What should the next video be about? (Repost)
🕑 Added 2019-03-07 04:43:59 +0000 UTCGoddammit, in my previous post I wrote "What did Baudrillard think of The Emoji Movie?" instead of "The Matrix". Clearly I have The Emoji Movie on my mind too much since the previous video. Anyway, since I want to make sure that there's no confusion (and because Patreon doesn't allow Poll option editing), I made a new post. Make sure to vote again if you did on the last one!
Here are the options:
1) This probably isn't the title the final video will have, I have to come up with something catchy. Basically, it turns out that Buzzfeed's CEO Jonah Peretti, in his younger days, used to be somewhat of an anti-capitalist theorist. He wrote an essay called "Capitalism and Schizophrenia", utilizing the kind of continental philosophers this channel talks about - Lacan, Deleuze, Frederic Jameson, etc. It's actually a decent essay, and introduces some concepts well, but what's most amazing is that the advertising mechanisms that this essay describes critically, can be seen in Buzzfeed's current advertising model, showing that Peretti was able to utilize ideas he had used critically to succeed on the other side of the struggle.
2) I've already made a video on Baudrillard through American Psycho, but probably the most popular cultural product associated with Baudrillard is The Matrix, which was influenced by him, the actors had to read Baudrillard, his book Simulacra and Simulations was shown in the movie, and quotes of his were used in the script as well. However, Baudrillard quite harshly distanced himself from the movie. In this video I would introduce aspects of Baudrillard's thought relevant to The Matrix and show how their treatment in the movie differs.
3) I'd talk about the philosophy of the 1st season of the TV show True Detective, which is philosophical pessimism, explicitly talked about by one of the show's main characters Rust Cohle. I'd talk about Thomas Ligotti's philosophical influence on Rust's character, but also about the philosophical influences of Ligotti himself, such as Zapffe and Cioran. I'd explain some philosophical themes mentioned in the show, such as the depreciation and denial of life, pessimism as a worldview and antinatalism. You wouldn't need to have watched the show to understand the video, but I imagine this would be of interest mostly to fans of the show. If this gets picked I'll also read the book "True Detection" by Gary Shipley for some additional philosophical analysis.

I'd really like to see options 2 and 3 on this list made into real videos too, both are excellent topics. I've been looking for resources about Baudrillard's opinion on The Matrix, and though I've heard that he was not a fan, I haven't found any good sources where he himself is specifically disavowing the film. Would you happen to have any of those sources?

I would love to see you use the Black Mirror s1e2 "15 Million Merits" to explore anything. Something like Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle" perhaps? Anything you do will be great though, I love the channel and can't wait for the next video!
