on the cast shadow from the axe.

In general is up to your liking, sunlight or headlights usually projects hard lights(batman's signal), cloudy day soft shadows.

So when to use one or the other depends on your objective ? being hard shadows more dramatic ?
