Calico (Unused promo concept)
🕑 Added 2020-09-15 13:40:58 +0000 UTCRummaging through my old files, I dug up a thing from a few years back, when I took part in a contest. The task was to create a pitch for a kid superhero, together with some concept/promo illustration.
From what I can remember off the top of my head, mine ended up being about a kid who ran away from home and met a strange girl who saved his life and gave him a magic necklace that could seemingly transform him into any animal he wished (with his default being a calico cat, hence the title: Calico). I mean... glossing over quite a few important plot points here and there – the animals of choice actually had quite a hard limit, for example.
I've had a bit of a running gag for a while where I'd insert a calico cat (anthro or not) in the background of some of my illustrations. I've dropped that long ago, but more eagle-eyed readers may have seen that necklace on a few treasure piles here and there.
It was kinda fun to write with a YA novel flair, and I always kept the written part shelved quite close to things that were being made in case I felt like going somewhere with it. Maybe when the pirates are done, I'll give more humans a try. Perhaps then, the cat won't be the only thing in it that's worthwhile.

The cat was a very pleasant surprise when I found the piece again. It's still just as I remember imagining it. Plus, the studies of cat expressions I did back then helped me understand feline anatomy quite a lot. And it depends. How he finds out? Or why is it that there's a limit? The answer to the former is that in the very rough plot I had set up, he technically never did, it just explained itself with the rest of his powers being revealed for what they were.

Nah, I didn't even qualify for closer rounds, but I'm still happy with the little story nugget I can add to my files. It was fun to play around with the concept. The smoke is mostly just the application of the right brushes, adding, erasing, adding, erasing and a liberal use of the smudge tool. It helps me to visualize it as ribbons or kelp twirling about, and then just make it translucent, if that makes sense. Thank you for the kind words!
